The Case for QB at 3
I know this may be an unpopular sentiment, but I really am starting to believe that QB is the way to go at number 3. If Chix believes there is a franchise QB avaiable(and it certainly appears that they are high on both Newton and Gabbert), then that should be the play. In support of my position consider the following:
As our braintrust stated, it is not often that you pick this high in the draft (hopefully the Bills don't pick this high again for a very long time). I understand picking a QB high does not ensure he will not be go bust (see: JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf), however it gives you the opportunity to select a QB that you confidently feel can lead you to a title and be the fact of your franchise for a decade. That is not an opportunity that comes around very often. There is always going to be risk at taking a QB this high, but the rewards is just as high if not higher. Petyon Manning, Philip Rivers, Donvan McNabb all turned their teams into perennial contenders that have a chance to win a title year in and year out. If Chix believes that either Newton or Gabbert can do the same, they almost certainly have to pull the trigger.
Another common argument against drafting a QB high is that if you "miss," you set your franchise back a number of years. Well at this point the Bills organization has been irrelevant for about 10 years. What is another three years if we miss. A number of teams have "missed" in recent years (SF: Alex Smith, SD: Ryan Leaf, CIN: Akili Smith, HOU: David Carr) all of these teams have rebounded to respectability quicker than the Bills have been able to turn things around. The Bills have missed numerous times on non QBs over th past decade and the consequences have been disastrous. Nothing could right these wrongs quicker than "hitting" on a franchise QB.
In today's NFL you need a marquee QB to win a super bowl. Over the past 15 years only 2 mediocre QB's have won a ring, Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer(who both had superb Ds). You could also include Eli Manning those the media seems to consider him an elite QB, which many don't fans don't agree with (he also had a top notch D). Right now you would be hard pressed to argue that Fitz is a top 12 QB. Sure, he gained folk hero status and brought a level of excitement to the team that it desperately craved, but the evidence that he is a big time QB just does not hold up. He has a career record of 8-14-1 and a career passer rating of 73. That is not championship QB caliber. Fitz would serve as a great QB to groom a rookie though. He is extremely intelligent and by all accounts seems to be a stellar teammate. If Chix thinks either Newton or Gabbert can be elite, a year or two of seasoning behind Fitz would certainly help.
I understand that our D needs alot of help and Miller/Peterson/Dareus would all be a boost. However adding one of these players wouldn't have the kid of franchise altering ramifications that adding a top flight QB would. Anyone of these players would immensely improve the D, but the fact is that our D needs multiple pieces to become a strong unit. Not to mention the young players such as Troup and Carrington who could potentially come on and add some teeth to the D moving forward.
I wouldn't be upset if we go D in round 1, I just feel that the future on the franchise is largely contingent upon finding the franchise QB we have been lacking since Kelly retired. By adding a QB that they think could be that future, Chix would do alot towards steering this franchise back to relevance.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

So you’re sold on Gabbert as a sure fire franchise QB? I think that’s what I will take for CHIX to select a QB at 3—complete faith in Gabbert by CHIX. Short of that the pick figures to be defense.
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

NO
I actually don’t like Gabbert all that much. How I feel about these players has no bearing on how the organization fels. What I am saying is that if Chix feels he is destined to be a franchise QB they should take him.

After a great write up
I am shocked to see you write you don’t like Gabbert at all. I’ve had my ear to the ground since our 0-4 start and Luck was still a possability about QBs coming out this year. Cam vs Gabbert is an intersting arguement but I like Gabbert and here is why: Cam dazzles athletically and looks to be a man amoung boys. NFL doesn’t have too many boys in it. I would rather have a slightly less athletic QB then one that excelled in dumbed down, one read, spread offense at Auburn. Jon Gruden’s QB camp part 1 and 2 of Cam really opened my eyes and I see the next Jamarcus Russell (biggest draft mistake ever) and at best Vince Young (0-1 in playoffs)
In Ralph we trust
perosnally i don't think either are franchise QB
but if I had to choose one – Gabbert
In Ralph we trust
BINGO!
Doesn’t mean I don’t think we need a good one. Depends on the late run in the first and beginning of the second if I would take one. Mallett NO due to his previous teams starting QB’s never amounting to anything plus drug concerns. Dalton Probably not as i am not sure he fits into the system although Gailey could shift it. Seen as a west coast Qb. Don’t know if a large shift would occur this season though as it could be a short one. Ponder think he will be gone by 34. kaep possibly if not taken earlier. Ponder or kaep would be my pick. Go Bills
I am leaning in this direction as well.
Based off the comments yesterday by Nix and Modrak. I am thinking Darius as first choice with Gabbert as second choice. Waiting to hear Chan chime in.

i got to be honest, i didnt get that impression at all. the only things im confident in saying is that theyve got 3 names in order, hat dareus is one of them, and theres at least one offensive player on that list.
i didnt sense the same sort of love fest when they were talking about either miller or gabbert, certainly not enough where im certain they are in that top 3. they could be, but im not gonna say that with any confidence.
i think gabbert or newton will get the job done, but newton just has alittle more risk, got a better chance with gabbert, i say take a QB at 3 and Defense with the rest of the picks. there will still be a great player aval in the 2nd round when we pick. with most teams taking a quearterback in the 1st or trying to trade back into the first its going to push alot of 1st round talent back into the 2nd round!
I don’t either are franchise QB’s.

That's the thing,
Do they have talent, are they conditioned and coachable and will they apply the work ethic required to become one in three years. That is the thing in this draft.

I really just can’t wait until this draft is over so we can stop speculating so much. No offense, its just that your like the 1000th person to say “the case for a QB at 3” or something to that effect. And on the other side, there’s 1000 people saying no QB at 3! Run defense! Pass rush! We have been running around in circles here for months. To QB or not to QB, that is the question. Thank God we will have an answer in a week.

I know, just get it over with jeez. Im actually more hyped to see what mid to late round guys we land since we seem to be able to find talent there in the past. Not so much with our 1st selection.
Wow
After you mentioned Carr, I looked into the 2002 nil draft…. worst QB draft ever?
