Let's assume that the vast majority of Buffalo Bills fans are up in arms about the fact that there's a palpable buzz surrounding the idea that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton might be the Bills' first-round pick this year. Keep in mind that "up in arms" could convey excitement, disgust, or simply an eager urge to learn as much as possible about the nature of the buzz.)
There's one thing you need to keep in mind about Newton's Monday visit to Orchard Park: this is more due diligence on Buffalo's part.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey did not attend Newton's pro day at Auburn; he explains why here. As such, the only exposure Gailey has to Newton is a bunch of game tape and, in all likelihood, a 15-minute interview at the 2011 NFL Combine. It would be pretty ridiculous if Gailey had a hard opinion on Newton's football IQ from that. Meanwhile, GM Buddy Nix has seen more, heard more, and spent time with Newton. Gailey needs to catch up, and to make sure he's comfortable with the idea of Newton running his offense.
Reportedly, that's exactly what will happen Monday - Newton will meet with Gailey, and they'll talk chalk. That report also indicates that of everyone at One Bills Drive, Gailey is among those that need convincing with respect to Newton. He's smart enough to make up his own mind, and Monday's due diligence into Newton's football smarts will go a long way in helping Gailey do that.
