32 Million Reasons
I was scouting here for our Week One matchup and couldn't help but notice the Cap money to be spent. The Chiefs have about that much to spend too. We played a tight game in 2011 that was sealed by our top 5 pick Eric Berry with an interception. As a lifelong Chiefs fan I remember all to well the AFC playoff loss and how you all stood in our way in the 90's. I did get to attend the in-season spanking we all gave you on MNF though so.....
What's it going to be like this season?
What area is the team’s biggest need to upgrade?
Khaled: They need to be less reliant on Williams for their pass rush. Chris Kelsay struggled rushing from two or three point stances, and it’s asking a lot of Arthur Moats to build upon an encouraging but hardly amazing rookie year. They need some proven pass rush whatever front they end up in.
Sam: As much as they need pass rush, they can survive there. No, what they really need is some better blocking. Fred Jackson is very solid and their offense has some other legitimate skill players. That will all go to waste unless they improve their blocking and protection.
Do you agree with either of these assessments? Do you agree with either of their solutions? Link
How do they upgrade that area?
Khaled: Simple. They go out and make Matt Roth a highly paid man. He’s an extremely talented and complete outside linebacker. They’ll need to manage his snaps, but he’s better than anything they have on the roster (especially since it looks like they’re going to persist with plenty of 3-4 looks).
Sam: There is no shortage of quality offensive linemen potentially available, which is handy for Buffalo, because they could stand to upgrade almost every spot across their line. Jared Gaither and Doug Free would both make some sense, with Free in particular allowing them a bit of flexibility, but I think they should focus on Marshal Yanda. Yanda’s been successful at both RT and RG and would allow the Bills to focus on identifying players they feel can succeed on that line long-term.
Now more to the point of my post. What would you want to strengthen on your team if we were again playing in the AFC Championship game in 2011? In our game last year Jamaal Charles ran crazy for 177 yards and Thomas Jones rushed for 77. Matt Cassel threw for 152 yards, with Charles picking up 61 more receiving. You all held our wide receivers to 4 catches for 21 yards but Dwayne Bowe did gather in a TD. Only one of his league leading Touchdown catches last season.
The Bills shut down the Chiefs WR's and also kept the Chiefs Rushing game in check to the Outside. The Chiefs rushed for 143 yards between the Tackles. Dwan Edwards, Kyle Williams, Paul Posluszny, and Donte Whitner and the CB's had good games. Marcus Stroud, Chris Kelsay, and Reggie Torbor did not. If you are transitioning to the 3-4 eventually this year Is Marcell Darius the answer to stopping the run up the middle?
1 - Marcell Dareus, DE, Alabama (6-3, 319); 2- Aaron Williams, CB, Texas (6-0, 204); 3- Kelvin Sheppard, ILB, LSU (6-2, 250); 4 - Da'Norris Searcy, S, North Carolina (5-11, 223); 4 - Chris Hairston, OT, Clemson (6-6, 326); 5 - Johnny White, RB, North Carolina (5-10, 209); 6 - Chris White, ILB, Mississippi State (6-3, 240); 7 - Justin Rogers, CB, Richmond (6-0, 180); 7 - Michael Jasper, NT, Bethel-Tennessee (6-4, 394)
What are the possibilities that 32 Million dollars of cap allow? Should and will you address the Offensive line with some veteran help? Some additional WR's to help Steve Johnson and Jordy Nelson (David Nelson). Fitzpatrick threw 10 Interceptions trying to get the ball to Johnson and though catching 10 TD's he dropped 13 passes. The Chiefs have 32 Million dollars to upgrade with also. Any thoughts on what they should do?
Lotsa Questions.
Looking forward to Football and opening day :)
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Another Question
I consider the Bills and Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas, etc an NFL Dynasty. Four consecutive AFC Championships should merit that. Is that a valid view for Bills fans?

