Bob Sanders?

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/02/18/colts-cut-bob-sanders/

I know, I know... this is like a BBMB.com post. "OMG [enter ex-stars name] was released hes the Bills answer!!!!" So Im sorry if it comes off that way... but Indianapolis has released SS Bob Sanders. Now I would be open to the idea (if healthy) for Buffalo to be one of the teams to try and sign him. Get him a deal like we gave Merriman, insentive based. With the departure of Whitner, most likely/hopefully, we need a SS and he was one of the, if not the best in the league. Id be willing to take a flyer on this guy. He has leadership and intesity that players could feed off of. Id be behind this if Nix pursued...

What do you guys think?

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Why would the Colts let him go?

Is it money ala Whitner? Is it because he is no longer the player he once was? Has his recent injury riddled career caught up to him and he is no longer a dependable option period. I guess I would have allot of questions first. He was a major contributor to that defense when healthy.

Hes only played in 9 games since their SB win. I wouldnt do this if he wasnt healthy… but have the Docs take a look at him and if he checks out, offer him a Merriman-like contract… more $$ with more games played, ints, etc…

I'd go that rout too.

I mean we took a chance with Dwan Edwards and it paid off. Merriman? It very well could. If he’s willing to be a Bill, I’d take him in a second.

As for why the Colts released him. The 9 games in the past 2 years is a HUGE factor, as well as the fact that they also found another good, and cheaper, SS this past season. Sanders became expendable.

It’s actually nine regular season games in the past three seasons and 48 games in a 7 year career. Pretty abysmal. He played 6 games and a wildcard matchup in 2008. And he has a grand total of three tackles in three games over the last two seasons.

I’m not a huge fan of the idea of adding a second major injury risk to this defense. Let’s roll the dice on Merriman and stay conservative at strong safety; safety strikes me as a “final piece of the puzzle” addition, anyway.

I don’t see Sanders wanting to play in Buffalo regardless. He’s been on a consistent playoff contender for his entire career. Why change now? I can see a team like Baltimore making a run at him.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

Would rather Whitner

If he’s cheap enough, then I’m interested, but if he’s going to go cheap, it’ll probably be to an actual contender. I doubt he’d take a low money, short term deal here and that’s the only thing I’d be interested in giving to a guy who has played 9 games in three seasons.

ya dont like having two injury prone starters…. if he was cheap and we lost donte i would do it but he wont be.. and their are plenty of other teams he’d prob be interested in first.. like the texans or something.. i like mr george wilson. the dude makes plays. maybe he can actually cover a TE.

I'm down

Re-sign George Wilson as an insurance policy though. We know Wilson can play and is good enough to man the position. He’s not an all-star, but few are at this position. If Sanders works out, then we have one of those stars, if not, we have an average and steady contributor that is a team captain.

This...

is a way better option. bring atogwe

by Fernando brazil on Feb 18, 2011 6:13 PM EST up reply actions

Why?

Where would Byrd play since they both play FS? Why add Atogwe when we already have a player with the same attributes and weaknesses in Byrd?

Atogwe is actually an SS K, although his stats would indicate otherwise. I think he’s the best coverage SS in the league.

Nope, he's a FS

Craig Dahl was the Rams starting SS for just about the whole season this year. Atogwe was their FS, and is also listed as one on every website. Whenever I watched the Rams, Atogwe was lined up deep.

he may have played more FS this season

but Atogwe is a SS… just because he can play both dont mean that he’s a FS. I would love to see Atogwe in the Bills new uniforms.

I still remember flying paper airplanes at One Bills Drive during a game against the Redskins during the strike year... my first Bills game.

I own a Rob Johnson signed jersey, so with that in mind if i like the Bills QB just expect him to fall on a football and break his ribs.

Well I think it’s more a testament to versatility, but he STARTED as an SS. Although after doing a bit of research, K was right, he was a FS this season.

He's always played FS

Last year James Butler played SS, the three previous years it was Corey Chavous. Atogwe has been the FS the entire time. I don’t know where this Atogwe at SS is coming from???

i think he could be a good SS

even if he has been playing FS.

we are not going to bring back Whit and Scott and Wilson are cheep.

Entirely agree. I would love to have a canadian kid on the Bills. Plus he’s a heck of an SS in coverage and is very good against the run.

Just posted this in the fanshot section

didn’t realize you already had it up here. like I said there I like the guy and if he can be had for a 1 or 2 year deal at a decent price then sure. It doesn’t seem like Donte is coming back and now there’s a hole at safety. Resign Wilson and if Sanders can be had for a decent contract then sure why not.

lets go for it

if he is heathy get bob here asap

by zoomer on Feb 18, 2011 10:45 PM EST reply actions

And if we could get him 4 cheap

why not. Or atogwe from the rams asomougha from the raiders and shaun rogers from the browns. but we all know that is not the buffalo way.

by lets go buffalo on Feb 19, 2011 12:01 AM EST up reply actions

Normaly I would be against signing an injury prone player

but I wouldnt mind it so much here if like you guys have said if we can get him on some kind of a pay per game basis contract. The thing is I think we can get Wilson back, and then I wouldnt be so scared of Sanders getting hurt, and when he is healthy he would be a big impact for our team. It would be different if we did not have solid depth behind him.

Buffalo

Home for oft injuried aging pro athletes. No thanks perfer the youth movement and lack of injury history please.

And Buffalo selects "God only knows" in rd. 1 pick 3. Bank on it!

Really

Weren’t we all concerned about rash of injuries, now we want to go out and sign them injured. I’ll pass.

Wilson

I’d rather see if Wilson can step up to the task. If that doesn’t work, then fill the spot with a good draft pick next year. Sanders will probably cost too much for what he’s worth. Spend the money elsewhere
