Bills made smart, decisive move to dump Evans | ProFootballTalk
"Many think that the Bills are folding the tents even before the season begins. Though we realize that more than a decade of futility would cause Buffalo fans to fear the worst, we think it made sense to move on."

Inside The Bills | Davis move makes more sense "
"The Bills acquisition of Craig Davis last week was a bit peculiar considering Buffalo’s depth at the receiver position. Now with Lee Evans traded, the most to acquire a veteran receiver makes a lot more sense."
Inside The Bills | Nix on the market for Lee "
"There was a lot of interest in Lee and you can understand why," said Nix. "He’s been a good player and done a lot of good things here. He’ll add to Baltimore. I think it’s a good opportunity for him. They’ve got one receiver and he’ll probably move right in and they’ve got a good team. Ozzie Newsome and I go back years and Cam Cameron and I worked together so I think it’s a great opportunity for Lee also."
Bills deal Evans to contender - Bills & NFL - The Buffalo News
"The remaking of the Buffalo Bills' roster under the new regime of Buddy Nix and Chan Gailey took another big step Friday. Was it a step forward or backward? Time will tell, based on the performance of the Bills' young receiving corps in the wake of the trade of Lee Evans to the Baltimore Ravens."
Evans delayed regime change victim - BillBoard - The Buffalo News
"The new broom sweeps clean in the NFL. Teams change regimes, and veteran players invariably get tossed aside. That's at least part of the story with the Bills' trade today of receiver Lee Evans to the Baltimore Ravens."
Nix on young wideouts - BillBoard - The Buffalo News
Nix praised Evans' character: "If you combine the player and the person you’d be hard pressed to find someone who has represented the Bills better than him. He did a lot for this organization and this community."
Lee Evans traded from Buffalo Bills to Baltimore Ravens | Democrat and Chronicle
"Evans, a former first-round pick of the Bills in 2004, had one great year with the team, but for the most part, rather under-performed given his first-round status. He had only two seasons of 1,000 yards receiving or more, only one year when he caught at least 80 passes, he has never surpassed his rookie output of nine TD receptions in a single season."
Newsome, Harbaugh on WR Lee Evans - AFC East Blog - ESPN

Ravens smart to land Lee Evans - AFC East Blog - ESPN
"Starter Anquan Boldin will be the top target underneath, while Evans can blow the top off the defense. Fourth-year quarterback Joe Flacco finally has the speedy receiver he needs to take advantage of his beautiful (but rarely used) deep ball. "
CANOE -- SLAM! Sports - NFL - Evans was heart and soul of Bills
"The Buffalo Bills didn’t just trade away their leading receiver and highest paid player on Friday. When they sent Lee Evans to Baltimore, they also gave up the heart and soul of the franchise. "
Ravens bolster receiving corps with speedster Evans - baltimoresun.com
"It is believed the Ravens were inclined to wait until Evans was cut by the Bills, a small-market team known for reducing their payroll. But Buffalo started shopping Evans aggressively Thursday (Arizona and Carolina reportedly showed interest), which prompted the Ravens to make the trade."

Simple game plan is best for young Bills - Bills & NFL - The Buffalo News
"We've tried to stay a little simpler, because we want the young guys to be able to have some success," Gailey said. "We could probably move a little faster with our veteran players, but we are trying to keep it simple so the young guys can figure out if they can play or not. If it's all mental mistakes, you don't know if they can play or not. So that's the theory going into the game. It's just simplify what we're trying to get accomplished."
Bills face first test with preseason game against the Bears | Democrat and Chronicle
"So when Buffalo takes on the Bears tonight at Soldier Field in Chicago, Chan Gailey really has no idea what to expect from his players, nor how he plans to use each of them."

Still thinking the trade was a bad idea...
quoting the first link PFT;
“Third, with Johnson drawing double coverage based on his breakout performance in 2010, the Bills can plug in cheaper options at No. 2 and enjoy similar production.”
We do NOT need “similar performance” we need to step up our game in pretty much every aspect. Having Evans healthy opposite Stevie was in my opinion going to be really nice. Also, for all the love I have for Stevie I am not completely sold on him or his hands yet. 5 mil is not that much for a team captain.
We do NOT need "similar performance" we need to step up our game
5 mil is not that much for a team captain.
So just going by what you said here, even though Evans production wasn’t enough, and he clearly wasn’t getting it done, it is okay to throw a ton of money at him just because he got voted team captain? Not sure that makes a ton of sense to me.
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Trent Edwards was a team captain and make, what, 500k a season when he got traded?

QB is a single position and we had Fitz waiting in the wings who was much better. Sure Evans didn’t produce much recently because he was hurt but that should not be an excuse since we still have Merriman around. IF we traded everyone who gets hurt and can’t produce we would’t have a team. So trading because of health seems moot. 5mil for Evans to be opposite Stevie doesn’t seem to much to me.
IF we traded everyone who gets hurt and can’t produce we would’t have a team.
Can’t argue with that, just not sure where the team captain worth more thing comes from.
However;
we had Fitz waiting in the wings
Couldn’t the same be said kinda like this; “and we have Easly, Roosevelt, Smith, Davis, and Jones waiting in the wings.” ?
No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.
Well I figure he is the only vet at WR. With 8 years in the league paying 5 million to have a captain for the young wide outs like you said are waiting in the wings. Honestly, he is a good player who had a couple not so hot years and the best we can do is get a 4th round pick. I think keeping him is worth more than a Ravens 4th rounder. Maybe I am wrong, or maybe I am just butt-hurt. Either way, I have an aching feeling we will be regretting this.

We also had a team captain who didn't even start one year.
That was a bizarre shot every time I saw it. JP on the sideline with the C on his jersey yet Trent was on the field playing, lol.
So i took my day of mourning.
I woke up this morning feel less depressed about the trade. But do I have to go to the AFC East Blog and read about how wise a move Baltimore made? Shouldn’t that be in the AFC North Blog? This is somehow causing me more anxiety.
It was written by the AFC North guy and they double-posted into the AFC East blog because they don’t have an AFC East blogger.
I’m willing to talk, ESPN, if you’re listening. :-)

…do they ever?
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
No chance
You need to be a NE guy or Jets guy to write on that blog now. Tim was as much of a homer as we’re going to get.
Trample the weak, hurdle the dead!
The only reason it’s all Jets/Pats is because ESPNNewYork and ESPNBoston have beat writers for the team. When they hired Tim, he had covered the Dolphins and Bills so he was a good fit. They will likely hire someone similar, from Miami or Buffalo, because they already have staff writers working the other beats.

There's only a couple of places i go for insight.
And I was wasn’t terribly opposed to Tim Graham, but it’s been very depressing pulling up ESPN for anything Bills the last few weeks.
Withou Lee...
I bet Spiller’s going to be used as a receiver a lot this year.

i agree
And that makes it easier to swallow the trade. Anyone who watched spiller in college knows he can be a deep threat and I’m aure he wasnt drafted that early to be a compliment to freddy.
