It struck me today that nobody within the Rumblings community is really talking about the 800 pound gorilla in the room. For weeks we’ve been focused on the defense, the hybrid 3-4 / 4-3, pass rush and stopping the run. Just my swag, but I would guesstimate almost 75% of us are sold that defensive value is the need for this team. Additionally, when we do talk about QB, we talk about the starting QB. We talk about that “Franchise QB” and whether or not Fitz is the man. And, if Fitz is not the man, can Newton or Gabbert be that guy?
So, if we go back to the theory that Buffalo drafts defense, defense and more defense; I think at some point the question of QB need really comes into play. I think giving the keys to Fitz in 2011 is the right thing. Heck, I believe he earned it and who knows how much he can improve under another year in Chan’s system. But, who the heck is going to back him up? In this day and age it is very unrealistic that Fitz will start or play in all 16 games. Somebody has to be there to step in. And I for one have let that bandwagon come and go on Brohm. (Please, no more arguments on the guy has never gotten a real chance, blah, blah, blah…) Additionally, does anyone really think Levi Brown is up to the task?
With this conventional thinking, I believe it is almost certain the BILLS brass will have to grab a QB prospect either by trading back up into the first round or waiting to see what falls to them in round two. I think Ponder, Dalton or Stanzi will have to be a BILL in 2011; just by need alone if Buffalo does go for the stud defensive guy in round one. They have to be, right? I mean, what else can happen? It’s either that or roll the dice on free agency and who knows what the heck that will look like and when it will actually begin. So, help me out fellow Rumblers. What do you think happens?
