"I'm not in favor of guys getting together having seven-on-seven sessions or one-on-one drills or things like that because we're paying for our own insurance. If guys get hurt, they're left to fend for themselves. The team wouldn't be involved in any way. I'm not encouraging guys to try to have seven-on-seven practices when we don't have any trainers or doctors out there and we're liable for any injuries that occur and left footing the bill."

i figured youd respond with a comment like that, so here’s an expansion:
i wish a veteran player and established player representative with considerable sway over the actions of young teammates wouldn’t attempt to subversively curtail behavior that he, as a player rep, does not condone. I also wish he would realize by saying that the players are paying for their own insurance, that also means they are also covered by their own insurance, in the unlikely event of a serious non-contact injury several months before any possible season may begin.
there should be more players like the guys that are working out than those who would rather perform in music videos in the offseason.

Yes. George Wilson doesn’t work out in the off-season. He just waits for opportunities to portray Mary J. Blige’s lover.
If he had “considerable sway over the actions of young teammates,” Camp Fitz doesn’t happen. Right?
Wilson’s saying what he has to say as a player rep. That’s all.

Exactly how I interpreted his comment, Brian. He’s a player rep, and he has to put on a good face for the established well-being of the league’s players.

I don’t think its just saying what should be said for the sake of appearances. For us, these what these players do is a hobby. For these players, what they do is their life.
Getting hurt could very well affect the course of their lives – the difference between being able to put in a few years in the NFL and make some substantial coin that can set them up for the next 50 years, or going back to where ever they came from to make a career out of whatever non-football playing skills they have.
George Wilson’s advice was the professional, adult advice he should be giving as a leader of the players on this team, ESPECIALLY to young kids who still don’t understand the opportunity they have right now and the significance of the money they can potentially make as NFL players. 99.99999 percent of these kids will NEVER see paychecks like this for the rest of their lives, and they don’t fully realize this yet.

Isn’t this part of being a leader?

personally, a real leader probably wouldn’t be quoted in the press about it. i feel like it made it out because he’s the player rep and he has to let everyone know that that’s his position.

It made it out because he was asked. Football isn’t that conspiracy-laden, man.

He said 7 on 7. He didnt say he was against them practicing he just seems doesnt want scrimmages going on where its easy for people to get hurt.

I love ya George... but cant agree with you here.
You guys make a killing compared to the average American man. My guess is that if Stevie Johnson tripped, and broke his leg… he could afford to go to the hospital.
Plus you could get hurt doing anything, at any time. There are countless injuries in sports that have nothing to do with the players actually playing the sport. Guys trip over their dogs, sneeze wrong, get hurt carrying groceries, etc… All theyre doing is practicing their sport. Its no different than if they were at the gym, which Im sure you are…

George is spot on
I assume by what he meant with “their own insurance” is medical coverage only. They wouldn’t have any contract guarantees that they would if they suffered a season ending injury in a game or training camp.
Let’s face it, if I sit in front of my computer all day without insurance I’m not facing serious injury unless I tick off the angry IT guy that’s on his second divorce and just wrecked is second car this year (true story). If George and Stevie J get their feet tangled up on a jump ball either one of them could have a career ending injury. I’m fairly certain that Stevie J has not made enough money at this point in his career to last him until retirement.

He could… always… get another job…
Lets Go Buff a lo!!!
he chose football as his profession
He’s got every right to make sure he’s not put in a position that could jeopardize that.
If you were a surgeon but temporarily out of work would you pick up a part time job as a butcher?
Uh, yes...
If I were a professional football player and suffered a career ending injury, I would most certainly get another job. Or else I wouldnt be able to provide for me or my family…
Lets Go Buff a lo!!!
But would volunteer for an activity that would put yourself in a position where you’re more likely to suffer a career ending injury? I definitely wouldn’t.

Since when did the people in America become so weak????
As kids we’d play 7 on 7 tackle football no pads helmets nothing! Just good old fashioned fun nobody thought about well what if I get hurt who will pay for it? I still get together with my friends and play games every once in a while, nobody worries about if we get hurt do what you love and quit being such a baby. That being said I do understand Wilson is a player rep and probably just had to say this it may/may not be in fact his own beliefs.

When I was a kid, even up until college, I used to get run over continuously playing hockey and football. Give me 10 minutes and I was a good as new. Now I stub my toe on a chair and I’ll whine about it for an hour. As we get older, our ability to recover from injuries (even minor ones) is diminished.
A little bruise or scrape won’t slow these guys down but a break or even a muscle strain can be devastating.
When is the last time you heard of a break
during 7 on 7 with no pads? A muscle strain or pull is a little different but a break cmon man

Playing on a beach is one thing
playing on solid ground is a lot different.

NFL Football is not a game.
Its not pick up ball on the weekends with friends for fun. Its business. Its men getting paid real money – really, ridiculously big money – for playing a children’s game. Its an economic opportunity 99.999999 percent of these kids will NEVER EVER see again.
That’s what George Wilson’s advice is about.

They're playing 7 on 7 football
that’s what Wilson’s comments are directly towards…. 7 on 7 is no hitting, tackling, or anything of that nature basically 2 hand touch with your teammates. The chance of someone getting hurt is really close to none, maybe a sprained ankle or something at the very most extreme case.
"I promise you, ... When I come back, I'm going to be like a mad dog in a meat house." -Takeo Spikes
a sprained ankle in May could be enough to keep a guy out of training camp.
Robert Edwards tore up his knee playing football on the beach during the week leading up to the probowl. Fluke injuries happen all the time and unless you’ve got protection (injury insurance) it’s, in my opinion, simply just not worth the risk.
Beach football
is not the same as football on a field, the ground is not solid and you’re just asking to get hurt. I agree freak things do happen but playing 7 on 7 with your teammates is pretty harmless to say the least.

maybe i'm reading it differently
it seemed like he doesn’t have anything against qbs and receivers practicing routes, etc. he doesn’t want to see it taken to the next level where there’s contact drills, 7v7 or 1v1. i can understand that and agree.
Is it too much for me to ask that our potential QB of the future is athletic, accurate, and smart? Or at least two of those?
