I’ve been in denial for a while now, always shrugging off Maybin’s sacks as “coverage sacks” or “hustle sacks.” Surely, he’s only making plays now that he’s a Jet and has a competent defense around him. Surely, he’s just been lucky. Surely, his disappointing performance here, in Buffalo, is a more accurate representation of how his career will turn out…
But now, in just seven games, Maybin has six sacks (more than any Bills player) and four—yes, four!—forced fumbles. In his latest game against the Skins, he pretty much sealed the team’s victory with a dazzling inside move on their RT, forcing yet another fumble. (You can watch it here: http://www.newyorkjets.com/photos-and-videos/videos/Maybin-Sacks-Grossman/4b2d9515-cce0-4aaa-806d-07cc4815cbb1)
While I was not disappointed when I heard the news of Maybin's release from the Bills, I can’t help but wonder: Was it too soon? He’s still incredibly young (23); perhaps he could have been given another couple years to develop, or better utilized as a situational pass rusher? Or maybe Maybin will once again descend into mediocrity, never amounting to the great pass rusher we all hoped he'd one day be?
So, fellow Rumblers, what do you think?
