Buffalo Bills Up To 15 Players On Injured Reserve

Photo

On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills placed rookie tight end Lee Smith on Injured Reserve, promoting Kevin Brock from the practice squad to fill his roster spot. Smith became Bills player No. 15 to land on IR this season - not a record by any means, but certainly a meaningful number.

Of those 15 players, a round dozen were expected to have a big impact on the team's success this season. Let's take a look at those dozen players - a list that includes the two best performers on the team.

Fred Jackson. Had the best season of his career, even if it only lasted parts of 10 games. Jackson was so good early this year that he had a legitimate case for league MVP consideration. A broken fibula ended his season, and as good as C.J. Spiller has been at times in his stead, Jackson is Buffalo's best player.

Star-divide

Marcus Easley. A heart condition derailed a promising pre-season and a lot of buzz about a player that many expected to emerge as the team's No. 2 receiver this season. Easley still has not played in an NFL regular season game.

Roscoe Parrish. The speedy slot receiver was expecting big things after a solid debut season with Chan Gailey, but caught just one pass for 16 yards before succumbing to a season-ending ankle injury.

Donald Jones. Though he struggled to fill in for Lee Evans as the team's No. 2 receiver, Jones has still been missed since exiting the lineup with an ankle injury. He may not have proven himself worthy of being a starter this season, but he's certainly a guy worth having around, and a good football player.

Lee Smith. Though he carried no pre-season expectations after being a late waiver claim, Smith emerged as a solid sub-package, blocking tight end behind Scott Chandler this season. His upside is limited, but he's a good football player, too.

Eric Wood. For the second time in three pro seasons, a nasty leg injury ended Wood's season prematurely - this time a shredded knee. Wood had been performing well in his new role as the full-time center, and the line has missed his leadership qualities since exiting the lineup.

Kyle Williams. Slowed all season by an Achilles injury, Williams landed on IR and has since had surgery to remove a bone spur that had been irritating the tendon. In losing Williams, the Bills lost their best defender, and far too much of the onus has fallen on Marcell Dareus' shoulders as a result.

Torell Troup. The Bills pumped up Troup's strength gains and progress as a player all summer, but a bad back prevented him from ever realizing that potential this season. Back injuries can be tricky, and Troup has had surgery to try to alleviate the problem in the hopes that he'll be fully healthy come 2012.

Shawne Merriman. Buddy Nix's self-appointed savior for the pass rush, Merriman looked like a shell of his former self before a pre-existing Achilles issue flared up on him and cut his season short. Even though he was only mediocre, he's been lightyears better than any other player at his position this season, and is clearly still the team's best and most respected pass rusher.

Chris White. Drafted to help re-build the core of the team's special teams units, White proved himself a highly valuable performer covering kicks early in the season. His presence has been missed in that capacity ever since he landed on iR.

Terrence McGee. The injury-prone veteran cornerback was injured on the first defensive play of the season, came back six weeks later, played five solid games, and then tore up his knee. He's played in 15 games in the past two seasons, and hasn't completed a full 16-game schedule since 2004.

Rian Lindell. Injured while trying to make a tackle on a kickoff return, Lindell's shoulder problem proved insurmountable. His replacement, Dave Rayner, has showed off a huge leg, but has also been highly unreliable kicking field goals. Lindell was 13-of-15 this season.

I wonder what the average # per NFL team is?

I live in St. Louis and I think they just landed their 14th player too.

by dabillsr1 on Dec 21, 2011 9:48 AM EST reply actions

Apparently we ranked #1 a few weeks ago, but I’m pretty sure this weights the injuries based on the quality of the player.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.

If I read this right, the total number of IRs is in parentheses following team name. If so, the league average is 8.59 per team. Jax Jags have the high with 23, Falcons the low with 2.

So, we’re “above average” but not the worst # wise. As you say, the rankings on the link factors in “impact” of those on IR. As such, we are #1! The wrong thing to be #1 in (or above avrage for that matter). Sigh.

