This is my first post so…FLAME ON. I expect to get fully scorched!
Ron Rivera isn’t comfortable with his first draft pick as the Panthers head coach being the first overall pick in the draft. Without a clear cut number one selection the potential for a bust is too high. That’s not a good way start a coaching career. Ron sees Buffalo sitting at #3 and figures they might want to have a go at Cam Newton. So he starts building hype that the Panthers want to draft Cam first, hoping Chan Gaily will bite. Chan’s not so easily fooled; he knows it’s a decoy right away. But he does have his eye on Denver at #2. Chan probably finds it highly unlikely that John Fox is willing to stand pat with Tim Tebow and/or Kyle Orton at the helm. He reckons ol’ Johnny boy is making a play for Blaine Gabbert with the intention of trading one of the other two away once the CBA is settled, and Gabbert is who Chan is really trying to go after. So what does Chan do?
Here’s how it will go down on draft day…
Chan pulls the trigger and trades with Carolina, but to Ron and John’s dismay he takes Gabbert #1. Denver, not willing to take a chance on a newer version (Newton) of an existing QB on their roster (Tebow), takes DB Patrick Peterson to go along side and eventually replace Champ Baily. Carolina finds themselves right back where they started and are forced to take the big risk in Cam Newton.
That’s it…That’s my mini mock of the first three picks in the 2011 NFL Draft. Is it unlikely? Yes, absolutely! Is it factual? Nope, not one bit! How about entertaining? We’ll see.
