What needs to be done in the offseason but probably will not

After watching this season slip away here is what would help next season better.

1. Fire George Edwards. He had two seasons to put into place a defense that can handle the AFC East. He did not so give Wannstedt the chance. He is proven and we would be better.

2. Let Roscoe Parrish, Donald Jones, Chris Kelsey, Tyler Thigpen, and Terrance Mcgee go. Later will explain Parrish and Jones. Kelsey has a big heart but no sacks. the OLB in our system has to hit the quarterbacks and get sacks. He does not he is gone. Mcgee cannot stay healthy nuff said. Thigpen will be explained later.

3. Sign Vincent Jackson to #1 WR money. Sign Stevie Johnson and Fred Jackson. This can be done. Stevie is a solid #2 WR and would be a compliment to Jackson. Fred just needs to get a front loaded 5 year/25 million deal paying him 18 over the first 3 years. With the Vincent Jackson signing it makes Parrish and Jones expendable.

4. Make Brad Smith the #2 QB. I know this sounds radical but think about it. He can really learn to throw during the preseason and can still come in and run the wildcat but he could throw out of it. Scary thing to think about for opposing defenses. Thigpen is just holding a clipboard and getting hit in the head with the football (see Washington tape).

5. Draft the best available pass rushing OLB's in the first two rounds of the draft. I want players who have done this more than one season. Maybin should not have been a Buffalo Bill. We need that more than anything. We have a defensive line when healthy. We have a solid secondary but we cannot get after the passer. The rest of the draft can go after the best CB, QB, and OL and DL available. Speed and experience being a priority.

6. Keep Bell and Merriman. Bell maybe a better bet to start on the right side of the line. Merriman, if the price is right, can help with a pass rush.

If the Bills front office did this we would be in the playoffs next year.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

1. I understand your thinking regarding Edwards, but if Buffalo’s biggest need is a pass-rusher, doesn’t that mean that Edwards has been somewhat hand-cuffed in developing this unit.

2. If there are capable replacements for Kelsey, the sure, dump his contract. I would keep Jones (sp. teams performer, WR depth), McGee, and Parrish, if possible. Thigpen, see Brad Smith, #4.

3. VJ and SJ would be terrific. Sign FJax

4. Interesting idea that I could get behind.

5. Coples and Curry?

6. Agreed.

I agree in Edwards being fired, as does probably 99% of Bills Nation

I was always a critic of Kelsey, but he actually has done a decent job this season. He sets the edge against the run, and has done well in his role. Parrish won’t be signed because of his constant injuries. I don’t think Donald Jones belongs in the NFL, so I would be more than happy for him to go. Thigpen is beyond terrible, and he should be cut loose. McGee also should be let go. He’s done a great job as a Buffalo Bill, but we can’t count on him anymore.

It would be awesome to have Vincent Jackson here. But signing Stevie is a bigger priority in my opinion. I know everyone wants to see Freddy get paid. Yes, he deserves it, but he also has another year remaining on his contract. I wouldn’t even consider it a 5 year deal either.

Brad Smith as a QB just doesn’t seem like a good move. He’s made some plays as a reciever, so why not keep him there? He has missed several throws that were wide open. He is a worse backup QB than Thigpen in my opinion.

Clearly the biggest need is a pass rushing OLB. But I won’t reach just to fill a position. If there is another player that Buffalo is high on, I would have no problem taking that. We can’t afford to pass over quality football players to fill up one position. (CB, ILB, Franchise QB comes to mind)

Yeah, I would definitely try out Merriman again. He’s got one more year under contract, so why not? I would also sign Bell, but not if he tries to get big money. He is also another unreliable player health-wise.

Is this your homework, Larry?

I think this would be a good way to actually make the team worse.
mcgee and roscoe are pretty useless, they cant stay healthy. ill agree with u on them but those are layups

smith is not half the QB thigpen is. making smith the #2 option just means that fitz being injured would ruin the entire season. thigpen got a sizeable 3 yr deal and is not going anywhere by next season

bills are paper thin at OLB, and u want to get rid of their only steady player in the unit? kelsay has his shortcomings, but cutting him when hes the best OLB they got would just be silly.

same with donald jones. bills are thin as hell at receiver and u want to cut jones? what about martin, or roosevelt? or hagan or aiken? jones is catching flak bc he was a bad #2 option, but that does not make him a bad #4 or 5 option. as a backup receiver and special teamer? donald jones is actually very good for that role

signing jackson is fun to fantasize about, but paying stevie johnson needs to be the priority. johnson will demand (and deserves) #1 WR money. itll be near impossible (and probably a bit foolish) to hand out enormous contracts to both of them. that amount of money shouldnt be focused just on the receivers

taking “best available OLB” would make sense, only if the value is there. i dont want them taking some mediocre pass rusher but passing on 5 future pro bowlers from other positions to do so. thats the jauron method of drafting, and is a horrible way to build a football team

“if the price is right”? merriman is under contract next season. the price for him to stay is already set. all theyd need to do for him to come to camp is not cut him

so ya i tend to disagree with just about all of this

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

I think that cutting our most solid (if unspectacular) OLB is a terrible move, and would really hate it, especially after giving him a contract.