Merriman, Parrish, McGee, Lindell

Do you bring them back and can they be prominent players again? I wouldn’t mind seeing any of them, but hope that we have STRONG BACKUP options if and when they don’t work out.

by dabillsr1 on Dec 21, 2011 9:50 AM EST reply actions

I think Parrish and Lindell would be quality starters to bring back.

Parrish looked really, really good last season and I think a starting receiving corp of Johnson, Easley, Parrish, and Nelson would be more than adequate in production.

Lindell is Mr. Reliable, and though he doesn’t have the huge leg of Rayner, he also doesn’t miss 20 yard field goals or launch squibs into opposing players on the front line on kickoffs.

Merriman? Eh, why not? This team has a dearth of pass rushing talent and he’s still under contract for one more year.

McGee, as much as I love the guy, is injury-prone and just not as good in coverage as he used to be. CB is a position of need for this team, especially if the pass rush equation isn’t solved. McGee no longer fits that need.

Agreed on all four.

Though I’d add McGee to the list.

With their injury histories, I feel like we could get Parrish and McGee back for a bargain; but if we re-sign them, that doesn’t necessarily mean we don’t go out and get a WR in the 1st or another early CB. We should re-sign them, but not plan on them being heavy contributors (as starters).

I don’t understand why people want to get rid of Merriman. He’s not getting paid an exorbitant amount, and his potential gains is still much higher than any UDFA/late rounder. Along with that, we’re not exactly so strapped for roster spots that he’s preventing some young guy with loads of potential from making the roster. Basically, there’s no reason not to keep him and hope he gets better (though like WR/CB, he shouldn’t be looked upon as being a heavy contributor as a starter).

Da'Jon McKnight - WR (Minnesota) - 6'3'' 211Lbs. (5th Round)

Courtney Upshaw - Alabama - the answer at OLB
Vinny Curry - Marshall - the other answer at OLB.

Both can be gotten, whether Vinny Curry falls to the 2nd or we trade up in the last 1/3 of the 1st Round. Snagging one or both will help our defense immensely.

Agreed but not McGee

He just can’t stay on the field and the Bills will need that roster spot.

In last week’s issue listed the Bills as the most affected team due to injuries, Wood best offensive lineman, Williams best defensive lineman and of course Freddy…

It just seems the last 5+ years the Bills continue to get decimated by injuries each year. Hard to figure why this continues to happen, is it the curse of Rusty Jones???

when you re-build

First you focus on the starters. In only a year and a half Nix and Co. built I good offense and OK defense, as evidenced by the 5-2 start. Then they lost 3 pro-bowlers (2 former, one about to be) and a handful of other high quality starters.

After building the starting core you focus on back ups, reserve and role players, something Nix and Co clearly haven’t gotten to and rightly so, as evidenced by the 7 game skid.

The starters can play. Another year of building the reserves will go a long long way. (Plus a true pass rusher!)

totally agree

The Bills just don’t have any depth. Some teams can lose starters and still field a decent enough team because they’ve developed enough talent (Pats, Packers etc) We’re just not there yet. Give Nix and Co some time.

Although Merriman's pass rushing skills diminished...

He was solid holding the edge in run defense. What’s disappointing is that Wannstedt has been unable to develop anyone to replace him in that role.

by Rick A on Dec 21, 2011 10:34 AM EST reply actions

Wannstedt coaches the inside linebackers. Bob Sanders coaches the outside linebackers.

Merriman also drew a lot of protection to his side which freed up other players and while he wasn’t putting up sack numbers he was applying pressure to opposing QBs which tends to lead to turnovers. Sometimes, just the illusion of a pass rush can be effective in disrupting a QB. Since Merriman left the lineup and teams figured out no one else can get to the QB on a regular basis, INTs have severely dropped and the defense has struggled to get off the field and prevent points.

