NFL Armageddon....Is it time to Kill the Golden Goose?

I am getting fed up with the NFL and the players union.  Tickets cost to much, players salaries are way to high, stadiums cost owners to much to build on their own and taxpayers understandably don't want to or can't handle another tax increase to help.  Maybe it is time to start over?

Star-divide

What is stopping owners from leaving the NFL?  Owners own their team right?  Could all or a group of owners leave the NFL and form a new league...say the GFL (Global Football League).  Do owners own the name and logo rights or does the NFL.....another words, could the Bills still be the Bills in the GFL?  Cut ticket prices and player salaries in half.  Give players lifetime health coverage.  Require owners to set aside a portion of the profits to build a new stadium....say every 30 years.  Do whatever else is needed.  They already have the infrastructure in place.....what is stopping them?  Owners would certainly lose a great deal of money in the short term.  I'm sure the value of a "new" team in a new league wouldn't be as great to start, but if all or the majority of the owners went for it, the value of the teams would rise quickly.  Don't get me wrong, I would hate to see the end of the NFL, but if the players push the owners to far????

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Interesting

But the only conceivable way this would work, in my mind, is for the entire current NFL structure to set up shop in the new league. If not, then I just don’t see the same appeal. People won’t want a new league (or else everybody would start following the NCAA, CFL, etc.) at this point in time.

But I’m still hopeful that everyone will get their heads out of where they don’t belong and get this thing together.

I am not sure if the entire NFL would have to...but it would be best

The AFL and NFL existed independently until it became in there best interest to merge.

then I just don’t see the same appeal. People won’t want a new league

For me, the key would be if the Buffalo Bills could remain the Bills in the new league. My loyalty it to the Bills, not the NFL.

Agreed. That would be the smart thing for all parties.

Rec'd, and rec'd again....

for this remark….

Went to my first "BB" meeting today... When I stood, introduced myself, and admitted I was a Billsaholic, the other members threw beer cans at me!!

Simple answer,

why would the owners ever do this? They would lose short term and long-term there really wouldn’t be anything to gain. Most of the ideas you suggested for the new league are things that the owners wouldn’t want, so I have no idea why you would think they would ever do this.

by Xaviermw on Mar 19, 2011 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

Why...because the owners would get what they really want

the ability to set up a long term business model that would allow the league to grow for the next 50 years. If the new league was successful, the owners would absolutely make the money they lost back and then some….might take 10 years but it would happen.

Most of the ideas you suggested for the new league are things that the owners wouldn’t want

I disagree. The owners want a rookie wage scale, 18 game schedule, a better business model, most want updated or new stadiums, lower ticket prices would increase the odds of having full stadiums on Sundays, therefore more money made from parking, concessions, etc.

i would say youre on to something

the current nfl is like americas current medicaid situation it needs to be blown up one adjustment i would say

not necessarily pay players less but pay them that money over the course of 30 years or so this way players always will have money not short term but long term
this way owners cost go way down since they wouldnt have to fork over 30 mill right away which in turn should lower the costs of tickets and concessions

where oh where has aaron maybin gone oh where can he be
was picked so high and not one has seen oh where can maybin be
seriously where the hell is he ?

the sad part is that both things could easily be fix....people just lack the will to do it the right way.

NFL

As far as I’m concerned the longer this goes on the less I care about the NFL. Theres always college ball and soccer is very popular in the Seattle area so I might start backing the Seattle team. This is a very bad economy in which the NFL payers and owners fighting over a billion $ pie paid for by fans, its sickening! I’ll watch something else. Screw them both!

A QB is like a Queen or King in chess, if you don't have one you lose! Get a QB Buffalo!

The first thing I’d want is fewer commercials. Sometimes it’s just difficult to watch a game with commercial breaks at every timeout and after every kickoff.

You mean you don’t want to listen to “The Geico Halftime Show brought to you by Miller Lite” while watching the Buffalo Bills play the Minnesota Vikings on “Mall of America Field” in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome?

ha. No other sport forces its fans to be so inundated with advertisements. The NHL, MLB, and soccer leagues are so much better…. Watching an NFL game is like reading a magazine that’s 3/4ths ads and 1/4th substance.

I believe the owners collectively own the “NFL” brand. I too believe that the whole thing is broke and needs to complete overhaul, actually I’m working on a piece that I intend on publishing next week where I will detail it.

I do like some of your concepts. As for the cutting of prices, although I’d love to see it happen, the reality is that people are willing to pay these ridiculous prices. In most cases it’s probably businesses buying them but it’s because of the overall popularity so either way you slice it, the game has become a machine and i don’t see any end soon.
