You ruined my weekend Mr. Goodell

To me the draft was something special, an event.  A two day man-fest were I could sit back, relax and spend time with my television enjoying some NFL in April. Now it is has been watered down, distorted and warped simply to placate those few fair-weather draft watchers that only stick around for the first few rounds and at the expense of those of us that are purists, and have a love for what was.

Rewind two years ago. My wife, knowing that I am about to embark on a weekend of holding down the couch, offers to take our daughter and go for a weekend trip to visit her friend in Pennsylvania. So it will be just me, the tv, and Rumblings watching the draft.....sign me up!. Saturday morning comes and five minutes after they walk out the door I head to the store. Steak - CHECK! Nachos - CHECK! Pizza bites - CHECK! Beer - CHECK!. Houston we have lift off.

After I get home and put my goods away, off come the pants, they would stay off until Monday morning when I had to go to work.

It was a great weekend, even if I didn't agree with every pick the Bills made I still had a great time chatting it up with my fellow Rumblers. Now that is all gone. Thanks to the new draft schedule I will miss the first 3 rounds of the draft because I will be working. Yeah it is prime time for those of you who have 9-5 jobs, but those of us that work nights....well, we are S.O.L. I can no longer enjoy the draft in it's entirety. The days of my weekends holding down the coach are gone. And why is it gone? because Mr Goodell saw fit to rearrange the draft times just put it all more into "prime watching hours" I call foul. I say leave it the way it was...but maybe I am in the minority. All I know is that I used to have a weekend to myself and that is now gone....you have ruined it Mr Goodell.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I work nights as well, and it sucks. But it is a job so I deal with it. Sireric, waiting patiently for your 2011 Mock, last years was the best. Anyway, there is one positive. Last year when the Bills were making thier second round pick, I was in my car at work in the parking lot and the radio station I was listening too was just going to go to break when the Bills picked. My break was over and had to get back inside, but just before they breaked they announced the pick. Torrell Troup, thanks buddy for thinking of me, thirty seconds after the pick before and before the radio station could advertise, I got a glimpse of normaility.

Agreed

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

Goodell killed one of my favorite traditions and holidays. The same 14 guys, every weekend. Go to my buddies place and bring over the extension cords. Beautiful sunny day, pull the television outside to the yard and set that baby up.

Two of the fellas gather cash and run out to grab steaks, chicken, dogs and burgers. Fire up the grill and keep that girl ready to go all weekend long.

4 of the fellas hop in the truck and grab 3 kegs, only 14 guys but hey, we’ll need em – its a whole weekend of all day drinking and between us there are going to be a lot of upset fans looking for a beer. A lot of happy fans looking for a beer too.

While the fellas are out, set up the tv, set up the horseshoes, grab some bocce balls, everyone brings their dog (or dogs), donning team jerseys, bring out the football, draft mags everywhere.

Sigh……Im going to miss the screams of “hey Jimmy! The Giants are on the clock in round 2!” instead of the silence of when the night ends after the at pick 32.

At least no one will see me make the fool of myself when I’m upset at the Bills pick. It does get tiring watching every face turn to you when “Aaron Maybin” or “Donte Whitner” are announced and your only safe haven is looking at a fellow Bills fan and seeing that your not alone in the look of exasperation on your face.

At least we’ll have Rumblings….

yeah I’m with you, The thing that gets me the most is on Sunday, there is no more draft.
I miss sitting back on a Sunday as the picks come one after another and before you know it the Bills are picking again. Now the only think I hear about is, how the Pats moved all around the board or who the Raiders reached for or How the Panthers drafted (I’m in Charlotte) it’s an outrage.

I rec'd this as well

This is one of the dumber changes the Nfl has made recently. And as another poerson who works nights I sympathize with how hard it is to make the schedule’s match up. I have to take off thursday night, friday night and saturday night, and that really hurts me financially.(I still do it though.)

Mine is undoubtedly a unique perspective, but I like the changes – simply because I have to cover the thing, and it’s SO UNBELIEVABLY MUCH EASIER for me to keep track of what’s going on when there are two massive delays built in instead of one.