Seen a lot of you on your home site & here on occasion. I even used a post from you as my sig for a few weeks, I think back in Feb.
If you have read any of the 487 articles over the past several months a few things should be clear in Rumblers views.
- Our O-Line is weakest on the right side. I believe we had 6 guys in the RT spot alone.
- Marcus Stroud was dumped & Marcel Dareus drafted to replace him. Should be an upgrade at that spot.
- We hope Merriman shows some of what he had a few years ago, but are at best cautiously optimistic. Our LB crew in general is a big ?_? at all positions.
- DBs are a mixed bag. McGee had surgery to correct a nerve problem in his back. Reports are that this problem is fixed. McKelvin erratic play, Florence is a FA. Youboty & Corner are at best capable of some nickel corner. Drafted 2 CBs and a SS. Whitner may/may not be back. Byrd is solid at FS.
- WRs seem to be a strength. Didn’t draft any.
- RB Jackson is underrated in the league. Spiller needs to continue to grow and get better at his major weaknesses. Drafted RB White from UNC for possible GL/3rd downs
- TE – we don’t have any. We actually have 4 but they are just extensions of the O-Line. Combined the position might have had 20 receptions. Gailey does love his 4-wide offense though, but you knew him from his KC days.
- And then there is the QB. Fitzpatrick is the current starter. The only other QB is Levi Brown, currently a project.
As for solutions, well opinions vary. If the Bills pursue a RT in FA, lots of opinions on who would be best. There are a few guys that seem to be an upgrade over what we have. I am not very impressed with the FA LBs. Most are on the downside or flash-in-the-pan. Many sites list Bills LB Poszlusny as the best available. As best we can tell the Bills will re-sign him unless someone offered him $8M/YR or some nutty number.
My FA view: Re-sign Poz, need a capable 2nd QB, Top-Flight RT, a CB that at minimum plays nickel well with solid NR 2 ability (either re-sign Florence or equivalent/better), maybe a receiving TE, and an UDFA QB.
Hope this helps.
.
Year two is upon us.

32 million is a lot of money to get things straightened out with
at least 10 teams are going to be letting some decent talent go or very minumum not able to resign their own Free Agents. Is it possible an upgrade in the coaching ranks, not Chan but in the position coaches would help the youngsters progress easier. I do think the coaching on the Chiefs was a long term hindrance in making anything of all the talent we drafted.
Many of the guys we had, after moving on had long carreers elsewhere, that points to coaching and talent aquisition. The 2011 draft looks like it hit the defensive spots that needed addressing. Some quality UDFA’s and some quality FA’s using that 32 Million dollar war chest should move you all up, while some of the perenial Play-off teams come back to earth, so to speak.

Good post....and if the Bills are going to improve vs the run, don't overlook Troup
He is coming came on late last season has has bulked up this offseason. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Troup get more time at NT, especially when the Bills are in a true 3-4 set.

He will be a great depth player to have on the team after a year on the practice squad.
Unless he blows it up at camp.

Tough to tell right now
Kids appears to be very athletic and willing to work, but is very technically raw and doesn’t have much experience playing NT. Most seem to think he needs at least one year on the PS to develop enough to have any sort of shot at making a team’s 53 man roster.

Would love to see him being used on goalline situations at least …I hope he shows something in camp because I’d be nervous putting him on PS.

I don’t know how much of that would be up to him anyways, if the rules remain the same. If another team picks him up off our PS, the Bills have a chance to make him the same offer and then he can choose, but for the Bills to make that offer, they have to find him a slot on the 53 man roster for four or five weeks. Of course, the Bills could do like they did D Bell, and keep him on the 53 man roster, but inactive on gamedays.
Yes
But most everyone thinks were good to go with Bell. :(

Steve Chiefs.... I just puked in my mouth thinking about that game .........
Utter discrace. Ran over like a train. Disgusting.
That’s why we drafted who we did at #3 and our young LBs will step up (hopefully).
TI still don’t get why folks think Gaither is a good addition.
He is lazy, injury prone, and wants big money.
After he gets big money, he will still be lazy and injury prone. Ozzie doesn’t want him. What does that tell you?
By the way, I cringe everytime the Bills go to KC. Even in our glory years we often got spanked there. That place is not a good site for the Bills to play. Not sure why.
Just my memories.

