Jake Locker is my target if were planning on taking a QB in the first two rounds. Cam is too risky at #3, Gabbert has done nothing to show me he is worthy of being the guy at #3, Ponder does not have the potential to be a franchise guy, Kaepernick is too much of a project to pick in the 2nd, and Mallet is a poor fit for our offense.
The problem is Lockers value doesn't fit our draft position. He is a reach at #3 and will be gone by #34. So in my eyes, this leaves us three options:
1) Draft Locker at #3:
This is my least preferred of the 3 choices, but if CHIX likes Locker as our franchise QB and they can't find a trade partner it may be what it takes to land him.
2) Trade down with Tennessee/Dallas and draft Locker at #8/9:
There is plenty of reason to believe both Tennessee and Dallas will be looking to move up to grab Cam/Gabbert (TEN) or Peterson (DAL), and the Bills could easily land an extra 2nd round pick with this trade. In this scenario, the Bills want to take Locker but see it as likely that either Washington, Minnesota, Miami, or Jacksonville will pull the trigger and draft him.
3) Trade up to #17-24 and draft Locker:
In this situation the Bills feel confident that Locker will fall out of the top 16 and elect to take a top tier defensive player and use a 2nd and 3rd to trade up to grab Jake. This would leave the Bills picking twice in the 1st round and twice in the 4th.
Focusing on the latter two options, lets look at two mock drafts to see what each situation would leave the Bills coming away with in the first 4 rounds of the draft.
Trading Down for Locker:
#8) Jake Locker (QB, Washington)
#34) Martez Wilson (ILB, Illinois)
#39/40) Muhammad Wilkerson (DE, Temple)
#66) Orlando Franklin (OT, Miami)
#98) Mark Herzlich (OLB, BC)
#121) Demarcus Van Dyke (CB, Miami)
Trading Up for Locker:
#3) Marcell Dareus (DE, Alabama)
#17-24) Jake Locker (QB, Washington)
#98) Casey Matthews (ILB, Oregon)
#121) Jason Pinkston (OT, Pittsburgh)
Which of these scenarios would you prefer?
