What the Evans trade rumor tells us

Over the last two days, the hot topic has been Evans potential move from the Bills... Many are for the idea and many are against. I for one was against the idea. The rest of the article is under the assumption that the rumors have some truth to it.

I felt it was short-sighted to see Evans numbers from the last two years and say he is on the decline... The first year the numbers declined because TO was the alpha receiver in the team whether he kept his mouth shut or not. TO was obviously a better route runner with still having speed as he showed last year at Cincinnati.

Last year, every team knew Evans was the only reputed WR that we had in our team and focused mostly on him. That took the attention away from the likes of johnson and parrish and allowed them to develop. A key thing to note is even with the decline his average per reception last two years is around 15.7 yds/ catch! And he had a healthy number of TDs as well... That doesnt sound like he is losing a step or something...

So I felt this year his numbers are bound to jump back as teams will have to split their focus atleast between Evans and Johnson. Add the fact that Gailey is working on making Evans a complete receiver, it sounded like a season to look forward to.

But then this paragraph in Sal's article,

http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20110810/SPORTS03/108100334/Buffalo-Bills-coaches-want-more-diversity-Lee-Evans-game?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|Bills

caught my attention.

On the flip side, coach Chan Gailey said that Evans needs to diversify his game. He has always been known as a home run hitter, but Fitzpatrick doesn't have the great arm like Losman or Drew Bledsoe, and the deep pass is not his forte, so Evans needs to find ways to excel on other routes.

What I had forgotten was Fitz doesnt have the arm of Losman or Bledsoe. He struggles to make those deep passes. So every time even if Evans is open on a deep ball, its hit or miss if Fitz will make it. Now Gailey is trying to make Evans a better route runner so Fitz will be able to utilize him. What is the point of that when we have other receivers who can already do that better? We cant properly use Evan's strengths and we want Evan's to fix his weakness?

What the rumor also tells us is Gailey is invested in Fitz. He wants to build the offense around Fitz. Fitz's strengths are standing under pressure, good sense of reading defense, making quick decisions and spreading the ball. For what you say about his accuracy, he is pretty accurate in short to intermediate passes. That's why Gailey is moving to pistol spread offense. Lot of receivers who run good routes. Fitz always goes to the open man, releases quick and moves the chain.

Fitz weakness is his arm strength. Defenses probably already know that. They already know Buffalo cannot stretch the field consistently even if they want to. Evans will become just a man on the field if he doesnt develop route running skills thus hindering the chain moving machine Gailey wants to build. Also add the fact that Bills Oline is really poor, Fitz might be forced to go to quick pass offense. This again doesnt let the deep routes for Evans to develop. Sidenote: Maybe not focusing on the Oline was intentional by the FO... anyway...

You might say, why trade Evans just because an interim-QB (Fitz) is not capable to throw to him. Why not keep Evans for our next QB. Lee is 30 this year. Say Fitz is just average and we draft a new QB next year. Fitz will still be a QB next year and the new QB will start only in 2013. Lee will be 32 or 33 by the time the new QB starts playing good. What's the point of having an old deep threat receiver now when he might lose his speed by the time our new QB is up and running.

That's why trading Evans NOW is the best time. Fitz cant use him, and he will be too old for our new QB. Atleast we will get a 5th round pick for a guy who doesnt know to run routes.

Addendum:

The other sticking point is the compensation. Market value would only give a 5th round for a former 1st round pick. You might say I rather keep him in the team than trade him for that. That's good if he develops as a route runner. If he doesnt, then the benefit of trading him is not the 5th round pick but intangibles. If the offense becomes lot more fluid the benefits are greater.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I like your reasoning.

I still think it’s a terrible idea to deal Evans, but your argument does make a lot of sense. I do believe, however, that the benefits of having Evans on the team, running the deep route, helps us more trading him for a mid round pick would.

You make some good points statcruncher, very compelling. The flip side is the compensation, a mid round pick vs. taking a chance Fitz and Lee can work something out. Throw in the slim chance the Bills have a markedly better defense and I am still on the fence.

good point

about the compensation… i added an addendum to the post…

what i think is if by removing him we add fluidity to the offense then the benefit is intangible

Yeah I think this is the argument for dealing Evans. It’s not an insane thing to do. I think theres a decent chance one of the other guys can give his production or more.

