Buffalo Bills' Ryan Fitzpatrick Eligible For Week 1 NFL Award
It was a very strong start to the 2011 season for Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, and as such, he is one of three Week 1 nominees for the FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week honor, given weekly to the league's best passer (as determined by fan vote).
Fitzpatrick completed 17-of-25 passes for 208 yards with four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 133.0 quarterback rating in a 41-7 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He's up for the award alongside Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers (27-of-35, 312 yards, 3 TD, 132.1 QB rating) and New England's Tom Brady (32-of-48, 517 yards, 4 TD, 1 INT, 121.6 QB rating). That's quality competition for Fitzpatrick in Week 1, and shows just how well he played at Arrowhead Stadium.
Fans can vote for Fitzpatrick at this link, as well as check out all of his highlights from the win over Kansas City. I'll admit to a bit of bias on this issue, but it only makes sense to me to vote for the man that is currently the NFL's highest-rated passer. That's Fitzpatrick.

I don’t know, 517 is an awful lot of yards. Granted he threw it almost twice as many times as Fitzpatrick. Either way I would never vote for a that ugg shoe pedaling poofer.

Fitzy over Brady?
Maybe closer than we think. While Brady had the yardage, Fitz had the accuracy (no INTS) and the points.

Tough call, A rodge looked impressive as always, Brady is Brady, and Fitzy had a great week. 1 thing to note is that Fitz did this is 3 quarters of play, if it was a close game who knows if he would have had 5 td passes and another 100 yards? Plus as Brian states, He has the highest rating. Obviously i vote Fitz anyways.

no chance he wins. Brady 500+ yards. however, I still voted for Fitz

I agree with this...
Voters see yards not QB Rating…The QB Rating is a mystery to most people. I still voted Fitz though…
What is with all the "close call..." posts?!

Cam Newton and Drew Brees should be included in this vote.
But honestly, I don’t see how anyone thinking unbiased can vote Fitzy over the other two guys. Aaron Rodgers had the same number of incompletions and did ALL his scoring in the first quarter. Then he backed off.
And Brady with that throw to Welker, staring down an intense blitz – man that was a play for the ages.
I support and root for the Bills as much as you all here, but I have to think that Fitzy’s numbers are a nice surprise, but not quite on the same level as Rodgers or Brady. Brady threw for that many yards and STILL managed those kinds of compelling stats. Take out the 99 1/2 yard TD and he’s still in this conversation.
We can’t ignore him simply because we hate what he’s done to the Bills.

I think they’re comparable. Fitzy didn’t have a chance to throw for that many yards because he was scoring too fast on short fields to put up that many attempts. Yes, Brady threw for 517 yards, but he also threw it 50 times. I think as an individual performance, Fitzy was more efficient and effective than both those guys. It also helped that he had an effective running game the whole game.

Who the hell asked you to be biased in a fan vote? This ain’t the frigging Pro Bowl, man. Vote for Fitz!

I’d have to say that saying and linking “Fans can vote for Fitzpatrick at this link,…” constitutes an implied bias.
I don’t care what people think of me saying what I did. I don’t think Fitzpatrick deserves this vote over other QBs in week 1. His performance is great, no doubt about it. It was a huge surprise, certainly.

best QB in the game IMO – even if Manning were playing I still put him over both Brady and Manning at this point – he’s gonna tear the NFL up for the next 7-8 years
I have to wonder if sitting on the bench behind Favre made Rodgers into the QB we’re seeing today. Both because of the learning opportunity and the level of frustration he likely felt thinking he’d NEVER get a chance to play.
This season should reveal just how good Peyton Manning is. What a tough year to be a Colts fan, i’d imagine.

Fitz worked with a shorter field all day. Played less time in the game. Got the samme amount of tds with almost half the throws. Fitz was a more efficient passer than brady was. With all those yards he only has 4tds.

I think anyone who believes this should belongs to Fitzpatrick over Aaron Rodgers is wearing their zubaz too tightly. I consider the quality of competition for this vote.
And for the record, i’m not voting. I don’t want to vote against Fitz, but i’d likely not vote for him, as unpopular as it makes me with everyone here.

my comment was in relation to why Henne wasn’t in there because he deserves it as much as Fitz – Rodgers IMO should win this vote – but I voted for Fitz mutliple times. :)
Oh I knew that. I was sort of moving the string here along. =)
Hell, i’ll vote for Fitz, just because I like all youze pplz. (Those z’s are for Fit-Z) =O)

The quality of competition? Is the Saints secondary that much better than the Chiefs’?

for the love of God just vote for FItz Afghan!
we NEVER get recognition for anything even when it is TOTALLY UNFAIR that we dont. Clearly fairness is not a factor in the spotlight and attention that professional athletes get. Vote for Fitzpatrick so a very deserving man gets some national love for freaking once. Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers get plenty, come on brother!!

500 yards is damn impressive.
Vote often for Fitz, though.

On almost 50 attempts…just one of which was 99 yards due to the Fins’ silly blitz and Welker beating his man over the top. Let’s look at the whole thing beyond stats, please.

99 1/2 yards for a TD IS pretty freaking amazing. Didn’t Fitzy and Owen complete one nearly as long last year, say 94 yards?

Two years ago, it was 98 yards. And it was good recognition of blown coverage on a poor blitz, nothing I wouldn’t expect from Brady. My point was that the 500 yards, while being fantastic, can be put into context, like the 99 yarder toward the end of the game.

Um hello...
Anyone care to comment in recognition that our qb ryan fitzy is mentioned in the same context as rodgers and brady? Holy hell …lets be friggin happy and proud of fitzy. When on his game we all see him as a top qb. The rest of the league is playing catch up. They dont even know our players names. But by the end of this season I would hope fitzpatrick and others become well known. Vote for fitz..
