Drayton Florence situation
So far this year, drayton florence has accumulated the 3rd highest amount of Pass Interference penalties in the league with 4. He also is the 4th most penalized defensive back overall.
I would personally rather have leodis or corner in the game and have some combination of those 2 and aaron williams/justin rogers. He's only made a few truly meaningful plays this year with one huge 1 accounting for most of his glory, being the pick six on brady. He's made way more stupid mistakes in my opinion. Just really defensive hope gashing plays like pushing players out of balance near your own 20 when their already out, or getting a blatant PI call at or around the end zone. Sure aaron williams got the PI call this week but it was really only because he was too close to him rather than getting beat and having to compensate. Same with the close one with Rodgers. I just think that the good outweighs the bad with florence and that if we can save ourselves a good portion of his contract we should release him, give the rooks some more PT and camp reps, and draft/sign a mildly reliable to decent one. Anyone agree or have any targets we could talk about?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

IIRC the reason Florence was cut in Jacksonville
Was because he’s not very good at man coverage. He’s much better suited to zone coverage.

That is right, he was let go because he didn’t fit the system. He is a great CB when the ball/play is in front of him and can use his frame to make a play on the ball. Once he has to back-pedal and turn he struggles mightily.
It’s damn shame because he’s a good guy, but he’s not a good fit with what they’re trying to accomplish on defense.
but he’s not a good fit with what they’re trying to accomplish on defense.
then why did they resign him? why were the fans so upset when he was considering signing with the Jets – they play man coverage most of the time too

I wasn't upset at all
I was glad to have him back, but I wouldn’t have been heartbroken to lose him.

Pass Rush
Without any hint of a pass rush, Florence and the other corners are toast. He certainly has his lumps, but some of his pass interference penalties were touchdown-saving (at least at the moment of the penalty). It isn’t always bad to get the flag thrown, if it means they didn’t get in the end zone.
Now, if you want to discuss his heightened sense of self and the fact he ridiculously celebrates routine plays in games the Bills are on the wrong end of the score, then have at it. These Bills need to understand their place in the league. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have fun or anything like that, just that they need to start acting like they’ve been there before, start grinding. When they finish a season 10-6 and in the playoffs, they can show some swagger
Another season (maybe), another year getting on the roller coaster. Hope the ride lasts more than 16 games :)
Technically Speaking
All of our corners – save Williams and Rogers, are zone corners. They were all here when Nix and Co. came in . I believe the initial thought was to change the front 7 to 3-4 and keep the cover 2 zone look in the back of the defense. I’m not sure when they started transitioning, but it does seem they played a lot more man defense than they did last year and prior.
So not only were we playing 3-4 with not quite 4-3 personnel, we were playing man defense with zone corners. NO wonder our defense is terrible.

I guess this was the PILOT run on were and how and with whom we should go with 100% next year .. But then again as a Former corner myself .. you can cover in man but for so long .. eventually you will get beat .. especially the longer you are on the field for ..ie US .. especially when our OFF goes 3 and out ..

seems like all of Flo's PI penalties
have occurred during critical times and often in the end zone
and damn near all of them resulted in a TD anyway ..

And that play was gift wrapped to him via Dareus’ helmet. My grandma could’ve picked that off.
I say cut him loose.

Fact of the matter is that Florence fits on the team better as a second corner unless going against a team whose #1 WR is a big, physical guy (like Miami with Marshall or KC with Bowe). He can shut those type of guys down quite well because his game is also big and physical. He doesn’t have the long speed or change of direction speed to cover someone like DeSean Jackson or Dez Bryant (and I’m not sure any corner on the team does — maybe Leodis if his head was on straight or Rodgers as he develops).
Most of those PI penalties are actually savvy moves by a veteran to save a touchdown. A PI penalty is way better than a touchdown (like Leodis would give up when beat).
Of course, it would preferable if he didn’t get beat in the first place. Which goes back to my first point…
"We have an elite pass rushing LB who likes to conserve electricity." -- Munchausen
he has some strip fumbles too that i see haven’t been mentioned.
Consider this scenario:
Rogers can be a nickel/slot. Leodis can be a dime. Williams is the starter. Should we draft ONE starting caliber CB- then both Florence, and McGee are reduced to depth, where, they are HIGHLY effective in zone coverage, and even when covering man to man, they won’t be getting the best receivers. SO….. I say we keep him if we retain 6 CBs, assuming we draft a starter early, which should be a consideration, for sure.

for bringing up an interesting topic that isnt about the draft, first of all.
I think losing McGee to age recently has exposed D-Flo. I still think he’s a good no.2 corner. Hes just not a number 1 and shouldnt be expected to cover the guys hes covering. Letting him go now would be a mistake in my opinion. One thing Jauron had right was that you cant have too many corners. We’ve seen how much injury can derail a season, we need bodies at corner and its not an easy position to fill.

I personally don’t have an issue with him at all. He made plays last year. He has made fewer plays this year but I still think that he is a decent corner that you can depend on over a sixteen game season. He has had some bad games, but in case you haven’t noticed it hasn’t happened in a while (as far as I know). The secondary needs a better pass rush. That is what is really missing. I don’t think the secondary is the issue.