When Chan was brought in how much of the coaching staff was replaced?
Nix is the GM, is he doing a good job for length of time he has been there?
Carl Peterson was awesome when he arrived in 1990’ish and brought in Marty Schottenheimer, then the years rolled by and things were okay but not moving forward in a consistent fashion. Companies sometimes do that too. Pioli has brought a new spirit to the GM position and Haley is Unique to say the least.
New Coaches
Almost all of them. I can only think of our OLB coach, secondary coach and maybe another one or two. Everyone else brought in is new to the organization. Main goal is to teach along with coach which means we will rebuild through the draft. For the most part we are all fond of our draft choices the last two years since nix took over but in reality there hasn’t been a whole lot of contribution. Reports are favorable, but results are slow in coming. We picked up a handful of FA last year. Most noteworthy are Andra Davis and Dwan Edwards, Also, Reggie Torbor and Akin Ayeodele. Biggest hurdle besides solidifying our O-Line is our efforts to switch to a base 3-4 defense. It has been a focus of our last two drafts, but the personell and experience level is killing us, we are growing slow but sure, we will play anyone anytime. Love the progress the Chiefs are making, always a formidable opponent.
YOU ARE OUT of you kuku fufu mine craker laker Flaber baber FUNKI chunki brain. WE want to winn every year -- abayarde
Awesome
Teams like us that don’t have that OMG QB really need to get an edge with great coaching and leadership.
Those Defensive Lineman are hard to draft and get great play imediately. Glenn Dorsey finally turned it up in his 3rd year and we are hoping Tyson Jackson finds himself this year.

Steve_Chiefs, one coaching addition to the Bills that has already been made was hiring Dave Wannstedt as the LB coach and Asst Head Coach. Many Bills fans think that will be very helpful to the LB corps.

That is a great hire
back in the 90’s we had Cowher as the Defensive coordinator, definitely some great Defensive minds help. I guess with your youngish LB crew this is going to be a good hire.

Along with most, I think the holes most likely to be (potentially) filled in FA will be along the offensive line. If the Bills could add some depth and a player to compete for the starting RT spot, I think FA will be a success.
The Rumblings staff recently ran a four part series about getting to the cap floor and I believe that they won’t be too busy in FA, focusing more on resigning their own players and getting others long term extensions.
What holes does KC have to fill? It seems like they’re set at QB, RB, TE but how about WR and the line? If Hali a free agent? What about along the Dline?
"It’s like I’ve always said, don’t tell me about the labor pains, just show me the baby."
- Buddy Nix
"How can a guy with a name like Melo be such a pain in the ass?"

We are hoping for a certain FA NT from San Francisco
and a Slot WR would be another wish
As far as our O-line we have One Tackle under contract and the other is a RFA, we will be getting someone to fill out the position group. It is looking like we will have Waters and Weigmann for at least another season.
Back to Jasper, the Chiefs picked Anthony Toribio from the Packers last year as a NT prospect
and signed him to a two year deal. I would be real carefull exposing Jasper to the Practice Squad :)
by Steve_Chiefs on Jul 23, 2011 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I am more optimistic that Jasper makes the roster only because I saw how the Bills kept Demetrius Bell. But until anyone sees him play, it’s tough to say.

A near 400 lb man can squat anywhere :)
We took Jerrel Powe in the late 6th round, so the NT’s might have got pushed down in the draft. With the way the lockout was progressing I assume that most teams wanted to address needs with draft picks, rather than hoping on UDFA talent

Khaled: They need to be less reliant on Williams for their pass rush.
Right or wrong Nix is pinning Buffalo’s hopes largely on Shawn Merriman. Kelsay is known by some as KOTAS—King Of The Almost Sack. There’s no telling why Nix gave Kelsay a fat contract extension. Bills fans are hoping that Nix’s judgment is better in the Merriman case.
No, what they really need is some better blocking
Right tackle was a revolving door last season, both in terms of the players and quality of play. Bell wasn’t anything special at LT but the interior line is a strength of the team. Bell will start at LT and hopefully will continue to improve. If Buffalo can get a consistent starting quality RT the line will be at least reasonable. If the Bills go after any linemen in free agency look for Nix to target a dedicated RT….but even that is only a maybe as Nix appeared to like a couple of the guys who played RT last season. If Mansfield Wrotto is starting Chiefs fans should be delighted.
The Bills shut down the Chiefs WR’s and also kept the Chiefs Rushing game in check to the Outside.
Did the Bills shut down the WRs or were the WRs not particularly necessary except for keeping the defense honest? As for keeping the Chiefs from running to the outside, I think that was a case of Buffalo picking their poison and scheming to stop those runs….which allowed gaping holes to open in the middle of the defense.
Marcus Stroud, Chris Kelsay, and Reggie Torbor did not.
Stroud is gone and there’s a chance that Torbor either won’t be on the team or won’t be on the field if he is on the team. Much to the chagrin of Bills fans, Kelsay will likely be on the field when the Bills play KC. If Todd Haley is any sort of coach he’ll game plan for Kelsay by sending the RB out to Kelsay’s flat…..guaranteed first down every time.
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.
In a 10-10 OT game I hope we both were throwing every possible way to win at each other.