It's not about ratings

It’s about charging more for advertising dollars on a Thursday night versus a Saturday afternoon. It’s about money. You are absolutely right. Goodell sold us fans out for more bucks. He ruined a wonderful pants-less weekend and turned it into a reality show.

I renew my call here for us fans to be heard. If there is football this season, for no fan to attend any preseason game. Let them play to an empty stadium and sit in the corner and think about what they’ve done to “our game.”

I do watch, and I like the new format frankly

It was a VERY mind numbing experience years ago that went on for way too long… why not break it up… now you have more days to do just what you guys (78sack, poz et al included) like to do… now you can hang on Thurs… Fri, Sat and Sun

and the draft is still there… there are still 7 rounds (i know there used to be more) and you get all the picks and you can still watch it.
And if I disagree, I can comment… but the woe-is-me fest seems to be a bit much… HELL we don’t even have a season yet!!

by sireric on Apr 15, 2011 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This is just the same thing

that happened last year when the draft format changed (or if it was the year before, whatever) but the point that this has been retread a bit, and for so many to go off on it, I felt it was a little bit much. Granted, it is the offseason, and with CBA BS it is even worse, but nonetheless, the draft at night, spread over a couple days is very good for some of us, and I personally like it… I could be (and probably am in the minority) but it doesnt make my stance any less intelligent than I dont know, something I find very unintelligent, which is sitting around for hours on end watching ESPN overpaid commentators breakdown the same college players everyone has already investigated for the past four months… not to mention, that even once we know who s picked, and we can then decide for ourselves whether it was good or bad, still nothing will be known till there start playing, etc.
So, whatever, your draft day is gone forever… why is that so important again? It happened two years ago… its not like the change just happened, and there was probably a post about it then too…

I'm waitin'..... @killascript on twitter

Hence the title: You ruined my weekend Mr. Goodell. Not You ruined killascript’s weekend Mr Goodell.

Was there a post about t last year? Probably, I don’t really know without looking, the difference is that if affects me more this year because I work nights this year and I will miss the first 3 rounds. I did not post this to gripe about the changes in and of themselves, but to lament what was and how I will miss that.

So, whatever, your draft day is gone forever… why is that so important again?

And again, if you don’t care, or can’t remember why a post had any relevance and is unimportant to you why comment on it? Why not keep your snark to yourself?

Im sure there are plenty of BS reasons to drink beer and get fatter

I guess you miss the point. You dont watch the draft as an excuse to drink and eat. You drink and eat to celebrate the draft. You dont cherish the birth of our nation on July 4th to drink and eat, you drink and eat to celebrate the birth of our nation. Human beings have long used the joys of drinking, eating and merriment to express our inner pleasure with something in our world in a manner that could be shared with others. Hence, weddings, bachelor parties, birthdays, the Super Bowl, Thanksgiving, etc. It is one of the few great things about being a human.

The draft weekend made us happy and we chose to express and share that with others by drinking and eating and being merry in honor of it.

If you didnt like it you had every right to be a scrooge in peace. But dont try to blast those of us who will lament the loss of something that brought us immense joy.

I am one of those 9-5’ers and it is great for me. There is a whole extra day of drafting. Period. They used to do it in two days. Now, I get three. That’s a 50% increase in number of days I get to watch the NFL draft each year.

I'm just waiting for the comment...

from one of the draft TV hosts saying how much better the new draft format is. How it benefits the traditionally weaker drafting teams because they get a chance to reset their board. (Which to me speaks of they didn’t do their homework right to begin with.)

But what upsets me most is New England will be on the clock for like 19 hours at the start of the second round. Isn’t New England good enough already? Do we have to give Belicheater 19 hours to steal another 1st round pick from a weaker team next season?

i dont like the new schedule

im on the west coast and that means it starts right when i get off. which means i miss the bills pick because theres no way i make it home or anywhere for that matter before the number 3 pick is taken. goodell did ruin it, and ruined the fun of watching the first round. but then again i suppose i should get used to the league completely disregarding the entire west coast by starting a majority of the games at 10am.