But I’m still torn. He could put up much better numbers on a team like Baltimore and we look like nincompoops even though he couldnt do that here (and I know that shouldnt matter, but we get zero credit for doing the right/wrong thing). I also just like the guys all business attitude. He must bring some intangibles to the team. So tough to part ways witha guy like that. But there are some good reasons to think about it.

I’d want a production based trade. Linking it to his output should be key for us if he’s going to a team like the Ravens who can take advantage of his downfield ability more frequently.

Fitz's arm

He has enough arm strength to stretch the field and to use Evans adequately. Coaching staff just has to do a better job moving him around and calling different routes. Gailey has already stated that he plans on doing this. This receiving corp is too green to move a vet (and team captain) this year.

No arm strength problem

Exactly. Fitz doesn’t have a cannon arm, but his arm is plenty strong to deliver a deep ball at the Ralph even under highly windy conditions. Remember that long ball he threw to T.O. in the snow against the Colts year before last? That one traveled a good 40 yards in the air and was right on target. What more do you want?

I want it all

Fitz needs to get all his body into the throw because his arm is average. If he doesn’t, then you see the inaccuracies Fitz is known for. And the deep ball isn’t the only throw it shows up….pretty much any throw over 20 yds and/or outside the hash marks. Our poor OTs are not the only reason we are going with a West Coast Spread Offense. It fits Fitz too. QBs with a big arm can get Fitz-like power falling backwards and flicking their wrist. It makes them that much harder to defend. Also, the time the ball is in the air is a factor. Strong arm QBs can throw a 30 yd strike on a rope, where Fitz has to put more air under the ball. Maybe the ball only gets there a half a second sooner, but in the NFL that is a looong time and could be the difference between a completed pass and an INT.

Brad Smith will provide more of a long arm at times. Not saying he’s the answer at QB, but he will be used this season, and I bet we see deep balls from him.

I'm still not sold on using Multiple QBs during a game.....

it seems to me like to breaks the rhythm of the offense and does more harm than good…..more false starts, fumbled snaps, etc. Can’t we just get a QB that can do it all :-)

I get your thought process but...

I think it’s poor thinking to trade Evans b/c you believe Fitz can’t throw a deep ball, and Evans will be too old by the time we get a QB that can. We have one now, Brad Smith, he will have plenty of opportunities to hit Evans deep. Plus Fitz can throw a deep ball, to TO against Jax, to Evans against BAL multiple times. Fitz just isn’t as consistent in his accuracy. Evans takes the top off the defense (think R Moss without the height advantage), you take him away and it disrupts our whole offense. The remaining receivers aren’t even close to being the threat Evans is. Evans still has plenty of time left, and I don’t want to lose 2 or more years of production from him for a measely 5th round pick that will never produce for this team!

by Sluss88 on Aug 10, 2011 12:41 PM EDT reply actions

Lee Evans should run for political office....

and when he doesn’t produce anything, everyone on here can back him uup and make excuses for him. Evans just isn’t that good. It’s amazing what Bills fans will support. Theyve been bad for so long, mediocrity is welcomed in WNY.

by loupiccone on Aug 10, 2011 1:14 PM EDT reply actions

This is fallacious reasoning. The point is not that Lee Evans is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The points are these:

1. Every other WR on the Bills’ roster (including Johnson) is unproven at best. I love Johnson, Nelson, Jones and Roosevelt, but so far they are “one-hit wonders” at best. People want Easley over Evans, but Easley has never even seen the field in the PRE-SEASON, much less a real NFL game.

2. The Bills would almost surely not get as much value for trading Evans as having him on the roster gives them. So once again it would be letting talent go for next-to-nothing when the roster is filled almost completely with potential only. This is not how you build a winning team – letting talent (even if you only think Evans is mediocre, that’s not what defensive coordinators think) go for nothing.

Fitz's Deep Ball is Fine

I’m not saying Fitz has the best deep ball in the league, but to say that he can’t utilize Lee Evans when Lee is open is ASININE! If Lee Evans, or any receiver for that matter, gets open deep, Ryan Fitzpatrick has the ability to complete the pass, and often with a perfect thrown spiral that hits the receiver in stride. Is statcruncher overlooking the fact the Ryan Fitzpatrick (not Jim Kelly, JP Losman, or Drew Bledsoe) is responsible for the longest TD pass in Buffalo Bills history?! Here’s the Video Evidence:

If we trade Lee Evans, so be it. But don’t try to feed us any BS about Ryan Fitzpatrick not being able to hit an open receiver deep.

