53-Man Final Roster (Projected)

Fitz, Thigpen, Smith (3)

Jackson, Spiller, White, McIntyre (4)

Evans, Johnson, Parrish, Nelson, Easley, Jones (6)

Chandler, Nelson (2)

Bell, Wang, Pears, Hairston, Levitre, Hangartner, Wood, Urbik, Wrotto (9)

Dareus, Williams, Troup, Carrington, Edwards, Jasper (6)

Merriman, Kelsay, Moats, Batten, Coleman (5)

Sheppard, Barnett, Davis, Torbor, White (5)

McGee, McKelvin, Williams, Florence, Corner, Rogers (6)

Searcy, Byrd, Wilson, Scott (4)

Lindell, Moorman, Sanborn (3)

I could see Pianalto making the team if the Bills want to go with 3 TE's and cutting someone like Justin Rogers, Chris White, or Antonio Coleman to make room. I could see Sidney Glover making the team over Jon Corto for the 5th S spot over Rogers, White, Coleman but I think Williams could go back there in a pinch if need be so I see them staying at 4. Easley is a possible roster cut if he doesn't get his knee healthy and get in some pre-season games. I see them staying with 5 WR's if that is the case.

  • Best chances for UDFA to make team:
  • Zach Pianalto - TE
  • Sidney Glover - S

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Why did you give the nod to Jasper? Do you think that he’ll be pro ready this season? Or is it because you think that other teams would poach him from our practice squad? (which I think is a real possibility)

he will make the 53 man squad

he is a hard worker and a heck of a athlete

I think the Bills love him. They gave him goals in order to draft him and he achieved them. I think he will get plucked off the PS if he is put there.

I can’t see Spencer Johnson getting cut. Stranger things have happened, but I think he is too valuable.

This.

That only gives us 3 DE’s. Obivuosly they can mix and match KWilliams outside or whatever… but I would still think they would go with 4 roster-DE’s and 2 NT’s.

food for thought

What about 3 NT’s and 9 Lbs? This projection (Which is probably pretty darn close) has 10 Linebackers.

yup – no way he gets cut

I think this may be another case where Bills fans (or at least myself) don’t really understand fully the roles in a 3-4.

My sense of it is that the DE’s in a 3-4 are really more like DT’s. In other words, while Troup or Jasper might only make sense in the NT position, guys like Williams and Dareus are perfect DE’s for a 3-4 (though they’re not even close to what one would view as a prototypical NFL DE). The traditional fleet-footed rushing role of DE in the 4-3 gets more absorbed by the OLB’s.

Wouldn’t that make a DL set with Jasper but without Johnson seem totally plausible? Unless we’re still doing tons of 4-3 looks, that’s how it seems to me.

by Munchausen on Aug 1, 2011 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand the roles – but Johnson is great depth with Carrington while Jasper is practice squad bound. I’m not sure why he gets the love that he does other than his size and athletic ability – he’s got a ton to learn before he’ll contribute.

If the argument is just that Johnson is a flat out better player than Jasper, then I get the logic.

I guess it also makes sense to me if they’re really wanting to play lots of Meatball at NT, because then Troup is the obvious 2nd NT and you’d rather have a 4th DE (Dareus, Edwards, Carrington, Johnson) than a 3rd NT. And as I said before Johnson>Jasper for more 4-3 type sets.

All that said, I still want to see me some Jasper hulking around at NT, and I hope that happens.

by Munchausen on Aug 1, 2011 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

yes – it’s more that Johnson is the better player – Jasper has loads of upside but that won’t be realized until at least next year.

other than that you’re spot on

Understandable

I know, that is why I noted that he would probably stay, but just wasn’t sure if we would take that many people. I can see us mixing and matching, etc. but you are probably right. I guess I just like Jasper and think he needs to stay to avoid getting plucked off the PS.

Im not sure that we'll keep 9 OL tho.

So maybe Wrotto gets the ax? Also I wouldnt be shocked if Torbor gets cut. Thats all based on Chris White being a good player. I know the coaching staff loves Torbor, and recently said he couls start. But with Davis, Barnett, Shepp and hopefully White, Torbor is a little expendable… him or Coleman on the outside.

Maybin?

Assuming this means you think he’s getting cut… but surprised you didn’t mention him at all.

by TrufflePig on Aug 1, 2011 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah

Maybin as a Bill is not even in my mind anymore. He is awful, down to like 220, I wish they would cut him today. Just doesn’t even deserve a spot on the notable cut list, cant wait for this disaster to be over. We could have had Orakpo or Oher (ugh)

i think

he will have all the chances to succeed this in pre-season. He’s training in the second team and if he can play well in pre-season he will stay. Cut coleman for him.

by Fernando brazil on Aug 1, 2011 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Pretty solid list

Couple thoughts:
We are deep at WR. You show Roosevelt getting cut or PS’d and I have to agree with you.
The undrafted FA I like to earn a spot is Cook, maybe after getting PS’d early guy can play CB or S and has looked good.
Two TE’s seems like too few, but I can’t imagine cutting any of the other guys on the list with the possible exception of Torbor as a surprise guy. (All young guys behind him, and while he’s versatile he’s below average at everything, we’re not going to the SB this year and it can’t hurt to get the young guys reps)

Unfortunately, odds are, that at least one of those 53 will have a big-time injury before cut day and make things much easier.

I disagree, especially after Easley reinjured his knee. My gut says Roosevelt takes Easley’s spot.

i dont see buffalo taking 10 linebackers

and not sure about 9 olinemen
im figuring 4 inside and 4 outside linebackers moats and batten can play inside and outside same with the olinemen the bills have versatility along that line and would need less im figuring 8 with a chance of 7
and 7 wideouts as well

agreed

I think 10 linebackers is a little extreme. I agree, 8 is prob the magic number there. Can’t see less than 8 O-linemen though. Especially with what happened last year.

buffalo's own naaman roosevelt

he and fitz seemed to click near the end of the season when he got some playing time. any chance he could beat out one of the other WR?

Yes, he could take Easley’s spot. So far, Easley is all potential – he has not been able to even stay on the practice field.

With the spread offense

I could see us carrying 7 receivers.