I would also dislike dropping Jones. As boomsauce said above, he’s a perfectly viable #4 or #5…I want them to draft a stud to become #1 in a year or two, but not drop Jones in the process.

I don’t want our backup QB to have to “learn how to throw”. Thigpen, for all his drawbacks, is at least a pocket passer who has thrown in the NFL.

I agree with drafting OLBs, if the value is there, and keeping Merriman and Bell.

I agree on Edwards being fired, but where does the Wannstedt love come from. I feel like this is one of those examples where we’re just being homers and if a divisional team hired him as a DC, we’d make fun of them.

Wannstedt hasn’t been a defensive coordinator since the 90s and has never coached a 3-4 team. The only season he had as the DC with Miami (1999) was a dissapointment as they finished 19th in the league in scoring defense despite having super star Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas and Sam Madison in their primes and good plays like Terrell Buckley, Patrick Surtain, Daryl Gardner, Rich Owens, Lorenzo Bromell and Trace Armstrong.

Before Miami, He was a failed HC with Chicago and before that he was a great DC in Dallas from 1989-1992. In Wannstedt, we’re talking about a guy who had almost every bit of coaching success he’s ever had as a coordinator for the great Jimmy Johnson. A guy who totally failed as Mike Ditka’s replacement in Chicago and only got the Miami job because he was Johnson’s #2 guy there. Wannstedt was an underachieving mediocre HC in Miami and a mediocre underachieving HC at Pitt.

I don’t understand the logic of letting go a (soon to be) 3rd year WR like Donald Jones, who makes peanuts, can play special teams and provides solid depth.

Merriman, if the price is right, can help with a pass rush.

Merriman showed earlier this season that he could not help the pass rush. And we know the price, it’s about 5 mil and IMO the price is wrong. Keeping Merriman and cutting Kelsay is all different kinds of backwards to me. You say Kelsay doesn’t have a sack, but Meriman has one this year after having none in 2010. Merriman has been placed on IR three times in the last two seasons. That’s not an easy thing to accomplish. Seriously, can somebody explain to me why they think Merriman will be healthy and/or effective this year after being less healthy every year over the last 3 or 4 seasons and putting up 5 sacks in his last 4 NFL seasons?

Five years for Fred Jackson? He turns 31 this offseason. He’s under contract for next year, just give the guy a nice two year extension where he can pocket a pretty big signing bonus and then have a fairly low yearly salary for a few seasons. Something like a 5-6 mil signing bonus on top of his 2 mil salary for next year and then a couple 4 mil per year salaries that he’ll have to earn by staying effective into his 30s. Everybody wins and the Bills don’t commit to much. It’s not like anybody is going to give him a big contract in the 2012-2013 offseason right after he turns 32 years old.

I want players who have done this more than one season. Maybin should not have been a Buffalo Bill

Yeah, who would want some one year contributor like Clay Matthews. What a bust that guy was. Maybin came out of school as a sophomore. Of course he only had one good year in college. Unless you think his 4 sack season as a redshirt freshman was a disaster or something.

Sign Vincent Jackson to #1 WR money. Sign Stevie Johnson and Fred Jackson.

Agree. If they don’t feel there’s an OLB worthy of there selection, they can always do something crazy (cough) draft Jeffrey/Floyd (cough).

Jackson – Johnson – Nelson – Jeffery

Ah. I can just picture the 4 wide sets now. Of course with a WR lineup like that with Jackson/Spiller at RB, who needs a defense?

Da'Jon McKnight - WR (Minnesota) - 6'3'' 211Lbs. (4th Round)

Buffalo's best chance to win next year could conceivable come from two 2012 OLB Prospects: One many named Courtney (Upshaw), and one man named Whitney (Mercilus). Have them rush behind the Behemoth named Leslie and we'll be set.

that sounds like a really good idea

he is a good 3-4 coordinator. unlike wannestedt, and edwards clearly isn’t.

It's Simple

Draft Justin Blackmon, acquire a free agent pass rusher (a real one!), add depth in draft on defense, and stay healthy…..

by snaves1027 on Dec 8, 2011 8:42 AM EST reply actions

I'd love Blackmon.

But he’s probably going top 3. I heard that Kalil might be staying in college, don’t know if that is true, but if so Blackmon is probably going to St. Louis, and if not St. Louis to Minnesota.
