Most Crucial Pick Since 1985?

I have been a Bills fan for 30 years now. And I think this #3 draft pick is the most important pick since we had the first overall pick in 1985. I think this pick is going to make or break our team for the next 5-10 years. I know we had the 4th overall pick in 2002 and blew that one badly with Mike Williams, but our organization was not in the same mess that we are in now. And we've been in this mess for an extended period of time.

This is the pick that will define our team for the future. And we absolutely can't afford to make a mistake with this pick. Now we could certainly go the 'safe' route and take Peterson, Green, Dareus, or Jordan. I honestly don't see any of those guys being a 'bust' five years from now. They may not make elite status, but I think their downside is very low.

However, as we all know, we've been looking for an elite QB for a long time. And not just a QB, but a face for the franchise. An identity for our team. A ray of light at the end of the tunnel. I don't think any of us will view a CB, DE or WR as a hope for our future. We need our QB and I don't believe we need someone like Ponder in the second round. He may be the most NFL-ready QB in the draft, but I just can't see him being an upper-echelon QB.

So, what we need is either Newton or Gabbert in the first round. I can live with OBD selecting one of those guys and they end up being a bust. I can't live with OBD passing on those guys and one (or both) of them developing into franchise QBs for another team.

I watched almost every one of Newton's games this year and I believe in the guy. His talent is unquestionable and I just hope he has the work ethic to be great. I honestly know very little about Gabbert. I am anxiously awaiting 'Blaine Gabbert Day' on Buffalo Rumblings (hint, hint Brian) so I can learn more about him.

I don't think OBD has to be 100% sold that either of these guys will be a franchise QB. They obviously both have the physical gifts to be great. And I believe in Chan's ability to coach them up. So in my opinion, if OBD has a reasonable belief that one of these guys can be a franchise QB, they have to take the risk.

So I am advocating that we take a chance on a QB that has elite potential. I can live with it if they don't pan out. I will not be able to watch football anymore if we pass on these guys and they become stars for other teams. I don't think I can take that.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
