Donte Whitner Poll
I've been in full-on hermit mode the past week and have been reading just about everything I can about the goings-on in free agency. Being football deprived tends to do that to me. With all that I've read I can't recall seeing any article that attached Donte Whitner's name to, well, anyone. While the majority of us (if not everyone) believe that Whitner isn't worth the contract he's seeking, I am curious to see what people think about the possiblity of Buffalo re-signing him. Put aside the thought of contract terms and instead assume that CHIX and Whitner can work out a deal. Would you be open to Whitner's return? Would his return be a positive (consistency, reasonable level of play) or a detriment (not elite, keep other players from developing)? Can you see yourself rooting for him if he donned the spiffy new duds? Or has he poisoned the well with his comments and attitude?
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Yes
What message is being sent by clubs that haven’t looked his way. Obviously, it seems they don’t feel he falls into the elite category, I believe Nix sent that message too. Could be still be holding out for his demands? It is becoming very curious to why there hasn’t been any news of note on Donte.

My guess is that he’s told his agent only to forward offers that meet some minimum amount of guaranteed money…..and that no offers have met those terms. Maybe he’s waiting until some team has a SS injury in training camp and feels that it must overpay to fill the need.
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

ive been thinking about this too… it seems as though no teams gonna be giving him the money he thinks hes worth, otherwise hed be on a team already.
im curious if thats changed his attitude or expectations at all
Once you get beyond Troy Polamalu, the quality of players drop dramatically. And being that, it might be that teams don’t value the SS position as highly as other areas of defense. Sure, you got a Polamalu, you got a major talent at SS. How many players aside from him are playmakers? How many are at his level, and how many are more like Whitner?
It may just be that SS isn’t such a strong need for teams to pursue at the beginning of free agency.

Good athlete.
Bad player.
LOL @ CleanCoalEnergyAds. Even after wiping off the blood of West Virginians (Massey Energy [multiple times], anyone?), it still pollutes our country and is terrible for both the environment and public health.

I hadn’t seen any of those. I think that you’re right in that Belicheat would get the most out of Whitner. Not only that, he’d be playing behind a better front 7 than he’s ever had.

C’mon. That bleacher report article was basing everything on the fact that he was a top first-rounder and his tackle stats. They know nothing about him as a player. It was also written back on July 7.

Whitner to Pats?
Wouldn’t that really suck? Donte goes to Pats, plays behind a talented front seven coached by Belechick (whether you like him or not, a GREAT defensive mind), and fulfills
the potential someone here saw when they drafted him so high. UGH!
If losing him allowed for the Bills’ defense to improve, it wouldn’t be a bad thing at all. The question is how and if it improves without him.
The Patrtiots are SB winners on paper so far this season. Let’s see how it all shakes out.

As a Bills fan, I would like to see him back here. We are a better team with him than without him.
That said, I don’t want him back. The guy really needs a fresh start. Leave all the baggage behind in Buffalo and start somewhere new where he can develop himself as a man and person. That can’t happen in Buffalo.

Wow, that article you linked was really well-written and spot on

That is easily one of Pinzone's best articles.
Well done, and a good explanation of why Donte won’t be back with the Bills for any price, no matter how low the contract.

I voted Yes but with lots of conditions!
And most people around here know how critical of him I’ve been over the past few years. Fact is he is nowhere near as good as he thinks he is and he never lived up to his draft position. His stats are horrible. I do believe that he’s worth re-signing at the proper price. He definitely does not deserve the starting role and would need to earn his playing time. I think that the added competition is maybe what is needed to get him going, otherwise he is great depth. If the goal is to give him starting money and the keys to the car – then let him walk!

Happy for him to be back
However, not at elite money – think 3 – 3.5 per year on his deal. He’s worth that much as a solid player. Beyond that price, thanks for your time and lets spend the money elsewhere.

What's that saying about eating crackers in bed?
Yeah, sure. Bring him back if no one else is willing to make him a baller. If not, the team has lost far greater contributors at far more important positions. Tackles may come in spades for him, but how many of them are meaningful? I expect the organization has and will continue to dissect his tenure with the team to find out just how well he fits into their future plans.

No problem with signing Whitner
Voted yes…
I have no problem with Whitner coming back but at the right price, he is not a $6 million a year player but my guess is that his worth would be between 2 & 3 million with incentives to earn more.
