There is a video over at buffalobills.com titled 'Gailey on Newton's visit'. There's no real news about Gailey and Newton. Gailey talks about liking the visit, which could mean anything from "he's our instant pick at #3 if he's on the board" to "I like eating out on the company dime". The most interesting part of the video is actually of Nix, who drops a couple of nuggets.
1:30 into the video -- "As of yesterday we can't discuss with other teams trades. So that's out unless it changes between now and draft day"
I'm not sure if he's talking about trading picks before the draft or if right now it looks like trades won't be allowed. I can't imagine why trading draft picks would be verboten, pending litigation or not. But I also can't see much reason for teams to trade picks before the draft actually begins--I can see coming to an understanding on a deal in principle and then pullilng the trigger during the draft....but not trading picks ahead of the draft. Curious. Has anyone read anything credible that suggests trades may not be allowed on draft day? If so, anyone want to start a pool on exactly when Belichek's head explodes?
1:40 into the video -- "We are open to trade down. I'm not sure that's always the answer. If there's a guy you really want at your pick you better take him. If you think you can trade down and still get the guy you want a lot of times your disappointed."
Given that I love trade scenarios, I'm choosing to focus on the first sentence in that quote, never mind that most of it is a rambling rationale for failing to maximize the value of Buffalo's picks. This is particularly a concern this year. At the end of the clip Chris Brown states that Gailey is happy about the compensatory 7th rounder because "there may not be undrafted free agency this year". In other words, if the Bills have to go with the guys on the roster and the guys picked in the draft, Gailey is happy to get an extra guy. I'd think he'd be even happier to get still another guy or two, particularly if those guys didn't come from just the 7th round.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