Even if Fitzpatrick misses on a deep ball from time to time..

that does not mean that he is incapable of hitting an open receiver deep, or ineffective at utilizing Lee Evans.

I can go on and on with deep pass videos from Fitzpatrick. I’d show the perfect pass he threw against the Steelers that Stevie dropped in OT, but it’s too painful to watch (although that drop made Marcell Dareus a Buffalo Bill).

I haven’t even cited Fitzpatrick’s Cincinnati days.

And a side note, statcruncher, I’m not attacking you personally. I just strongly disagree with your argument and I like to back up my stance with evidence.

by BuffaloOwdaTwnr on Aug 10, 2011 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Add one more — that deep ball to Stevie Johnson in Overtime to win the Steelers game last year (the one Stevie dropped even though it landed right in his hands). That pass was delivered under considerable pressure when Fitz barely had time to set up. Fitz does have an unfortunate tendency to get wildly inaccurate at times (usually when the game is on the line) and that is certainly his major defect as a QB, but that tends to happen because of faulty footwork, not his arm strength.

by Macktruck on Aug 10, 2011 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

This

It’s not that he can’t throw it that far, it’s that he can’t accurately and consistently throw bombs. We need to consider the frequency with which he hits these passes, not the fact he’s got a few in a highlight reel.

The New England game in the wind at the end of the year would have been much less embarrassing if he could have hit on some deep routes. New England’s game plan was to give us the deep outs. We tried and failed to hit them many times. You hit one or two of those and the game changes dramatically. What’s my point?
Yeah he can do it, but he wasn’t very consistent at it.

by greysquirrel on Aug 10, 2011 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

No trading Lee. Not worth the value we would get in return.

His salary is not that huge, and he is still a producer. And will be for a few more years.
The Bills should not disrespect him by trading him for a 5th rounder. Just dumb.
And we would be shooting ourselves in the foot for the upcoming season.
Believe it or don’t, we actually have a chance to make the playoffs folks.

As far as Fitz goes, I think he can throw the long ball well. Sometimes he actually overthroughs receivers. And sometimes he throws ducks.
So does every QB in the league.

This is ridiculus

I know Evans age and his stats but he’s not leaving. You disproved your point about Lee and T. O.. Sure Lee’s stats dropped; All of the receiving stat dropped that year for various reasons: QB, O-line, Coach, cordinator. T.O’s stat went UP when he left for Cincy. This year Lee’s stats may be same if not better only because the ball will be spread around so much. Sure maybe next season if his stat are better then we’ll get more for him. Plus, it was noted he had received 1.5 million bonus already. Why throw that away as well.

IF the Bills Get Something For Him...

I’m fine with trading Evans. I would have been fine trading him two years ago, honestly. Never thought he was a real #1 WR in the league, yet he was getting paid like one. I think he’s limited in what he can do, he rarely will catch a ball for five yards in the middle of the field, and getting YAC from him is almost unknown (unless he beats his man deep and runs untouched to the house). I don’t find him to be an enthusiastic or useful blocker, and I feel like his effort has diminished on 50/50 balls in the past 2-3 years.

That being said, he’s a solid citizen, doesn’t miss games and still can make a big play now and again. Although the fact that his best days came with Losman under center says something. So he’s still got some value. If the most we can get for him is a 5th rounder today, then sit on him. Let him play, see what Chan can get out of him, see if Johnson et al are for real. If everything is working, deal him in the first half for a 4th or even if possible a 3rd to someone desperate (injuries, suddenly contending, etc). If something goes awry, then keep him and find out if Chan can maximize his ability within the system.

I don’t think Evans has dazzled anyone over the past two years. And there should only be a handful of untouchables on this roster. He’s not one of them.

I never thought I’d say this, but projecting future production, I’d rather have Parrish than Evans going forward.

by T McGee on Aug 10, 2011 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Tells Me

Rumors happen and this one is no big deal. Evans can go where ever his talent can take him. On a better team he’d be better…great guy on a bad team.. yadda yadda yah. If we can get something get it. Evan’s and any person should look out for their own well being which I’m sure Lee has. Just tired of hearing how unselfish Evan’s has been, big deal, they play for money, its a job and he got paid. Time for Buffalo to win!

But I could see a scenario where if Lee Evans is traded he could have resurgence, kind of like when we got James Lofton! And Lofton was easily a few years older too!
