2011 Draft Strategy

I am certain that the Bills should be interested in going defense in the first round of this years draft. The talent is there at the top of this draft class to make a solid contribution to the talent level of the team overall. In my opinion going defensive line makes the most sense for a couple of reasons.

First of all if we want to maximize the talents of Kyle Williams we need to surround him with superior players. If Kyle Williams was no the only defensive linemen on the Bills that had to be game planned for in terms of blocking it would help him to make more plays on third down and help get our defense off the field which was a huge issue last year.

Second we need to take advantage of the fact that this years draft class is loaded with front seven defensive talent. Why no just grab a potential pro bowlers now when there is so many potentially great players in an area of significant need. Every draft class is different and sometimes players can seem like great prospects when compared to the rest of the draft class but not when compared to the players already in the NFL. This draft class seems to have a number of potentially great defensive players that when compared to the talent in the NFL appear to measure up.

With that said I really think that drafting Von MIller makes the most sense, for the amount of money that the third player in the draft will get in his rookie contract he had better make a significant impact on the game. This team needs an excellent group of OLB to become a formidable 3-4 defense. Von Miller would be a great piece to building that type of defense that can win championships. Games are won and lost on third down and with a significantly improved pass rush we could have a significantly improved team next. Can you imagine if Shawn Merriman and Von Miller both played at a hig level next year and Chris Kelsey could play on First and Second Down and in the 4-3 looks will we use maximizing his effectivness and not asking him to do things he obviosly can not do.

I also think that Von Miller fits the type of player that NIX looks for a Senior who has been productive over a long period of time. Some one with out major character concerns, I have read that Miller had some issues his freshman year at Texas A&M but that after that he really put himself togther and grew into a solid young man. He has no Injuries that would present any trouble for him later in his career and he plays a position where you need play makers. The difference in mkaing a tackle for aloss and a big run to the outside in the NFL is a couple of inches and with the kindof speed MIller has coupled with his ability he will make the types of plays that end drives and seal victories.

The rest of the draft can be used to try and solidify the run defense and dont dicount Troup's effrot to get bigger and stonger anf the effectiveness Carrington will have next year now that the will get much more playing time. Arthur MOats and Danny Batten in my opinion will also contribute next year to improving the teams defense and our new coach Wandstadt (mispelled) will also have an effect.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