Merriman might not have put up the sack numbers this year, but he was the only guy putting pressure on the QB when he was turned loose. It also seemed like the other team got away with what should have been an obvious holding penalty whenever he got close, like at the end of the Raiders game. He got hauled down on that Hail Mary pass, and it would have been a huge injustice if the Bills had lost that game because the refs overlooked what should have been a game-ending penalty.

by SiriusRed on Dec 21, 2011 12:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

A significant difference...

between the Bills and other teams is that successful teams don’t consistently cut veterans in an effort to shed payroll. All teams have injuries. They don’t all get rid of players like Lee Evans and Geoff Hangartner to save $5 million and then wonder why it’s a problem later.

@sawyervanhorn

by Sawyer in Boston on Dec 21, 2011 10:45 AM EST reply actions

Cutting Geoff Hangartner is a problem now? Urbik has looked quite good at center.

Editor-in-Chief, BUFFALO RUMBLINGS®

by Brian Galliford on Dec 21, 2011 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

A one-game problem that has since been fixed can’t be lumped into a list like that, in my opinion. The Evans trade, one can argue, has had a season-long negative affect on the offense and the receiving corps. I don’t think that argument can be made with Hangartner.

Editor-in-Chief, BUFFALO RUMBLINGS®

by Brian Galliford on Dec 21, 2011 11:15 AM EST up reply actions

That’s fair, and I agree that Urbik has filled in admirably, but I still think it points to a larger trend. And if Wood’s injury is going to be considered a reason why the Bills struggled this year, one has to then consider what all the alternatives might have been.

You can even point to Maybin as another example. I don’t think it’s unreasonable wonder how much of a role cost played in that decision as well. As J2 points out below, Spencer Johnson at OLB has been a disaster, and Maybin, however imperfect, was another measure of depth they were not willing to pay for.

@sawyervanhorn

by Sawyer in Boston on Dec 21, 2011 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe wasn’t exactly quality depth for us. Sure, he’s performed well for the Jets but he was terrible for the Bills. My guess is they got ride of him not because of the money, but more so because he was taking up a roster spot.

by WestCoastBills on Dec 21, 2011 11:59 AM EST up reply actions

Maybin had no role with the Bills. He was drafted to play 4-3 DE, a position for which he was badly undersized. (That failure belongs to Brandon, Jauron, and Modrak.) Even at OLB in a 3-4, he was too small to be an every-down player. With the Jets, he is simply a role player, nothing more than a designated pass rusher on obvious passing situations. For what the Bills were paying him, it made no sense to keep him around just to be a pass rusher and nothing else.

by SiriusRed on Dec 21, 2011 12:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I’d take 6 sacks over Spencer Johnson any day.

@sawyervanhorn

by Sawyer in Boston on Dec 21, 2011 12:56 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

You're assuming Maybin would have gotten six sacks had he stayed in Buffalo.

That is a huge assumption to make. I am almost 100% sure that it would not have happened because this defense can’t consistently force 3rd and 5 or longer like the Jets can in order for Maybin to even sniff the field. Maybin doesn’t play in short yardage situations for the Jets because he is just as much a liability against the run for them as he ever was in Buffalo.

Aldon Smith

Has been a pretty good situational pass rusher too. A guy like that would probably get run out of town by Bills fans…..

by fanick82 on Dec 21, 2011 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Aldon Smith is also a rookie, and he is only a situational pass rusher for now. Maybin was in his 3rd year, and was so bad on the Bills that he didnt even fit in their situational pass rusher rotation.

Sure, Maybin has found some success with the Jets, but look at his sacks. He gets coverage sacks. He runs around the tackle, loops back inside, and crashes down on a QB that holds the ball too long. Problem is, in Buffalo, the QB never held the ball too long because someone was always open.

-Chan Gailey-

by Eric Murawski on Dec 21, 2011 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

it’s always been a problem for some reason.

The real problem that I don’t think gets enough attention (here’s an article idea) is Chan’s questionable (at best) personnel decisions.

