In yet another pitiful defeat to the San Diego Chargers (37-10), the Bills are now officially out of the playoff picture. It's the team's sixth consecutive loss, and rather than stepping forward after two mediocre performances, had another all-around poor showing instead. Most notably, Ryan Fitzpatrick had his worst outing this year while the defense struggled to contain Rivers and the bolts' offense.Run Offense: D+
C.J. Spiller and company were not great, but at the same time, weren't as bad as the 96 total rushing yards makes it out to be. Spiller averaged 3.8 yards a carry for 46 yards. The Bills running backs only carried the ball 14 times to 37 pass attempts (as well as 6 QB runs and a sack).
Pass Offense: F
Stevie Johnson had a great day with 4 receptions for 116 yards. Unfortunately this cannot makeup for the abysmal play at quarterback by Fitz and Thigpen. Fitz struggled completing just 13 of 34 passes (38.2%) for just 176 yards. The two interceptions were very ugly as ball placement was off all day long. Thigpen meanwhile was 2-3 for 19 yards but also threw a pick. For those of you weren't clamoring for a QB pick in 2012, this position seems destined for new blood. A receiver to compliment Stevie seems to be another need after Brad Smith was held to 0 catches on the day
One sack again just given up, but the offensive line still is porous at times. Not bad by all means, but still could be better.
Run Defense: F
Despite the fact that Kelvin Sheppard had 11 tackles, Ryan Matthews ran over the Bills defense with 114 yards (5.7 a carry) on the ground. This unit still looks shaky from last year.
Pass Defense: F
Aaron Williams absence hurt. Scott and Wilson both gave up touchdowns to Antonio Gates while Philip Rivers finished the day with 3 TDs and a 123.3 rating. McKelvin and Florence should not be starting on a regular basis. On the plus side Justin Rogers deflected a pass.
Pass Rush: D
Actually saw some rush with Dareus getting a sack. Bryan Scott's credited sack came from Rivers bobbling the ball into the endzone, but still heads up play by Scott to recover the loose ball for the lone touchdown. Aside from that, nothing really assuaged the notion that the Bills will using a top 2 round pick on an OLB.
Special Teams: D-
Rayner was 1-2 field goals having missed a 53 yard attempt. Besides that though and more disappointing was the special teams inability to defend a fake punt after the defense narrowed the score to a touchdown. Coverage units still give up too much ground. Moorman struggled punting with 2 punts averaging 35.5 yards. Rogers was fair with kick return duties (called that one).
Gailey seemed to not have prepped the guys adequately enough for the trip to So. California. Edwards defense still has problems generating pressure, covering tight ends and receivers alike and stopping the run. Gailey made a major misstep in not running the ball especially given how much Fitz struggled. Spiller needs more carries if for no other reason than to develop his skills.
