Apparently Buddy and Chan are that dumb - sigh....
As the 2011 season winds down for the Bills the media is already begin to focus more attention on the 2012 NFL draft. Head coach Chan Gailey had a pretty pointed response when asked if the team would consider drafting a quarterback in the first round.
"You can talk to (Bills GM) Buddy (Nix) about that kind of stuff," said Gailey. "But I don’t believe that’s anywhere in the thought process."
Now it’s unclear whether Gailey meant it’s not part of the thought process because there are three games still left in the regular season or it’s not part of the thought process in terms of an early draft need. I would tend to believe it’s the former. Either way based on Gailey’s comment on Monday that he has no questions about Ryan Fitzpatrick as his quarterback, that is probably a more telling answer.

FTR – if QB is off the board early in the 2012 draft then i’m going to patiently, as always, wait for the next GM/Coach combo because that baby is never going to come.

If they don’t even consider QB a priority next draft, i’m going to take the opportunity to consider how much time I spend doting over their product.

This franchise hasn't deemed one a priority in a looooong time
Same with pass rushers and the offensive line. There’s a reason this franchise stinks every season…

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
I’d disagree that it hasn’t been a priority. They haven’t done a very good job of addressing it, especially pass rusher and QB, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a priority.
They just recently spent 1st and 2nd round picks on the OL. While the rest of the line brought in by this administration largely seems like castoffs, it’s the most consistent line play we’ve seen in years. It seems like no Polian-inspired front office ever invests much in the OL (in terms of high draft picks) anyway.
QB has been botched for a very long time, but not for lack of effort. They went and traded a 1st and a 4th for Rob Johnson. They traded a first for Bledsoe. They traded back up into the first for Losman. Edwards and Fitzpatrick were both supposed to be backups when they had a “legitimate” starter ahead of them in the depth chart. It’s not that it hasn’t been a priority, it’s just that they suck at evaluating and developing QB talent.
Pass rusher is the one spot I would agree hasn’t been a high enough priority. They spent second rounders on Schobel, Denney, and Kelsay, as well as a first on Maybin, which over the course of a decade is not nearly enough. Other than those high picks, it’s been a horror show of mid- and late-round picks that have been asked to do much with limited abilities.

Ryan Tannehill will be available.
And yes, this is the start of my annual “QB who Buffalo should draft” drives. I’m 0-2 on Tebow and Gabbert/Locker.

I wanted Locker so badly last year. I didn’t think he’d go nearly as early as he did, but I was fantasizing about some scenario in which the Bills traded back into the first around pick 18 or 20 and grabbed him.

Season post-mortem isnt here yet — you are reading too much into a coach who is worried about his QB’s confidence. Nix has said repeatedly if he thinks there is a franchise QB of the future available you have to take him. He’s also huge on BPA. So I think that means if one of the top few QBs is an option, they are gonna consider it. We got enough problems without worrying that they might pass on someone before they actually do it. Until then, not gonna sweat it.

dont understand the title. of course gailey is going to back fitz publicly. he has to. thats his QB and its the guy hes clearly liked since week3 last season. and of course hell defer personnel questions to buddy right now. chan has 3 games ahead of him, as a coach he cant (and shouldnt) be the least bit worried about the draft/offseason.
you think chan and buddy are idiots- thats fine, alot of bills fans seem to think so as well. but what in gods name would this quote have to do with that? chan answered it exactly the way it shouldve been answered.
Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

how could QB NOT be in the thought process? Shouldn’t every single position including the games most important position be included in that thought process?

dude, chill. of course quarterback is part of their though process- its not like buddy and the scouts just arent gonna bother watching film on QBs because the bills have fitz.
but gailey, on the other hand, is here answering questions with 3 games left in the season. he needs to both back his quarterback and try to get his team amped up for this weeks game. chan cant exactly say “ya well.. fitz has sucked recently, so were definitely thinking of taking a quarterback five months from now.” he needs to give a flat “no” to a question like this and move on to one more relevant to this sunday if he can. again, his answer was totally appropriate.

Coaches don't think draft in-season
They are WAY too busy to do that. The coaches are working with the positions, Edwards and Gailey are installing the offensive and defensive gameplan. Even if Gailey wasn’t the de facto OC, he’d still be working situational football, metrics and tendencies with the defensive and offensive quality control coaches, etc.
The coaches already sleep at work. If they had to start thinking about the draft and free agency, they wouldn’t sleep.
Starting the official Buffalo "Draft a Pass Rusher in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
I know that – but to me he was referencing Buddy and them not even thinking about it. Which would be, obviously, a huge mistake.
Regardless of some of the comments here i’ve been a pretty staunch Nix and Gailey supporter – but i’m starting to wane – and although this may have been in jest – the fact that Gailey said QB wasn’t in the thought process makes me very nervous. Every position should always be open to consideration in the draft – i’m just failing to understand why he didn’t say something along those lines because to me it makes me think that Fitz is the guy no matter what and that also makes me think that it’s going to be 5 more years (whatever this regime has left + whatever it takes for next regime) before we something good out of OBD.