Levitre at C instead of Urbik – that was a no brainier
Moats moving everywhere
Spencer Johnson at OLB or playing RDE
Spiller not getting carries since Fred’s been down (saving him for the last 3 games of the season??)
Not using Chandler enough on drives

He’s also made some decent moves, maybe out of necessity – benching Leodis chiefly among them but I’ve found some of his personnel decisions to be very curious

by J2 on Dec 21, 2011 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

The Levitre at C gaffe is by far the worst on that list.

He played to poor guy out of position for 3 full quarters with disastrous results for the team. The poor coaching decision was made entirely too apparent when Urbik came in at C and looked very, very comfortable. I’m not one to blast Gailey too often as I don’t always have all the information he does, but knowing who your best backup is at the most important O-line position totally seems like something you should know as an offensive coordinator/head coach.

I’m willing to give Gailey a slight pass on the Moats/Spencer issue as he is most likely deferring to a defensive-minded coach who should know better. There comes a point as a head coach, however, when you have to step in if you see things not working and make a change yourself or find someone who can make the necessary changes for you. Gailey has failed in that regard so far as well.

by APhoenixDestiny on Dec 21, 2011 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, Levitre at center was terrible. But Moats and Spencer etc. is more an indictment of the state of our OLB position than a coaching error. Or at the least it begs the question where the heck did Danny Batten go. If we think he can provide anything at that position, nows the time to give him reps. Spencer Johnson at OLB is okay in a pinch when we are trying to do our best to make the playoffs, but might as well play Batten to close it out now.

Spiller he spoken at length about in a recent interview:
“He really didn’t play the whole first half, first two-thirds of the season. I don’t want to put 25-30 carries on him right now. At some point he may get 25-30 carries but if he’s going to be involved in the passing game he’s going to touch it 15-20 times and that’s what he needs to do. We need to try to make sure he touches it some way shape or form 20 times a game. That’s what you hope to have from a guy like that. Again, he’s not a 215, 220 pound back like Fred (Jackson). You can’t expect him to be one. If all his runs are edge runs he might carry it 25 times. If he’s going to run it up inside like we want him to do, he’s going to take some pretty good licks and I’m not sure I want that at this point in his career, maybe in the future but not now.”

Pretty sure he’s saving him for some other season when we all give a damn.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.

So how do you interpret it?

by greysquirrel on Dec 21, 2011 12:39 PM EST up reply actions

I interpret it as he thinks he’s going to get hurt or that he shouldn’t be bogged down with the workload because he isn’t mentally ready at this point – he’s a RB – play him. Chan has made numerous questionable personnel decisions this year.

If Chan is saying what you’re thinking then to me he’s laying down for the season and not attempting to do whatever it takes to win games. That’s something right there if it’s true – then maybe some conspiracy theorists can come out and start thinking of some insane ideas but if the HC is saying that he’s not going to play his most talented offensive player because he wants him for next season or the season after then, to me, he’s not doing his job. Which is to win football games.

by J2 on Dec 21, 2011 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Isn’t saving him from injury saving him for a season Chan thinks itss worth the risk of playing him more.

Hes getting like 4 touches less per game than Fred did and he weighs 20 pounds less and he is playing a lot in games we are trailing badly. Seems to me this isn’t like we are benching the kid, just want to use him slightly less.

Jamal Charles rarely got the bal 20 times last year. Chan’s not aone in this philosophy.

what good is that if Chan isn’t around. His job is to win football games – something he’s not doing very well in.

Hes getting like 4 touches less per game than Fred did

That’s kind of irrelevant though – when Fred was playing our team wasn’t a skeleton crew. Spiller is clearly our best offensive player at this point but he chooses not to use him? why? is he deliberately trying to lose games? If that’s the philosophy then fine but Chan needs to show this team is improving and that’s hardly the case.

