Chan Gailey Approval Poll: August 2011
At the start of every month, we're going to poll the readers of Buffalo Rumblings on their state of mind regarding the chief decision-makers of the Buffalo Bills. This is your poll to state your pleasure, or lack thereof, with head coach Chan Gailey. Here are some stories Gailey has been heavily involved with over the last month.
- Was a big advocate for the signing of free agent quarterback Tyler Thigpen to be Ryan Fitzpatrick's backup. Signing shows commitment to a spread offense.
- Significant training camp lineup note: Demetrius Bell, Andy Levitre, Eric Wood, Kraig Urbik and Erik Pears as starters along the offensive line.
- Announced plans to use free agent signee Brad Smith in a Kordell Stewart-inspired "Slash" role.
- Explained the team's decision to move second-year linebacker Arthur Moats inside.

Voted not sure, & will continue to do so until preseason/1st month of regular season is over. With this only being a week full of practice since the lockout, hard to get a grasp on the improvements. Players & coaches still shaking off that lockout rust.

Not sure
The play on the field, all 60 minutes, coming from behind or holding a lead, will decide.

Love the move
I’m all for trying Moats inside. We’ve got to infuse those ILB positions with talent and more athleticism. I know Moats has shown signs of being a plus pass-rusher, but having those skills on the inside is what can separate such a ‘backer from the rest of the thumpers out there who are a dime-a-dozen. Kevin Burnett is one of those guys (a guy EVERYONE on this site seemed to be drooling over) who can rush the passer from the inside. They obviously feel OK with Merriman, Kelsay, Coleman, and Batten on the edges so I’m good with Chan trying to put the 4 most talented LBs on the field at once instead of having to roll with Davis or Torbor inside next to Barnett.

Moats
Good points on Moats move inside. My initial reaction to Moats moving inside was a negative one, but the more and more I think about it, the more I am leaning on your side.

Talent needs to play...
agree totally, get Moats on the field . . . that way no one can “Cross the Moats” , the 4 most talented LB’s should be on the field!!!
Rec'd
At first, I hated it because of the dearth of depth behind Merriman. But after I thought about it a bit, Coleman isn’t there far behind Moats developmentally and if Moats doesn’t work out or Merriman goes down, move him back. The reward is potentially greater than the risk.
Trust Issue?
I think it’s a plus for Chan to be showing that much trust in the ’stache to make such a move. Why get the brains involved and not let them make things happen?
I prayed for patience and I'm STILL waiting for an answer
Not sure
I’m not a fan of the Spread style offense, but I understand why he’s doing it. I do not understand moving Moats inside. I like Thigpen, but I can’t get overly excited about it. I’m also not excited about Urbik and Pears being the starters on the right side of the line. All that said, that doesn’t mean I hate all those things either, so Not Sure it is (for this month, at least).

I’m beginning to wonder if the Bills tried to move up for Newton, given this sudden increase in spread-style players. It would make sense.

agreed on the spread offense....
though it depends what variation we run…….absolutely HATE the old Oilers Chuck N Duck style spread. And you can add the whole “slash” type QB to the list of gimmicky crap I hate as well. Just give me a QB that can throw the freaking ball.

I would really love to know how someone can honestly have this opinion.
While I disagree with the folks who are still fence sitters (take a stand people!!!!) I cannot understand how someone could state ‘These guys know what they are doing’ and believe it.
If a 4-12 record last year plus no significant offseason upgrade (other than Dareus) is proof that these guys know what they are doing, then I do not know what to say. This team is still a LONG LONG way from being a competitive team year in year out…..there has not been enough of an upgrade at any position (minus DE) as of yet.
This is going to be the longest rebuild in the history of rebuilds.

Gailey in my opinion is doing a fine job w/ what he had and now currently. Despite our feelings about Nix and what seem his lack of effort. Nix did a lot w/ $42 million but I’m sure most Bills fans expected as I did; To see more effort and $ spent on Free Agency. We shall see… I like Gailey. He is very good using the talent provided by OBD and gets them to play their game. He creates mismatches and makes us proficient as an offense knowing he has questions across the O-line mainly at OT. He is a very creative offensive mined coach who gets the best out of his players. You cant ask for any more IMO. We can ask for more help though from OBD!

I like what he's doing
But find it kind of hard to “approve” of a guy who won four games last year. Approve of the direction he’s going in? I like it, sure, but until we get results I can’t approve of it.
Voted not sure. Gonna have to wait until the first couple weeks of September to get a better grasp.
Not Sure
Wins = approve
Losses = disapprove
Basically it will boil down to how he uses the weapons he has acquired… It the offense reminds us of more prolific times I am willing to vote approve. But I will see how it plays out.

