Report: Bills Will Focus On Re-Signing Talent When Lockout Ends
In case you missed it in Web Rumblings earlier this week, I wanted to re-visit a report from Pat Moran at Buffalo Sports Daily. Per Moran, who spoke with a source, the Buffalo Bills have their priorities set once free agency begins, and Paul Posluszny is at the top of their list.
The report goes on to indicate that Posluszny will likely get an offer from the Bills easily in excess of the four-year, $24 million extension Chris Kelsay got last year - if, of course, he's an unrestricted free agent under whatever new collective bargaining agreement is agreed to. And, of course, the backup quarterback position is brought up.
All of that has been speculated about for months. The part of the report that I found most intriguing, and that I hope comes to pass, is the idea that GM Buddy Nix will use the free agent signing period not to import new talent, but to extend existing talent.
After the jump, take a look at the number of players with expiring contracts in the next two years. Lots of prominent names on this list, folks.

I completely agree
with the Nix statement of not being active in free agency. This team needs to concentrate on buiding a core group of players, getting better, and building through the draft. The timing to add components through free agency isn’t now.

Question
Isn’t every team building through the draft as well? Why can’t we secure talent via FA and still build core? Seems like we could speed up the 10 plus yr re-build were on. Not buying the wait and draft approach to sucessfully achieving a winning team. Hard to get excited by who were gonna overpay to stay a Bill on a team lacking so much talent in first place.
A QB is like a King in chess, if you don't have one you lose! Get a QB Buffalo!

not everyteam builds via draft the skins dont
IMO free agency is meant for depth and 1 or 2 pieces to the puzzle

agreed.
free agency is always meant for depth or short term replacements. think about all the great players, they were drafted high – or high rounds – and they’ve been with one team for a really long time. longetivity proves 2 things: 1: experience in a system and 2: veteran presence to let rookies and free agents know that there’s leadership already in place.
of course the bills have made some very bad calls when it comes to picking up, not even great, but not even good players at the top. i can name the last few years of players that have been really bad: maybin?, hardy, ellis, lynch, edwards, mcargo, youboty, simpson. and then you consider all the FA that failed, yes, that’s why the bills are at where they’re at.
To buffalobacker
the 10 year rebuilding we’ve been in has nothing to do with Nix’s philosophy. You’ll always be in rebuild mode if you draft terribly and don’t develop players, always. So it has to start with getting your front office squared away with great leadership and then have him hire people with the ability to do their jobs. Nix is that leader and even better he’s grooming his replacement.
And yes you are correct every team is building through the draft. If you’ll indulge me, I’ll use fantasy football as an analogy. You draft your team, then you make trades later in the year to strengthen it. The trick is to not do it too soon and give up on a player, etc. But the guy that drafts the best wins every year. It’s the guy that has his 4th round pick explode that wins.
Same in real football. The teams that draft the best win. The only caveat to this theory is you MUST find your franshise QB. If the Bills keep up with the build through the draft, sign free agents for depth, and they find they’re franchise QB, then and only then will they become a perennial playoff team. I personally feel that we are in the build through the draft part of this process and therefore think it’s the wrong time to sign big ticket free agents.

Agree but........
Keep in mind almost all of these players were brought in by the old regime. If there are a few guys that are demanding high contracts but CHIX don’t believe they are worth the money they will look elsewhere and let them walk.
I think the next few years will tell us if Buffalo is serious about becoming contenders once again. If they treat some of these players like Jabari Greer or Jason Peters and refuse to give them the big contracts they (arguably) deserved, than it will be a long time till they get back
If a free agent is good at football and will improve your team,
you should try to sign them.

Well — there goes my dream of the Bills getting Osi Umenyiora. :)
Oh well, let me make this easier:
Expiring contracts after the 2011 season
CB Reggie Corner — you’re here only until Williams is ready, or if McGee gets hurt again. After that, BUHBYE.
ILB Andra Davis — you’re here only if the Bills can’t resign Poz, or until Sheppard’s ready
ILB Reggie Torbor — see Davis
K Rian Lindell — you’re safe, but you’d better improve from 50+ yards, or some younger competition will be brought in
OG Chad Rinehart — you’ll have to beat out the guy listed below in order to get resigned
OG Kraig Urbik — see Rinehart
OT Demetrius Bell — you’re safe — as much as some people want you gone
OT Erik Pears — only if you can hold off Wrotto, Howard, Hairston, etc.
QB Ryan Fitzpatrick — throw for so much as one yard over last year’s total, and you should be a lock
SS Bryan Scott — don’t worry; they’ll be a spot for you {especially after Whitner is sent packing}
TE David Martin — just block and stay healthy {don’t worry about catching the ball}, and you should please Chan Gailey
WR Felton Huggins — first, you can’t get off special teams. Second, you can’t stay healthy, Third, there’s a big crowd at WR ahead of you. Equals BUHBYE.
WR Stevie Johnson — do we even need to ask?
WR Roscoe Parrish — too small, not enough production over the years, Bills want to get bigger at WR. BUHBYE.
Expiring contracts after the 2012 season
C Geoff Hangartner — you’re OK if you hold off Wood, whom people seem determined to put at C
CB Leodis McKelvin — you’re OK if you can get your head out of your rear {or if the Bills don’t bring back Flo}
DE Spencer Johnson — you’re fate was sealed the moment Dareus’ name was called
FB Corey McIntyre — if the Bills can find an upgrade, they should
FS Jairus Byrd — safe. You and Wilson/Searcy will be the safeties of the present/future
DT Kyle Williams — um, you were the Bills only Pro Bowler last season. That should end any discussion
OG Andy Levitre — you, Wood, and Bell are the centerpieces the OL will be built around for the next decade
OLB Shawne Merriman — want a long-term deal? Stay healthy, off the ‘roids, and productive. If you can’t do any of those, Moats/Coleman will be more than happy for a shot
OT Mansfield Wrotto — you’ll have to hold off about five different people on the right side; if you can do that, you deserve to get re-signed
P Brian Moorman — like Lindell above, you’re not booming long distance like you used to. You can stay, but some younger competition needs to be brought in
RB Fred Jackson — that’s like asking if Steve J or Kyle should be reigned
SS Jon Corto — you may get kept, but only for ST’s. But hey, you wouldn’t be the first
TE Shawn Nelson — too small, can’t get on the field, can’t stay on the field, blocking is a weakness. BUHBYE.
WR Lee Evans — JP’s not around any more, and Fitz has his own favorite. BUHBYE
WR Donald Jones — you’ll be around, even if it’s only as PR
WR David Nelson — if you can push out Parrish for the slot, or even Evans/Easley for the outside, you have a home
theres no way roscoe walks