I wouldn't read too much into coach-speak
If Gailey says “Sure, we’re taking a look at that position (referencing QB),” you get two bad outcomes:
Near-term, the team without much confidence gets lower. Fitzpatrick is streaky in my opinion, because he has some confidence issues. He’s never really been “the guy” and played like “the guy” for long stretches. I can empathize. I was a hockey goaltender with a lot of confidence, but sometimes I over-thought the situation on ice, and lost some of my confidence at times. It affected my play at times.
Long-term, there’s a bunch of teams looking at QB’s in the draft: Washington, Miami, Cleveland, Seattle, and Kansas City. Luck is going to Indy, and if everyone that could leave early does, that list included Barkley, RGIII, Landry Jones, and Tannehill. Four QB’s for six teams, if you include Buffalo. Buffalo might finish behind all five of those teams. Why start talking QB when you’re not in an ideal spot to select a QB?
What Gailey really, really thinks about the QB position and Fitzpatrick won’t be truly known until he write a book in ten years. I can say this: if Gailey hires Norv Turner as the OC, a strong-armed QB will follow at some point.

What Gailey really, really thinks about the QB position and Fitzpatrick won’t be truly known until he write a book in ten years.
Or until you see who is taken or passed on in the draft. Endorsing Fitz is fine right now — Garrard was the quarterback in Jacksonville until he wasn’t on the team anymore, but don’t think for an instant Nix and Gailey aren’t watching beginning of the season tape and tape from the Dallas Miami and San Diego games over and over post-season and trying to figure out who it is they think Fitz is and whether one of the guys who could be available can help. Like you said, coach-speak, quotes like this don’t tell you anything.

I have no problem with this. Just focus on this upcoming game Chan, Worry about the draft later.

I wouldn’t get too worked up about this, considering the draft is about five months out. This is akin to figuring out what you’re going to wear the day your child is born the moment your wife tells you she’s pregnant.

WOW!!!
So who do you want Jones because he is all thats there were we pick and he is not worth the risk…
Take Jeffery Floyd or Blackmon 1st round
Curry or Lindsey 2nd round
Later rounds grab a QB like Wilson high reward type of QB
The title of this FanShot is ridiculous.
You’re saying that a QB definitely, positively regardless of situation or circumstance should be taken in the 1st round of the next NFL draft and that this decision should be made right now with 3 games left in the season and five months before the draft when Chan Gailey has most likely watched very little or any tape on any of the QBs who will be available to be drafted next year. I’m also going to assume by your “baby is never going to come” comment that your proposed action will most likely result in “the baby” (I’m assuming that is playoffs/championship) and that not pursuing this action will definitively result in “no baby”.
If anyone in the entire universe disagrees with these points, they are…DUMB. C’mon, man. Just say what you really want to say. Maybe you don’t like Chan/Nix, maybe you don’t like Fitz, and/or you’re angry that another year has gone by with high hopes and depressing results.
That’s all fine and dandy and we can have a discussion about that, but don’t set up straw men for the sole reason of calling people who disagree with you DUMB.

It won't be a QB, bank on it.
I disagree with the majority of Rumblers regarding the QB situation. I personally don’t think there is even the slightest possibility that the Bills take a QB with their first pick. There is no possible way that RW would dole out that huge contract to Fitz, with the thought that he was going to shell out $30 million for another QB only 6 months later. And don’t start with the “it’s not that bad of a deal, easy to get out of after a couple years” talk relating to Fitzy’s deal. Doesn’t matter one iota. Even if Nix and Chan really wanted that (and we don’t know what they want, we can only speculate), it won’t happen. Honestly, I’m perplexed that so many people think it’s possible, or even probable.
The only scenario that would see the Bills take a QB with their first pick is if they had a shot at Luck. They don’t, so they won’t.
I’ve watched the way this franchise operates for over 30 years. If they take a QB in the first round in 2012, I’ll eat my hat.

Hmm
Don’t forget far cheaper to get first rd players signed for far less now. Add in fact OBD can opt out of large portion of contract (Fitz’s) and it is possible. But dang it your probably right FO will screw the pooch some how, some way. Your right. Your hat’s probably very safe.
If you didn't like my last post wait till you read the next! :) Until we draft/acquire franchise QB we'll be setting records for losing soon!

Come on Buffalo, please?
