Comeuppance
I had to title this comeuppance. I couldn't help myself. First, I figured this had to be probably the first, last and only post ever titled comeuppance. Second, it fits the story of Donte Whitner's foray into free agency. A man who, in the opinion of most, is finally getting his comeuppance. More after the jump.
Most of us recall the negotiations between the BIlls and Whitner reaching an impasse in 2010. Whitner believed that the Bills offer, believed to be $5,000,000 a year, was insufficient for a player of his caliber. Bills brass did not agree with Whitner and the sides went their respective ways. As the Bills practice with George Wilson filling Whitner's former post, Whitner is left with little to do except blast his much maligned Twitter "insight" out for the word to see. What his Twitter post have shown is a far more contrite Whitner than we have seen to date.
Whitner hoped to do what Eric Weddle somehow managed to do this offseason, combine mediocrity with a team eager to overspend and cash in with a top 5 contract. Alas it was not to be. Whitner could not turn his contract year into a career contract.
Little has been heard of his free agent journey. Some rumors began swirling regarding the Bengals, but those quickly fell apart. As of today, I am not aware of any suitors competing for his services. Capitalism at its finest here boys, the market is dictating Whitner's value. Clearly he and his agent failed to appreciate his market before hitting free agency.
Whitner has his much chronicled limitations. His coverage skills would be poor for a linebacker, yet alone a safety. He has been a key contributor towards the frustrating inability of the Bills to cover a tight end since 2006.
I suppose the rambling point of my post is this. First, to a small extent it allows us fans to revel in his comeuppance. He's getting what he deserves, after trying so hard to convince everyone he was so great.
Second, I am still interested to see where he goes and for how much. The season is fast approaching. I've heard next to nothing about his whereabouts. His twitter posts suggest he longs to return to Buffalo, which is odd since he set fire to that bridge while he ran out the door. I think that door is soundly closed. I'm curious to see if anybody has any thoughts on possible landing spots or if anyone has heard any rumors about his suitors.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Can You blame Whitner?
After seeing the contract that the Bills gave to Kelsey why wouldn’t Whitner think he was worth top safety pay

insider says cincy and him are talking a lot and looking like thats going to happen. Who knows though..
Does not the dieing snake bite deapest?
This is why I didnt understand
why people were blasting Whitner for wanting to see how much money he could get. Bills fans were screaming at the top of their lungs about how hes such a jerk for wanting to get as much as he could on the market or from the Bills. What was the big deal? He was fully entitled to do that and now its setting his market and hopefully he’ll end up back in Buffalo for an appropriate price for his services.
From the beginning Ive been hoping Whitner would come back down to Earth and the Bills would understand his transgressions verbally were just a young man trying to get paid (and let’s be real, nothing WRONG with that, 90% of American men have done the same). At the end of the day he plays his butt off on the field and digs the city and the fans.
I’ll welcome Donte Whitner back with open arms and at a more reasonable price whenever he or OBD are ready. The market has done its job. If one of the sides is too proud to sack up and make up that’s too bad because Donte can definitely be a starter at SS for a reasonable price that can be a leader on this improving defense.
I still say Whitner has gotten better every year and he still will. Who cares if hes not a star and wanted to get paid like one? On the field he plays for us and the team and hustles.

Even though we sometimes fret about his coverage ability, the dude doesn’t take a play off. He is not as good as the contract he was hoping to land by testing the FA market, but if this experience (barring he gets signed by someone else) humbles him back down to Earth and subsequently to the Bills as well I would be overjoyed!

I agree. But I can’t help but think that his feelings were ‘hurt’ by the Bills (even if they gave him a fair offer) and he is unwilling to revisit a return. It’s a shame though, he would make use better.
Have to agree
Whitner is a really good athlete and I consider him an above average tackler. As a safety that is important, you have to be able to tackle one on one. He did spend some time playing corner during his time at OSU. I saw him play there a couple times though I didn’t even think he was their best safety. Nate Salley drafted by the Carolina Panthers was a physical specimen. He was very fast for his size, but Whitner was quicker and more agile. I always imagined him more as a big free safety. Anyways, Donte is a good player, not elite, and he I know he exposed by a poor pass rush and tight ends who never have to stay in and block or chip and got plenty free releases of the line of scrimmage.

Cincy has so much cap room that they will definitely sign him in the end.
Who else are they going to pay money to?
I’m an &ss, and loyalty counts a lot in my book.
It does with Buddy and Chan too. They could care less about him right now.
He played poker, bluffed, and lost the pot when he found out that nobody wanted to pay him more than what the Bills already offered.
So I hope the Bills sign him for $12 mil, 4 years, with 4 mil guaranteed.

Most likely, the people who were blasting Whitner could tell there was no way on God’s green earth he was going to get what he was demanding. They knew he had a totally overinflated view of himself.

Well, Whitner won't be going to Philly
The Eagles just signed Jarrad Page so they shouldn’t need help at safety. Page was playing for the Patriots so the Whitner-to-Foxboro rumors may pick up a little more steam.
Even if Whitner doesn’t get a huge payday I dont’ know that anyone can crow about him, um, eating crow if he signs with a consistent playoff team.
It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.
The deal with Donte Whitner is the Bills made the offer before the draft.
Since then they did draft a SS in D’Noriss and also drafted a big CB in A. Williams who could play some safety. Donte’s offer from the Bills could very well be off the table or definately different than the original offer.
