Why the panic on Fitz, Chan, and the team as a whole?...Hold tight.

I just wanted to chime in on my opinion of the recent turn of the team. I live out on the West Coast and everyone asks me "what happened to your Bills?". A legitamite question given the nice start. After that NYG loss, I knew we were doomed from making the playoffs. I think we all knew we were, as we know you have to go 10-6 in the AFC to even have a shot. That game was huge. Looking at the schedule down the stretch I nearly wrote us off... But the real reason for the downfall is injuries. Some people hate blaming injuries, and refuse to as other teams face the same struggles. Thats true, but this team was already thin to start the season. Just look at our talent at WR. Sure we have our #1 in Stevie, and I think he is a stud, but after that we got a young Nelson, Parrish, and Donald Jones. Those three guys are all average at best. Nelsons got nice size and hands, and Parrish has great speed, but they are all players that need developing...which is fine. So we lose two of them, and plug in Roosevelt and we have a poor mans TE in Chandler in a "pass to set up the run" offense. Not good.

The rest of the injuries we all know. The offensive line has been a game of musical chairs. Obviously losing Freddy was the worst of them all, but the plague that struck the secondary was just as crippling. George Wilson would have gotten my MVP of the defense for the first 7 games...with Barnett, Dareus, and Byrd next in line. We lost McGee and Williams early. Kyle Williams and Troup the whole season. The list goes on. This team cannot afford injuries with the depth it has. We get down early in games, and teams are teeing off on our offensive line and Fitz is trying to do too much. He is a gunslinger so it can get ugly at times, but we shouldnt be throwing in the towel just yet.

I look forward to next year when we get back Williams and Troup on the line. When healthy the secondary can play solid and has some ball hawks in Wilson, Byrd, and McGee. The LB needs to develop fast, specifically Sheppard. On the offensive end we just need some stability on the offensive line and we should go after a WR in the draft. Blackmon?

Gonna be tough to pass up on RG 3 though if we get a shot...I will say that.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I think the jury is still out..

and it better be considering the contract he signed…Before I write him off as a good QB, I want to see a healthy WR corps and O Line. Stevie, Parris, Nelson, and perhaps a Justin Blackmon and he doesnt have any excuses in this offense, especially with FredEx back there with him.

As Chan said last week...........

When we get these guys back healthy next year at camp, it will be like having two drafts.
But I don’t believe Roscoe or McGee will be there.
The young guys are developing and they are both expensive, old (by NFL standards) and injury prone.

but Williams (still hate meatball as a nickname) is not a rookie and Dareus isn't hurt and is playing well for a rookie

I have to agree with sergeant

I also think everyone is underestimating the effect of the lockout. The first year Chan took over the injuries went way down. and I think that is mainly due to his strength and conditioning staff, it will be interesting to see next year how it works out, just the way it seems to me.

same as below – everyone was locked out and had the same opportunities as the Bills… it’s always excuse after excuse after excuse – the big picture is this – we’re no closer to the playoffs now than we were under Jauron and further from the postseason than we were under Mularkey… when does it change?

True

But their probably not going to play-offs either. Injuries do have a factor in any teams success. We are either cursed or players use IR as a excuse to get outa playing.:)

Roscoe Parrish is finished

I really think so. The guy is never healthy.

WR are shaky as is, but we’ve seen Fitz bring out the best in guys like Nelson and Chandler before. It might not take a first-round pick at WR to get first-round production.

In essence, I agree with the original post. Our offense is based on certain components working in symmetry. Throw a monkey into the wrench and the whole thing breaks down. Losing Fred Jackson is a hell of a monkey.

I like to believe this has more to do with the Bills players feeling like they can be something special. They started a year 0-8 and finished 4-4 while taking playoff and championship game bound teams to OT and 3 pt nail biters. All this with one year under a new coach and with a young roster. Im sure they can feel what they are capable of. -poz

Losing Fred Jackson is a hell of a monkey

We were halfway to the 6 game losing streak with Fred – I don’t see where he would have done a whole lot to help yesterday and Spiller was very good the game before

by JustAskTheAxis on Dec 12, 2011 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

You’ve got a point, but all the same Fred Jackson is a playmaker. He gives the offense another dimension that Spiller hasn’t yet, and probably never will. Now defenses don’t have to account for him, and they can focus on shutting down Fitz.

If this team was semi-healthy....

We woulda gone 8-8 and that woulda been a drastic improvement from last year. Even despite all the injuries we only lost to Cincy, NYJ, and NYG by a few points, as well as Tennessee. There have been some recent blowout losses, but I think last year was the true rebuilding season, and this year we needed to be healthy to see some true growth. We saw it early. The offensive line and secondary injuries have been catastrophic. Gailey wants to admit it every press conference but he swallows his tongue, cause he is never one to make excuses…Gailey has next year to make this an above .500 team otherwise he will be gone.

And as far as Fitz's #'s....

The guy might still put up 3800, 25 TD’s and 19ish INT’s on team that if your not a Bills Fan or a complete fantasy football dork you probably only know one WR on the team. And those same people likely didn’t know Fred Jackson before this year. Its all about expectations. Our quick start gave us high hopes, but its not that simple. Next year we will go 9-7 or 10-6 and make a push. Mark my words.

This is the second time I have read this from you, and I love it.

See, why is it that when people are overly optimistic during the offseason, no one can criticize them for that, but when people are critical, it gets “old fast”? I think Fitz has been downright bad lately. Can I be concerned? Gailey had a good game the last two, but during this losing streak, I would say he has been bad too? Is that allowed? Should Gailey be fired? I wouldn’t, but if they lose out, it deserves an honest discussion. Not being able to say negative things about a bad team without being criticized as overreacting gets old fast IMO.