Chan’s personnel decisions are dumbfounding at times – Spiller was running great inside and outside against the Dolphins – he was getting great yards and I can’t even remember a negative play he had yet you give him for rushes in the 2nd half? That’s stupid.

by J2 on Dec 21, 2011 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve discussed this in depth, but the rushes, especially in the third before we really had to go hurry up, were attempted. We didn’t end up with rush attempts because we needed to score midway through the fourth (and frankly, that worked, so why should we second guess that?) Where we couldnt get rushes is in the third and that had to do with multiple penalties forcing us to punt and multiple interceptions. Its just not as easy as you make it sound.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.

Lee Evans

When Lee was here last year it’s not as if he had much of an impact in our offense. And I know he’s been hurt this year but when he has been in the game, it’s not as if he’s had much of an impact on Baltimore’s offense. Trading Lee was the prudent thing to do. Never mind the fact that Lee may have in fact asked to be traded.

by WestCoastBills on Dec 21, 2011 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Evans is fast, but that’s about it. He is not the best route-runner, and he can never beat a double-team. Sure, it’s easy to say now that we wish we had him back after losing so many receivers to injuries, but you don’t plan at the start of the season to lose that many players at one position. When you have depth at a position, you have to trade away something of value to get a draft pick so you can rebuild other positions where you need depth — or even better starters. What GM would have given us a 4th round pick for any other receiver we might have offered?

by SiriusRed on Dec 21, 2011 12:32 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You don’t pay Lee Evans whatever we owed him so he can look like he looked this year or last year. He hasn’t looked any better than what we trot out there. We just have a warm and fuzzy feeling for him. If we are gonna use hindsight to say we could have used more depth we can also use hindsight to say this trade has been a steal for a guy with 4 caches, 74 yards, no TDs and is owed $4-5m each of these last two years on his contract. I get debating it at the time, maybe Lee could look better this year, but now its not even close. I wouldnt think he’d be helping us that much. The value would have been terrible.

I have low expectations. But high hopes.

I can't.

I consider a bust someone who just sucks. Can’t get on the field because he’s no good, not cause he gets hurt. It will be disappointing if this becomes even more of a recurring thing with Wood, But in no way does he suck.

But to be fair,

his first injury was nothing more than the bad luck of having a 300lb. D-lineman fall on the back of your leg. No one has that happen and walks to the sideline.

his ankle problems last year I believe were simply the last remnants of his rookie injury.

this year, I’d say it was bad luck again, but even worse since it involved the knee and not simply a bone (on a slightly related note that’s why I am not and it seems no one else is worried about Jackson’s injury).

I think that makes his story tragic.

All that promise and talent and no way to stay on the field. I won’t think he’s a bust, though.

never

Injury-prone or just plain unlucky, perhaps… but he is not a bust. He is a solid player, and we need more offensive linemen like him.

Fitzpatrick

For all of the greif this guy has received the past few weeks we needed this to put things in perspective:

1- He has lost 3 WR’s, a Starting RB, and his Starting Center
2- The Defense has been ravaged to the point that they can’t keep from being down double digits by the end of the first quarter in many games

With this Fitzpatrick (not Peyton Manning or Drew Brees) is asked to come from behind with back-ups at WR, a rotation of starting C’s, and little threat of a run game since Fred went down- He is forcing passes out of necessity, I would take that over what we saw from Trent Edwards constatly checking down… The $60mil contract is on par with a solid QB but a solid QB should not be asked to do all that Fitz is.

I’m willing to give Fitz the benefit of the doubt for all of the reasons you mentioned but i have to admit, I’m starting to warm to the idea of perhaps drafting either Barkley or Griffin if they are available.

Lots of injuries this year

I would guess that it had to do with the shortened off-season but does anyone have/know of any stats that would back that up? Looking at the profootball weekly article Greysquirrel kindly posted would suggest that the Bills injuries have been noted by impartial observers as well as the fans here.

Easley

Does anyone know more about the heart condition? Will he play next year or is he out for good? He’s one guy I’d really love to see on the field. I’d love to see him have a chance to show what he can do!!

There was an article up a few days ago about him being cleared to resume football activities. I think that’s all anyone knows right now.
