Any Interest In Taylor Mays?

With Donte Whitner apparently heading to San Francisco (unless, you know, he has a sudden change of heart and gives the 49ers the same finger he just gave to the Bengals) Taylor Mays has become expendable. According to the link he's expendable to the point that the 49ers sent an e-mail to all 31 teams stating that he's up for bid. Mays was drafted 49th overall just last year. That's awfully quick to give up on a guy, particularly someone who was just getting his feet underneath him.

Anyway, the Bills would seem to be a little thin at safety. Should Buffalo call up San Fran and offer up a plate of wings for Mays' rights? I'm guessing that he got a front loaded contract as a second round player so he shouldn't be overly expensive. The Bills could kick his tires for the next few weeks before deciding whether to keep him or go with someone else.

Poll
Should the Bills bring in Mays?
Yes. He was a second round pick just last year and may help at SS.

No. San Fran is casting away a second round pick after only one season for some unknown but crucial reason.

What’s the harm? If he fails a physical or is worthless Buffalo can cut him before the year begins and, I believe, not be on the hook for his salary.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

the harm is the asking price......I'm not giving up much more than a 5th round pick for him

It would cost a draft pick, I would gibe up a 6th or a 5th at the most and see if they will bite. I feel like that is what the Pats would do. When in doubt, do as the Pats would do.

A 7th may get the job done if no one really offers anything....

….which may be the case since the PFT story intimates that he could be cut if he’s not traded

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

know???

how valuable 7th rd picks have been for us lately though???

Keep the 7th, give a 6th instead…. :-)

Two things

If they cut him I think he’d pass through waivers. I think that gives the Bills a good shot at him but not ahead of Carolina, Denver, and possibly others.

Also, if the Bills (or anyone else) trades for him they get him and his contract. It’s a good bet about half of the value of his contract has been absorbed by the 49ers…..so he’d be cheaper (I suspect) to trade for than to sign after being cut.

It can always get worse. Let me tell you how.

I thought the whole reason the 49ers were getting rid of Mays was that he couldn’t cover. That is not what the Bills need in a safety. They just finally got rid of a too-highly-drafted, overpaid safety that couldn’t cover. Why bring in another one, especially if you’d have to give up a pick for him.

On Waivers

I’d take him. Don’t give anything up for him, though.

Taylor Mays seems to show some of the down side of modern USC. He is preternaturally talented, lightning fast and built like a Greek god. But it seems he never worked a day in his life. He doesn’t have proper tackling technique, and he sometimes seems afraid to hit on the field. I think he’s too high on himself to take self-improvement seriously, a problem that a few USC guys have developed (Leinart, McKnight, Mays). That attitude would never play well in Buffalo.

As a USC fan, I hoped he was the second coming of Polamalu. But Polamalu loves to hit and would do anything to get better. Mays is a lazy ballerina in football equipment.

I'd take a flyer on him

Simply because he is a freakish athlete. I mean the kid can fly and hit like a train.

Sadly if he’s being shopped already, theres a good chance it means he’s dumber than a bag of rocks.

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

i would trade a low pick for him and see how he could do as a ss or linebacker

I wouldn't trade anything for him

But if we want to grab him off waivers, that would be fine with me.

I think there is a good chance that someone will go after him as a LB in a 4-3 defense. Maybe a stiffer but faster Thomas Davis. If not; then Munchausen may be correct.

I say yes, as unpopular as many may find it.

New regime doesn’t have a plan for him. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t belong somewhere else. I’d like to know more about his lack of turn-and-cover skills, as Brian pointed out earlier.

I vote no. He was an underachiever in college who got drafted in the 2nd round because of his combine performance. To me, he’s Aaron Maybin without the one good year in college.

by Dr. Brackish Okun on Aug 5, 2011 2:01 AM EDT reply actions

I voted yes. And to piggy-back on BillsGators comment...

What about bringing him in for a situational pass rusher? Hes 6’3" – 230lbs. Fast as hell and might be able to rush the passer. Obviously he wouldnt be starting or even 2nd string… but I bet he could do a better job than Maybin.

I'd trade a 4th-6th for him

great abilities fast and can hit, if he can learn how to cover then it’d be great for us. Also with our situation here he doesn’t have to start or even play right away….he can just sit and learn the system until the coaches feel comfortable in his ability to cover and be a real contributer.