Actually
I wouldn’t call these names all that prominent, (unless your diehard…like you blog about this every day or something;) I’d just say there’s A LOT of names. Not really a fan of Pez, uh, Poz. Gets hurt too much, and I’m not sure our center will be “Hanging” around with Wood on the scene. (wow, that was bad)

Disagree hard on the Roscoe comment. If anything it was the Jauron regime that wanted to get bigger at WR, not CHIX. Roscoe became a much larger part of their offense than he has ever been and all the reports are showing that he will become an even bigger contributer if healthy this season. IMO the future receiving corps of the Bills are: Stevie Johnson and Marcus Easley at X and Z, Roscoe as the primary slot receiver and David Nelson as the utility receiver who spells everyone and is slot in 4 WR sets. I think Evans will be a professional and understand the youth movement when his time comes but it makes it even better for Easley as there is no pressure to contribute immediately.
Also, I think both Rinehart and Urbik stay around as quality guard depth, and I think one will even be starting at guard once Wood takes over at center full time. While I do find myself contradicting a lot of the moves Buffalo makes, I also think that you should NEVER underestimate the value of lineman depth!

“If anything it was the Jauron regime that wanted to get bigger at WR, not CHIX.”
That’s funny; I had no idea it was the Jauron regime that drafted Easley {6-2, 207}, and signed UDFA’s Jones {6-0, 214}, Nelson {6-5, 217}, and Roosevelt {6-0, 189} — though I will give them credit for getting Stevie J in the 7th round; that makes up for them not doing their homework on James Hardy.
“Roscoe became a much larger part of their offense than he has ever been and all the reports are showing that he will become an even bigger contributer if healthy this season.”
The key words are “if healthy”. It was his own lack of size that contributed to the injury that placed him on IR.
Plus, it’s kinda sad that a 29 year old veteran in the league for six years’ largest contribution is 400 yards and two TD’s.
.
In fairness to that regime, virtually every WR not named DeSean Jackson failed from Hardy’s class. Sure, Jordy Nelson might make something of himself, but the remainder…suspect at best.

no, no, and no
i think ur way off base on a lot of these. whether its giving guys far too little credit (parrish, d. nelson, reggie corner, s. johnson, hangartner, mcintyre), or giving guys too much credit (scott, martin, jones, lindell, moorman)
and ive got no idea how the hell u come off saying shawn nelson is “too small”. the guys 6’5 and plays around 250. hes huge. health is a legit concern but talent and size certainly shouldnt be
and for some reason the whole ‘BUHBYE’ thing irritated me…
and ive got no idea how the hell u come off saying shawn nelson is "too small". the guys 6’5 and plays around 250. hes huge.
Well, it could be due to the fact that, per the official roster, he’s 240, not 250 . . .
http://www.buffalobills.com/team/roster/Shawn-Nelson/0c51fa9f-d07c-4d8c-9d26-00298d65f3a1
That’s not “huge”. Huge would be TE’s David Martin {265 lbs} and Scott Chandler {272}.
Add the fact that Nelson was suspended the first four games this past year due to toking up, and lasted only five games before going on IR — again — and Nelson is looking less the next Keith McKeller, and more the next Derek Schouman . . .
and for some reason the whole ‘BUHBYE’ thing irritated me…
Sorry you find that offensive — I feel that’s the only appropriate response to players up for FAcy who simply take up roster space . . .
.
I sure hope we sign our FA's
I cant see any reason why we could not still sign 2-3 more guys in FA. RT, #2 QB, TE, and OLB are all positions that could be addresed without breaking the bank.
Please base your arguments in provable facts instead of pulling stuff out of your rear. -CanadianBillsFan- This is why talk is cheap because the supply always exceeds the demand.
Off subject
I just thought of how to fix the OL. Find a left handed QB and move Wood to right tackle;)

Sign Kyle Williams' extension now!
don’t even think about letting this guy hit the free agent market – we need to pay him what it takes for him to retire a Buffalo Bill.

free agents
I too would love a matt Roth, Zack miller, or Mathias kiwamka but these guys wont come here. Locking up the young talent is something buffalo ignored for a decade and poz is the start of it. Then lock up stevie, wood, levitre, bell and kyle
