One on the leagues better run defenders from a year ago is looking like he will be a FA. The Bill's have the worst run defense in the league. Now that this news is on the home page, is inevitable that his name will come up in conversation here on the blogs for at least a couple weeks now. I'm not going to take a position on whether or not we should get this guy, but I just thought this would be worth the discussion here on the blogs.
Reportedely Soliai is seeking a big pay day. Buddy Nix said that he will build this team through the draft and avoid big name free agents. It seems likely he will stick to his word and not throw huge money at this one year wonder (from what I understand), but is there a chance he makes an exception here? The run defense is so bad and adding a big body in the middle gives us A LOT more flexability in the draft to take top prospects/BPA rather than need. It also frees up Kyle Williams to be used in a lot of different ways in different fronts that fit his strengths best.
Lets say we released Stroud and signed Poliai and did nothing else in FA other than sign some depth, then drafted:
1. Peterson/Green/Miller (Please don't make this an argument for which guy you want to draft at 3rd overall, I am just saying we draft an elite talent at some position other than DE/DT)
2. Martez Wilson, ILB
3. Luke Stocker, TE
4. Jason Pinkston, OT
4. Take your pick
I don't know about you, but that sounds like it would be an outstanding offseason and a big step in the right direction as we rebuild the team.
That being said, I don't know a whole lot about Soliai. Maybe he is going to get overpaid due to one good year and then disappear. Maybe he will be a solid player for 5 years, but Nix sticks to his word and doesn't want to make a big splash in FA. Maybe Soliai wants nothing to do with Buffalo. Who knows?
But I thought it was worth the discussion. Thoughts?
