I think I concluded somewhere he was worth something like 6-8m so makes sense his camp is on the higher end of that now, but still reasonable. Not sure thats ‘discounted’ very much though. The guarantee is a huge piece of this that is missing. But seems like they should be able to close that gap unless its huge.
The only thing that makes me nervous in all this is that somehow Ralph has just decided he doesn’t like him, be it his onfield antics or the fact he got smoked by the evans contract or whatever, and won’t pay him no matter what. Thats always an aging specter in the background for these large personnel decisions.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.
WHAT THE HELL ARE THE BILLS DOING????????
“Stevie was more than willing to do a discounted deal with the Bills because of his loyalty to the organization for giving him his chance in the NFL, his loyalty to his teammates, and his love for the city of Buffalo. Any reports of Stevie asking for 10, 9, or even 8 million dollars a year are completely false and misleading,” said Laboy.
The asking price is more than fair. This is a no brainer!!!!!!!

Agreed! BUT...
What I saw in this article is Laboy himself saying that they agreed at the start of the season that negotiations wouldn’t start again until after the season was done. And guess what Joe, there’s still 1 game to be played.
And here’s the way I look at it, if Stevie has 40 yards and 8 catches he’ll become the first Bills receiver to ever have both back to back 1000 yards and 80 catch seasons. That could definitely work in Stevie’s favor, because there is no way in hell that the Bills can afford to let Stevie go if he does that.

I read this as CHIX having already turned down this offer
whenever it was made…..even if it was the start of the season I would have done this deal. And, if this was the deal offered up by Johnson’s side at some earlier point in the season, then why wait until the end of the season now? I seriously doubt Johnson would turn the same deal down. They were able to get Fitz and Pears contracts done mid-season. Seems to me CHIX are low-balling Johnson, especially at this point in the season where it is perfectly clear his talent is deserving of a contract in this ball park.

I'm not ready to say that though.
I mean I’ll agree that they were low balling him before the start of the season. But I expect that this deal gets done before the end of January at roughly Stevie’s asking price. Because he’s definitely deserved it.
If the deal does not get done though, then I’ll see Nix and Overdorf as having massively failed in resigning the teams best QB/WR since Flutie/Moulds. And there’s not a single part of me that believes that this deal wont happen.

I hope you are right.......the players CHIX make a priority to sign midseason vs after is curious at best

Maybe not so. i mean as we are seeing right now Stevie is the hardest player for the Bills to re-sign. So it makes sense that they pushed that contract back to the off season.

Reportedly early in the season they were 2 million a season off. So if he did ask for 7.5 million the bills are trying to get him for 5 mill a year.

We're trying to get him at 5M before the season started.
There’s a big difference between trying to get him at 5M before the start of the season, and trying to get him at 5M after the season is done. I HIGHLY doubt that the Bills will put up a fight now that they are certain he’s not a 1 year wonder.

However, each one of these agents, including Laboy, did point out that the Bills have been very professional and all three had a lot of praise for the organization when speaking about dealing with them and their clients’ negotiations. The two agents who have dealt with Overdorf specifically mentioned the terrific job they feel he does and his level of professionalism whenever they’ve dealt with him.
Sounds like a new contract has a good chance before the March deadline.

This is another Fanshot that we should REC the heck out of. It's loaded with terrific info.
It has a lot of great info on Stevie for sure. But to me the best part is the insight on how the Bills’ FO works, or more precisely how important Overdorf may be to this organization.
It tells me 3 very important things: 1. Nix chooses which players to go after and Overdorf does the negotiation; 2. Nix’s forte may very well be indetifying good players in the draft and through free agency; 3. Seeing as how Overdorf was the Bills negotiator BEFORE Nix came in, it may be very possible that it’s Overdorf that Ralph Wilson Jr. trusts the most with his money.
As for the Stevie contract. What I took from this article is both Stevie’s agent and the Bills saying that this deal was going to get done AFTER the season. Stevie’s agent said it outright. So I expect the deal to get done after this Sunday’s game.
As for the asking price (7.5M/season) I think i understand why the Bills were hesitant before the season. After all 7.5M is a lot to pay for a 1 year wonder. But now that the season is about done it’s very clear that Stevie is a consistent possession receiver that plays his best when facing the league’s premier Corner Backs, having his best games against Revis, Bailey and Flowers. If for no other reason, that should bring the Bills around to the same level as Stevie’s asking price.
I fully expect to see this deal done before the end of January.

I’m prepared to be furious about this whole thing. If Johnson leaves, it’s a PR nightmare for the organization, especially considering that any FA they do sign will be very unlikely to match Johnson’s production and impact. It’d be extremely difficult for the Bills to replace Johnson in the offense, even if they draft a WR in round one or go after a big name in FA. It’d just be a straight up disaster if Johnson leaves and that’s not an opinion that I’ve had about previous recent Bills FA losses or traded players (ie: Lynch, Evans, Greer, Spikes, Poz, Whitner, Fletcher which I was wrong about, McGahee, Henry, Clements or even Winfield or the Peters trade). It’ll be the kind of blow to the lineup that only the Schobel retirement and idiotic decision to not bring Pat Williams back (especially since he wasn’t looking for a Clements type mega contract) has had on the team in the last decade. I really believe this is that important of a resign for Buffalo.
All that said, I’m feeling pretty patient about this whole situation. There’s still a long time until free agency. And if Buffalo does end up landing Johnson for a home town discount, it’ll end up being some darn good negotiating by the team. Just because WGR is reporting that Johnson is willing to take a home town discount doesn’t mean he wants to make less than he could get on the open market. I’m sure that he and his agent didn’t open their side of the negotiations at 7.5 per.

good post....and even if that is true
I’m sure that he and his agent didn’t open their side of the negotiations at 7.5 per.
It seems to be on the table now. I would jump on it now. By the way, are you watching the Alamo Bowl now?

I watched most of the Arena League Alamo Bowl. Huskies had one of the worst defenses in all of college and it showed. Baylors D played almost as bad. One of the worst bowl match-ups this year. It was 12th ranked Baylor playing a home game vs an unranked Washington team.
Great game for fans of no-D shoot-outs, crappy game otherwise.

I agree

At this price figure, I hope the FO doesn’t even think about putting a franchise tag on him. That would be idiotic, IMO.

They’re not stupid dude. If that is what he is still asking for, it wouldn’t make any sense for them to put the franchise tag on him.

You are talking about the Buffalo Bills FO,right?

so much truth
It’d be extremely difficult for the Bills to replace Johnson in the offense, even if they draft a WR in round one or go after a big name in FA.
consider that even WITH stevie on board they still need another WR. If they don’t sign him? ugh
PAY THE MAN
Everything is BS......
…. some crap leaked by an “insider” in on OBD, some over the season I’m sure by Steve’s agent.
Such garbage.
Both sides appear to want to get a fair deal done. It will.
Unless you are P Poz who said the same “I want to be a Bill forever” crap last year.
And then ran away for the big money.
That really pissed me off. But, I can’t blame him.
And I’m glad the Bills did not pay him what he got.
JUST SIGN STEVIE NOW BUDDY!
