Everything aroound that Gish piece and the responses are ugly.
The original piece that she wrote was pretty arrogant basically slamming the entire Bills fanbase in a untasteful manner. But even so, people sending ridiculously ugly responses like that is very uncalled for and disgusting. However, I also bet that she received some well thought out and articulate responses and she refused to published those because that didn’t paint the artificial picture that she wanted to present with this new article.
Its just all-around ugly.
Does she think she's the only one?
It’s not just her and other female writers that get this kind of mail. Every major sports writer gets this mail. Ever look at the comments section for Chris Chase on yahoo? It’s borderline hysterical how relentlessly they attack him.
Did I mention the tank is a tank?
I was accused of being a racist for questioning whether Ryan Kerrigan could play outside linebacker in the NFL. I didn’t even say he couldn’t; I just questioned whether he could. Ergo, me is a racist.

It was the plan all along
It must have been. She wrote snarky ugly piece attacking the entire region, then when inevitable blow back occurs, she cherry picks the ugliest responses to get sympathy.
Holly cow is she mean.

Yeah, the original article was obviously an attempt to solicit a response from a passionate fan base and it sure did. It’s unfortunate that people took the bait because they make everyone look pretty sad… I can’t justify any of the responses she put out there (and yes, it’s obvious she hand picked the responses) but I don’t have any sympathy for her. What did she expect?

Our favorite SB Nation “writer” (definitely not a researcher) takes a rip at the Bills because of those comments that a very small portion of the fanbase left.

Just read the Gish pieces
Those comments were totally out of bounds, but I agree w/u Blitzboy – not sure what she expected. Her tone is almost over-the-top condescending. And that wide right comment served no function in the article other than to goat bills fans by bringing up a painful memory. You hit people where it hurts, they are going say whatever they can that they think will hurt you right back. I would guess many of those people don’t actually feel that way about female sports reporters but I could be wrong.
You wrote a mean-spirited, nasty article. Check. You attacked the very nature of being a fan, specifically, a Bills fan. And you were surprised by the response? I do not condone the nature of the responses. They were also mean-spirited and nasty. This would have happened in any city for any team or if you had replaced the team name with the New York Giants or New York Jets. It also would have happened whether or not you were a woman. Of course, the misogynistic nature of the comments would have changed BUT the tenor of the comments would have been similar. It is laughable that you turn this whole episode into a misogyny in sports piece. The explanation is simple, when you write trash that makes people angry and insults the very nature of who they are then people will seek any way to insult you and hurt them the same way they were hurt. If the writer was black I’m sure (unfortunately) the n word would have been used multiple times. Does that mean the writer should start to see racism everywhere in sports?
I think the sad thing is that what you will take away from this experience is that sports fans (football) are misogynistic. Instead, you should examine the nature of your piece and recognize how mean-spirited and insulting it was. Silly jokes like Buffalo being part of Canada for example. Your article has too many to mention. I hope you take the time between now and your next column to reflect on yourself rather than only looking at the responses.

Gish article
I just read the article and the response. Seems a bit sophomoric to me, her writing that first article (which really included no points about actual sports, just one-liners in response to fan optimism? is she a comedian?), and then, her publishing a few responses that are really misogynistic (no doubt) with, again, no real response or thoughtfulness in reply. She doesn’t actually write much, she cuts and pastes… kind of a boring writer.
That said, those “little girls” waiting to become sports writers should be encouraged, and there are a lot of good female sports journalists out there (she could have written about them to show little girls that they need to ignore the negative comments, but she didn’t…)
A bit of self-pity on public display. Feh.

If those little girls want to learn anything about sports journalism, they need to avoid any advice from Jen Gish.
She says “it was like any ribbing you get in any sports bar.” Well, Jen Gish, now I know how you view your job, and your paper. Last time I checked, bar talk and newspaper copy were held to different standards. But congratulations on your bar-talk newspaper hybrid. Why even go to a sports bar?

The Gish article was mean.
And I mean the original. I’m not condoning the responses she got. They were tasteless, too. But (and I’m saying this AS a woman) if she thinks for one second that the reason that she got the response she did is just because a woman’s opinion isn’t allowed in sports, she’s flat out wrong. (And for the record boys, I’ve never, ever gotten that opinion from any of you around here.) Let’s take a few snippets from her original article, shall we?
“Help me help you, Bills fans.” (sorry, block quote doesn’t like me today.) Great way to start out. We need her help, clearly. We’re THAT bad off. Thanks. Way to set the tone, lady.
“And Buffalo is practically in Canada….Are they even America’s team?” Way to insult a whole city. Buffalo is so irrelevant, we’re giving you away to Canada. We deserve no respect, since we’re barely even American!! I’m pretty sure that she’s not giving the Texans or the Cowboys over to Mexico, though.
“Unfortunately, kids, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Brady won’t be taking the GREs on Sunday…And maybe Fitzpatrick will end up at the Hall of Fame one day. To watch Brady’s induction.” Really? She called us “kids?” The only reason to do that is to suggest that we’re in need of her “insturction.” It’s put there to make you feel like less than her. And she knows it. Because in the next paragraph, it’s not kids it’s the even more condescending “Bless you,” something usually reseved for either the very young (and therefore naiive,) the very old (who are usually so “adorable” because they’re so forgetful and frail!!) or church.
The response was angry, and she’s surprised? It was one of the most condescending, arrogant pieces I’ve ever read. A lot of the national media at least TRIES to hide their disdain for Buffalo and all in it. She didn’t. It’s blatant. It’s intentional. And it has absolutely nothint to do with her being a woman. Which makes the fools who blamed it on that, thus giving her some ability to play the victim card, even more foolish. She’s no one’s victim on this one.

Gish
She doesn’t want fans to “rush her blindside?” Improperly using sports phrases to make your point does nothing for the author’s cause.
Writing such a condescending article to a fanbase STARVED for some success while they get a rare reward for loyalty is OPENING UP YOUR BLINDSIDE.
That’s why you don’t try to throw a 50 yard bomb with no blockers…which is a pretty good analogy for that first article.
So whine about your blindside all you want. But I suggest getting some protection or retire early.

Read through some of the comments @ T-U…this says it efficiently:
Last week the TU insulted Bills fans, this week they brand them all as sexist, foul-mouthed pigs.
It’s a lousy defense. So, you wrote a jerky piece, and some bigger jerks let you have it, and so you are off the hook? Two wrongs don’t make a right.
The stuff people wrote is revolting, but using it to wriggle out of taking responsibility while playing the poor beleaguered woman card is just pathetic.
Editors might be loving the number of page views but I wish they would Squish Gish.

Her piece was terrible, to be sure, but it’s very sad to see the level of disrespect people have shown her. Those are Bills fans? I’m sorry, but that is juvenile to the nth degree. Some of that hate mail is down right disgusting, and I’m ashamed that people who call themselves Bills fans were responsible. Seriously, it’s sad to me, and there is no excuse. I don’t care if it was just a few out of thousands of responses, it is a horrible representation of us as a fan base.

Well, there are trouble makers in every bunch. I’m sure she handpicked the most embarrassing emails to put in that article just to make herself look like a victim. I agree they said some terrible and nonsensical things. But its amazing the paper let her post all of that. Screwy. I think that paper lost major credibility over this whole fiasco.
