2011 NFL Draft: Auburn, Arkansas Hold Pro Days Today

Photo

For those of you irritated by hype and fanfare, you may want to avoid ESPN3.com today at 1:30 PM ET. That's when the worldwide leader will be broadcasting the Auburn pro day - headlined, of course, by star junior quarterback Cameron Newton. (Buddy Nix will be there.)

Auburn's pro day will feature more than just Newton, however, with defensive tackle Nick Fairley becoming the second of our Buffalo Bills Baker's Dozen to be working out at a pro day today. Several other intriguing Auburn prospects will be on the field as well, including prominent Combine snub Josh Bynes, an inside linebacker.

Much to the chagrin of GMs everywhere, today is also Arkansas' pro day, meaning that star quarterback Ryan Mallett will be making his final public pro audition by day's end, as well. Mallett, who threw the ball better than anyone at the Combine, is expected to take part in more athletic tests today - and though his stock will be volatile thanks to alleged character concerns, another strong outing could make him a lock for the first round.

Busy day ahead - and if you're into watching football players work out, be sure to hit up ESPN3.com at 1:30. (Which is approximately 15 minutes from now.)

I'm more concerned with Mallett

I feel like Newton is guaranteed to go near the top, and his pro day isn’t going ot shift it very much. Mallett, on the other hand, could move up or down quite a bit.

Mallett ran a 5.37 40 today.

Holy crap that’s slow! I mean I know he’s not a “mobile” qb but dang!

I wonder what Jim Kelly would have run (ran?) in the 40. Or Marino, or other pocket passers.

by Pistol on Mar 8, 2011 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Marino

would still be running

well i know mallet isnt going to need speed to be a good qb. like you said kelly marino elway etc. prob ran would have or did run slow 40 times. all i was saying was that a young 22 yr old kid is slower than most line 300 pound linemen.. that all hahaha

A QB in Buffalo needs to have wheels and aptitude in using them.

Well, that certainly didn’t help his stock :)

He Has Todd Collins Written All Over

Like Todd he has a good arm and college experience, but not a mobile guy and a guy who slacks off and parties more than he should

Those Todd Collins parties were epic.

I ran a 5.45 40 as a college rugby player

and I’m a tall, not-known-for-my-speed female. wow.

I’d like to think that cam at three wouldn’t haunt us.. Or not taking cam wouldn’t haunt us… but I’m way more into having mallet… We get a stud defensive guy and then maybe trade up a bit to get mallet. If he slipped. I’d be one happy guy.

by doctork44 on Mar 8, 2011 9:15 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Interestingly? Gailey isn’t at Auburn’s pro day. Not sure if there’s anything to be read into that.

by Pistol on Mar 8, 2011 2:04 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Mallet will not be in Buffalo.

Gailey likes atheltic qbs. Mallet is the opposite off that. Plus the guy has no pocket presence and he is A pocket passer. He just freezes when he see the rush or makes a bad pass. I personally never want to see him in a bills uni. He also does not fit the direction the league is goin at qb. we also do not have the line for him to play under.

Newton to Make Buffalo an Entertaining Town?

Just thought I’d share that question after hearing it on ESPN3

by DynamicHero22 on Mar 8, 2011 2:17 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn’t take it personally. What the hell does David Pollack, of all people, really know about Buffalo?

Yah just seems like over use of the entertainer/icon quote. The amount of analysts on tv using that is stupid and annoying. You can not get through a sports show with outt something like i am an entertainer and and icon.

The trend is for QBs that extend plays with their feet. Not necessarily a scrambler, but someone who can buy time by moving laterally like big Ben or Rogers.

by Montel on Mar 8, 2011 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Excatly my point. I did not say you have to run a 4.5 40 to be a qb but you do have to be mobile. Go look up the plays mallet has made outside of the pocket in hia years as a starter and ill guess you can hold the number on one hand.

by matthew62 on Mar 8, 2011 2:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Just think, as he ages he will get slower!

but that would bend the rules of physics!

but really, he’d be ungodly slow

I may have scored a hundred points yesterday, but I scored a lot more off the court.

by Adam_K on Mar 8, 2011 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

First time post so please be gentle haha but I’m wondering what we would do if we select Fairely. He’s great off the snap and very explosive/dangerous in getting to the QB. Do you think we would kick him out to end, a head of Carrington, or put him at NT and kick meatball out to end? assuming we take him at #3.

by wide-right blues12 on Mar 8, 2011 2:35 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Keep What is Working

Kyle at NT, Fairley at DE, with Carrington switching in and out with Edwards and Fairley

by DynamicHero22 on Mar 8, 2011 2:43 PM EST up reply actions

Williams – Troup – Fairley would be likely as well, w/ Carrinton & Edwards rotational DEs

by dgrid on Mar 8, 2011 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

Question

What were Fairley and Newton’s 40 times?

by DynamicHero22 on Mar 8, 2011 2:42 PM EST reply actions

Fairley ran an official 4.89 and Newton ran a 4.52 at the Combine. Thanks for the response. I was thinking the same. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

by wide-right blues12 on Mar 8, 2011 2:46 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Officially, Newton ran 4.59 and Fairley 4.86. They did not run today.

Meh. Brady ran a 5.23. It’s all about your style of offense and the guys protecting you.

When its brady or peyton rushing him is a pretty simple concept. Get through the offensive line and run as fast as you can onto him. when you put big ben or rodgers in their it complicates your rushing plan

by matthew62 on Mar 8, 2011 3:55 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No doubt. I’m just saying that a slow 40 time for a QB doesn’t matter as much for their success as the situation they are brought into.

Yah some analysts are not profesional and look down at buffalo. I have heard plenty that believe gailey has buffalo headed in the right direction and such. If we stick on the right path in a few years we may be a force to be reckoned with. I do like the fact that if we beat the steelers last season they prolly would not have gotten to the superbowl.

by matthew62 on Mar 8, 2011 3:24 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

No Pollack is a total DOUCHE!! I got tired of hearing about him when at Georgia. They always said he had a motor and never quit, basically they meant average white player on defense. That was sure an NFL career that was over before it started.
