Marcell Dareus, Chris Hairston Earn High Bills Fan Approval
One of the themes to the 2011 NFL Draft - at least here at Buffalo Rumblings - was the fact that each and every Buffalo Bills pick was so well-received by the fans that spent time with us over draft weekend. We've covered five separate drafts here, starting in 2007 with the likes of Marshawn Lynch and Trent Edwards, and this is by far the best mood we've seen Bills fans in after a draft.
Even the least popular picks this weekend - which, unsurprisingly (and perhaps unfairly), were the three defensive backs - had approval from at least three out of every five Bills fans. Meanwhile, you'll be hard-pressed to find a draft pick that's ever been as universally accepted as Marcell Dareus was. After the jump, you'll find all nine Bills draft picks ranked by approval rating from over the weekend - with fourth-round pick Chris Hairston making a surprise stop at No. 2 overall.

Wondering if
We should do a pre season poll on Eric Pears followed by a mid season poll and an end of the season poll. I like the Hariston Pick, the guy could be a great addition from a swing tackle perspective and push Pears at RT, I realize this, but what I don’t realize is that Pears has no support around here except from Buddy and Chan. Those guys must not know what they are talking about.

hey Brian have you done this kind of a post before on previous drafts?

Hairston was an approval of position more than selection. Cool numbers nonetheless.
You can't have CHANGE without CHAN.

I gotta agree with you.
But the fact that he was the strongest OT in the draft… thats a pretty good thing to have. Plus his measureables are pretty darn good.
Still very surprised that the DB’s were so low on the approval. I would say majority of people on this board want Whitner gone, we drafted a SS and his approval wasnt very high, that shocked me.
Lets Go Buff a lo!!!
I think a lot of people didn’t approve the Searcy pick because they might have initially thought he was another CB and not a Safety.

Draft thoughts...
Please don’t take this the wrong way, for I’m very happy who and how we drafted. [I’m not worry about getting a QB when we are ready]. It did get me thinking, however, that we tend to get very high on our Draft picks and predict rosy projections and nicknames [which is fun].
Anyway, highlights of Doctor Dare made me think of Terrence Cody, the NT out of Alabama, that many folks wanted us to draft instead of Troup in 2010. So for grins and giggles, I looked him up on Wikipedia.
Cody signed a four-year, $3.385 million maximum value contract with the Ravens on July 26, 2010 In training camp at McDaniel College, Cody—along with veteran cornerback Walt Harris—failed his conditioning test for the Ravens, and was thus placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He eventually passed the conditioning test on his third try, allowing him to go to training camp for the Ravens
In his unofficial NFL debut, a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, Cody had a solid performance, finishing with five tackles (four solo). His most impressive play came in the first half, when he tackled DeAngelo Williams with one arm for a loss while holding off Panthers center Ryan Kalil with the other.
On November 21, he made his first official start, debuting against the Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium. Unlike his preseason performance, he was criticized for his poor performance from fans and head coach John Harbaugh.
During a play, the Panthers offensive lineman pushed Cody out of the way, allowing Mike Goodson to have a 45-yard run. Cody finished the game without any tackles, as the Ravens defense allowed 120 rushing yards.
This, at least to me, is a sobering reminder that the Draft is the Draft, preseason is preseason and our favorite football team is still going to be ‘who they are’ as indicated by their Regular Season [and hopefully in the near future] Post Season records.

Too early
I loved Mount Cody last year and would’ve been happy if the Bills took him so I hear you. He may still turn out to be a better player than Troup but I think it is way too early to make that call and it doesn’t look good so far. I think the point is that there were no picks that made the fan base scream in horror. It is easy to see a valuable role for every pick even if their biggest impact is on special teams.
That might not apply to Jasper though. Its just a good story and fun to envision what they could do with such an enormous human being. He’s a lottery ticket and the winning numbers won’t be revealed for a while.
I’m surprised that the selection of Sheppard didn’t get a higher approval score. He is going to be a mainstay of our defense for years, while the four guys who came in above him in the poll (Hairston, Jasper, and the two Whites) are likely to be no more than back-ups — although Hairston and Johnny White could be very good back-ups.
this is one reason why I like the draft so much.
We got some starters, and we got some depth. I have always viewed depth as a huge weakness. I also agree with you Mack that there were other options at most of our selections that are agueably better choices, but I like the fact that we focused so much on the bigger weakness of all and that is being defense. Those other options we passed on could remain or we could address them through FA when it begins. Hopefully, it will be pass rush, or tackle or TE depth. We need a stronger running game to compliment this offense.

are you really surprised, though?
a blocking sled, drafted to play OT, would have about the same results
Shep is the 6th most approved pick
and he may be a captain on the D very soon (next year)
that’s why these gut reaction polls won’t mean anything. They measure instant reaction
Quite right. I focus less on the names and more on the positions as you go down the list. Which is why I was most surprised by Johnny White.

Understood, but pehaps a few Rumblers like me see some Thurmal similiarities in Johnny White ;)

Pump your brakes
you’re comparing a hall of famer to a rookie who hasn’t played a down. I like what I see in Johnny White.
