Last night, Nix was on a radio show. They were asking him about the QBs in the draft. He said that he thought Newton and Gabbert had franchise QB potential. No surprise there. But then the hosts asked him for his thoughts on the other QBs. I don't remember Nix's exact quote, but to paraphrase he said, "Those guys are good, but are they better than Fitzpatrick? If we select a QB in the draft, we want a QB that can take the next step and be better than what Fitzpatrick is."
I completely agree with that statement. If they don't think down the road that Ponder, Mallett, Kaepernick, Dalton, etc. can be a significant upgrade from Fitzpatrick, then why waste a draft pick on them? Now, he didn't come out and say if he thought any of them could be an upgrade from Fitz, but the way he talked seemed to give the impression that he did NOT think any of them were an upgrade over Fitz. Again, could be a smokescreen so that one of them falls to us at 34, but I thought it was an interesting comment. It definitely had me thinking that they are going to look at Gabbert VERY close if they don't think any of the other QBs will be better than Fitz.
