As it turns out, this season is expiring with that utter familiar feeling of frustration. We have succumb to a heap of injuries, exposing our lack of depth. But more importantly, our Defense has been embarrassingly awful for an NFL team over the last 2 years. Our offense can’t keep up with the points our defense allows, especially with key guys at key positions being injured. It’s time for something to change. Dave Wannstedt was brought in over the offseason to help sure up this offense. That certainly hasn’t happened.
They say that scheme is right, but they just aren’t executing it correctly. Well, whose fault is that really. Have the coaches not trained these players properly, or is our defense filled with incompetent players. Which came first, the chicken or the egg. Something’s gotta give. And I doubt Nix wants to depart with all these players he brought in.
So who then, could be brought in to make an impact? Maybe the stache can come in and light a fire. But I get the feeling he is ok in the position he is in now.
How about a new face. Someone with experience and proven he can run a quality defense. The biggest name that jumps out to me would be Steve Spagnuolo. While he is currently the Head Coach of the Rams, his tenure there isn’t looking promising. While Defensive Coordinator in New York, Spagnuolo led a top defensive group against the undefeated #1 offense in the league to overtake the Patriots in Superbowl XLII. His NYG Defense was feared. His Rams defense is also consistently grouped with some of better defenses in the league.
This formula can work well, as Bills fans should be familiar with. Gregg Williams turned the Saints defense around after being let go with the Bills.
This is my ideal candidate, and the Bills should open up their check books to lure him here.
There are other candidates out there as well. Some good assistants and coaches at both the collegiate and pro level. But if I was trying to turn my team around, I know who I would have on speed dial.