I actually voted disapprove.
Look, I like Chan Gailey. I like that he seems vested in getting the best out of what he has, and sticking to his guns with a formula he seems to think will pay dividends to the team. I just cannot be comfortable with his acceptance of the edge of the OL. I simply can’t understand why Moats is best used as development inside. Finally, i’m not certain he truly believes the team needs major improvement at QB, involving the aquisition of a future draft’s cream-of-the-crop type player. Will Thigpen create controversy simply because Gailey has rolled with him in the past? Is Brad Smith really to become the team’s heir-apparent at QB?
I’m concerned with a good number of things, but still like Gailey. He feels like a coach that cares enough about improving on gameday. That was something sorely missing since the days of Gregg Williams.

that maybe – but that’s not his decision – Nix would have drafted Newton.

coupled with your comment above,
Isn’t it his job to advocate for better talent?
All of what you say echoes my opinion. And to add, whatever the situation, a coach that won 4 games last year and hasn’t called a play this one, cannot warrant an 83% approval rating.
If he has no say in the personnel, shame on him for sticking around. If he does have a say, shame on him for maintaining the staus quo at several key positions.

stop shooting from the hips… put yourself in the position before you make a point… its easy to say anything as a fan..
in your company, if your opinion is not considered, you will quietly look for another job and move away… you wont storm out of the office… that’s job security… and that’s even more important when the scrutiny is so high…
obviously gailey will say what kind of players he wants.. if he doesnt get them he will scheme to minimize the team’s weakness… if he succeeds, it looks great on his resume… if can be a great OC or head coach for a better organization… it wont go unnoticed…
no “shame in sticking around”… infact it would be a shame if he reacted… how will other organizations trust him

AT, this is Fitz’s team, no doubt about it.
Bigger concern is keeping all the WR’s happy. There are many players and only one ball. Evans and Johnson wide, Nelson in the slot, Spiller out of the backfield, roles for Jackson and Smith. I see Parrish as being the odd man out in the offensive scheme, hope he can be happy with it.

After the Pittsburgh loss last year, he wrote this (http://blogs.nfl.com/2010/12/02/four-downs-bills-are-nfls-most-improved-team/):
1. The most improved team in the league right now is the Bills. The Bills are 2-4 over the last six weeks, and three of those losses were in overtime. They also should have easily won in Pittsburgh last week. I see improvement in all areas for the Bills, especially along the offensive line. More specifically, at left guard and left tackle. Demetrius Bell and Andy Levitre are a very, very talented left side we’re going to hear about for a long time. They’re a big reason why Ryan Fitzpatrick is flourishing. They have great technique, don’t get beat and are very physical. They took on the Steelers’ toe to toe and not only didn’t flinch, but outplayed the guys across from them.
I have a hard time taking him seriously if he thinks that Bell is going to be a big talent in the league for years to come. But maybe he’ll prove me wrong :)

Broken record comment – Can’t really approve of the coach until you see the team on the field. Boring answer, but true.
However, I do like the idea of a spread offense, and I’m totally in love with the acquisition of Brad Smith. Without seeing any game action, I get the sense more and more that Chan Gailey has a vision and it seems like he’s going to make it happen. And it’s pumping me up! So on a total gut reaction to the way this offseason has played out (as brief as it has been), I voted approve.
Voted not sure
Up from disapprove at the end of last year. Finished disapprove because of horrible team efforts in last two games of regular season. Upgraded to not sure because of his role in signing of Brad Smith and Tyler Thigpen. Still believe he is a much better offensive coordinator than head coach.
I approved
but then, it’s only(almost) pre season. Lets see how the team looks when were 4 or 5 games into the NFL regular season.
The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun
Chan was given a huge turd sandwhich to eat at the beginning of last year and he has this team believing in themselves.
Approve so far.

WOW!!! disapprovers?
By voting that you fully dislike what Gailey is doing is like saying Dick&Co. would be doing better. If you trust Ralph than Chan Gailey was our best option after firing Jauron. Last year was the first time this decade I really got excited during a bills game and excitement is the reason I watch so…. as far as I’m concerned Gailey can lead MY football team until he makes it boring to watch and I don’t see that happening
...
Let me start by saying that I didn’t vote disapprove.
“By voting that you fully dislike what Gailey is doing is like saying Dick&Co. would be doing better” — No, not true. It’s not an either/or situation. Just because someone disapproves of Gailey right now doesn’t mean they think Jauron could do better. They merely prefer a better option.
“excitement is the reason I watch "
— Look, I’m not a genius by any means. But as Bills fans, after what we’ve been through this past decade, shouldn’t excitement be irrelevant? I’d rather be boring and win than exciting and lose.
exactly
Since I’m so used to seeing us lose, winning is irrelevant, at least I want to see our team trying to make the big play, Gailey brings big play potential….
Am I in love with the Brad Smith signing, moving Moats to inside linebacker, and moving McGee in the slot? No. But I think that he knows more than me and if he is wrong, I think that he will correct it immediately. I am not saying that he will just cut Brad Smith but I think that he would change how he uses him if the plays aren’t working. As far as the Moats situation, I see that as a temporary thing really. If Barnett or Davis is injured, he probably wants someone that has experience to be able to go in and play or he just thinks that he will be better at that position. I don’t understand the experimentation with McGee as the nickel corner. To me, I think that he should be on the number one guy. The guy has been in football longer than I have been alive so he knows more than I do.
approved
as he has a plan & executing it. tells it like it is.
cudos for getting the personnel guys to get a fa qb & rookie he has prior working exp. coupled with smiths versatility he should have all the qbs on the same page early.
really a bit too early for a chan poll, but good luck on the next couple coach.

First time I didn’t vote approve for Gailey. Voted not sure.
Not liking the direction of the O – not a fan of going spread and what looks like will be a gimmicky playbook based on personnel acquisitions. Others have expressed these concerns in more detail above. If it works, of course I will eat my words and get back on the wagon.

I voted approve
1 Chan seems to get the best out of the players he has, this should be a coachs number one priority.
2 He realises the quickest way to get better on defense is to improve the coaching there, but continuety is also important, he brought in Wannstedt, but kept Edwards as DC.
3 In July he seems to be getting the players up to speed quite quickly.
4 I just like the way he goes about things.