Is Fitz a franchise QB? I don’t think so. I don’t think I’ve ever thought he’d be starting for this team 3 years from now. How many “franchise” QBs his age would you say that about?

Thank you thank you thank you thank you sireric for bringing the furious punching cat back into my life. - poz

Now, can somebody really tell me that this is Fitzy’s fault?

It’s not about assigning blame. It’s about winning a Super Bowl. Fitz isn’t going to do that. He’s just a solid, average QB. His stats support that and his inconsistency makes it tough to ignore as a Bills fan.

This also can’t be made into a Fitz vs. the defense thing because you can’t just go out with your first round pick and draft a defense. You can make QB a priority and still fix your defense.

Let me revise what he just said.

“Rec’d. Spot on. You just can’t loe that many key players from a team and keep winning unless you have a top 3 QB.”

Da'Jon McKnight - WR (Minnesota) - 6'3'' 211Lbs. (5th Round)

Courtney Upshaw - Alabama - the answer at OLB
Vinny Curry - Marshall - the other answer at OLB.

Both can be gotten, whether Vinny Curry falls to the 2nd or we trade up in the last 1/3 of the 1st Round. Snagging one or both will help our defense immensely.

You've got to be kidding.
After that NYG loss, I knew we were doomed from making the playoffs.

This is crap, sorry. It was a close loss to an NFC team, leaving us at 4-2. If you gave up on the playoffs at that point, you may as well have given up before the season.

Colin Brown...Pancreas Yellow...

by ChipShot on Dec 12, 2011 9:38 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

No thats true...

That was a devestating loss and we had that game won. We coulda at least settled for a FG but Chan drew up a go route to Stevie and Webster picked it. I assume with the Bills we need to go 11-5 or 10-6 to make the playoffs and with @ NE, @ NYJ, @ SD remaining on the schedule I was worried. Maybe “doomed” is the wrong word, but I told my buddy who watches Bills games with me at the Bills Bar in Portland, OR every Sunday…“There goes the playoffs”. Much like that Dallas MNF game a few years ago, I saw a bad loss like that being the turning point in the season…But the injuries is what really put the fork in us.

by robbybird22 on Dec 13, 2011 1:03 AM EST reply actions

And lets be serious....

The Bills haven’t really been the “clutchest” of teams over the last few decades. I was hoping for a 7-1 first half and then assumed we could split the last 8 for 11-5. Thats why I thought we were done, knowing we had a few games with the Jets ahead of us, who absolutely own us right now.

Nice to hear a bit of reason

The D suck – but should get better with age.

The O is talentless to a large extent.

If we can get a talented No 1 WR, a slightly better Oline and a medium D then we can judge Fitzy. I think OLB is the most important because 1 (or two) pass rushers will make all our CB’s, coverage LB’s and safeties better players … 1 better player = 7 or 8 better players.

from today's TMQ article on ESPN.com

Bolts Sigh With Relief — It’s Finally December: Philip Rivers, who leads the NFL in turnovers with 22, nevertheless is 24-2 on his career from Dec. 1 on. The Bills, hot early in the season, now have not won in the United States since early October. In the Bills-at-Bolts contest, Harvard’s Ryan Fitzpatrick had a quarterback rating of 31. If every pass a quarterback attempts falls incomplete, his NFL rating is 39.6. When Buffalo was hot early, Bills management rewarded Fitzpatrick with a lucrative contract extension. Before the new contract, Fitzpatrick had 12 touchdown passes versus six turnovers, and the team was 4-2. Since the new contract, he had eight touchdown passes versus 12 turnovers, and the team is 1-6. How long till the Bills are looking to unload Fitzpatrick? Perhaps February.

Yeah

I’ve been looking for OBD to get a QB for several yrs now, picking high in first rd. I believe everyone mostly gets that Fitz isn’t the answer. The only people not listening are the ones that make that decision. Is it fear? No, because they took Spiller last yr. That took courage? Some would say baffling pick considering needs. Were BPA baby! This re-build may take some time, bring some snacks and beverages:)

The Fitz contract and the rookie wage scale will not prevent this team from drafting a franchise QB if one is there when they draft. The Fitz contract wasn’t really that risky in the grand scheme of things. As this team gets better, he can guide this team to respectability until the “new guy” (if there ever is one) is ready to go.

Oh

I get that. I think this franchise has no desire to sign a rookie or established QB because our FO wouldn’t know a good time let a lone a good QB to pick in any draft. We picked top 11 two yrs running and didn’t even take a shot at a QB till like next week in draft:) Whats it gonna take to take a chance Buffalo? #1 overall? Colts beat ya again!

As long as Nix is GM
Whats it gonna take to take a chance Buffalo? #1 overall?

I don’t think he could find a QB who was an undisputed #1 pick like Luck.

He’s gotta keep this job as long as possible, so he can keep building up that 401K. If he takes a QB who is a bust, his cushy job is gone. So he will stick with Fitz and Jauron like records because it will make Ralph a profit that keeps his job. 4 Sell outs a year + Toronto = 1 more year at his job until the fans call for his head Donahoe style. Judginging from thi blog, that’s at least 2 years away. Why would Nix roll the dice on a QB that might get him fired if he can’t produce an extra win or two a year by drafting defense? If he had drafted a QB this year, with the funk Fitz is in, people would be calling for the draft pick and if he didn’t produce, he might get fired. So the status quo goes for the 12th year now of no playoffs.
