Ask A Chiefs Fan - Bills at Chiefs Edition

Update:  as many of you have heard, Chiefs QB Matt Cassel sustained a cracked rib in the last preseason game and may or may not play this coming week - latest reports indicate he MAY play after all, and will likely be a gameday decision - we'll do our best to keep you posted

Are you ready for some football?  Yeah, we all are, especially Chiefs fans at Arrowhead Pride ... and as the 2011 NFL gets underway at last, we know that you have questions about the Chiefs as the Bills upcoming foe, just as we have questions about the Bills.

It's been nearly two years since Chan Gailey was "gently removed" from his position as Offensive Coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs, and now as Chan and the Bills head into their second season together, the Bills are looking more cohesive, more complete.  Our own guy, Todd Haley, has the Chiefs looking pretty good as well, with the team coming off a somewhat-impressive 10-6 season and an AFC West division title.  But, how much of that was Chiefs toughness, and how much was the result of the softest schedule in NFL history?  Well, that's part of what we'll find out this year, because for the Chiefs, 2011 is going to be anything but easy, with games coming up against the rapidly improving Lions, the always dangerous Colts, the Jets, the Pats, the Steelers, the Bears and the Defending Champion Green bay Packers.

So, who are these Chiefs, and how much will the loss of TE Tony Moeaki hurt the team?   Is Matt Cassel a real NFL QB?   Is Jamaal Charles really the best RB since Barry Sanders?  Can Dwayne Bowe repeat his impressive 2010 season?   And what of the Chiefs defense?  Will Romeo Crennel's "bend but don't break" philosophy work well enough for the Chiefs to win more than 8 games this year?  We'll begin finding out in a week as the Chiefs open the season by playing hosts to the Buffalo Bills.   We're here to answer your questions the best we can, although some things we might not know til the season gets underway, or perhaps even later in the year.   Meantime,  grab the remote, some chips and dip and your favorite beverage, lean back in the easy chair and get ready ...

... for some FOOTBALL!

With how crazy the off-season was I paid almost zero attention to anybody else’s transactions other then the Bills. And truth be told, I haven’t paid much attention to the Chiefs either. How do you as a Chiefs fan see this game playing out?

No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.

As a bills fan

I see this game as a close battle by virtually equal teams… Especially after last year’s wild finish

Pretty sure both sides view this as a winnable game. Which means one side isn’t going to be very happy after the game is over.

because it's a home game for the Chiefs, and because it's the Season Opener, I'm guessing the team and the crowd will be pumped more than usual

I think it’s going to be a fairly low-scoring affair, similar to last year’s game between these two teams, especially with a loss of significant time for all teams in the league with the CBA mess, and Defense is usually ahead of Offense early on in the year of any given season as it is … I’m guessing that’s going to be the case this year even more so

First – get a new Bills helmet picture.

Second – Is the Cassel throwing arm injury significant? Latest reports I heard was that it was essentially nothing.

Year two is upon us.

by Buffalo for Eternity on Sep 4, 2011 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Cassel's arm is just fine ...

we’re worried about his ability to read more than his primary WR on any given play … also worries about the OLine, we’ve had some turnover there (by choice and by chance) so it’s going to be some time before they play with the “cohesion” that many veteran OLines do

we were already down our #1 Draft Choice for a few weeks (WR Jonathan Baldwin) and now find out that our best TE, Tony Moeaki (who had a very nice rookie season last year) is on IR and gone for the year … we’re not so talented and deep that we can afford to lose weapons like those lightly

and sorry about the helmet … I had no idea (and thanks also to DJ O below) and I’ll see what I can do to find a new image (and I was so proud of making that helmet to helmet faceoff, too)

If you don’t know, we went back to our white helmet full time. No more red.

What strikes me right off the bat are

1\. You now have our Bills schedule from last year. We played each of those teams u mention. Good luck with that.
2\. Are people really comparing Charles to Sanders? Haven’t heard. That’s quite a stretch IMO.
3\. Which ever team has time to throw, I predict they are the victors. Both defenses will be hard to run on ( yes, i said it, our front 7 will be formidable, especially since healthy).

Therefore my question to you is, who are your pass rushing threats? And how does Romeo like to bring pressure?

heh, we're going to need all the luck we can get with this brutal schedule ... thank you!
You now have our Bills schedule from last year. We played each of those teams u mention. Good luck with that

oh, the Charles to Sanders thing was a tidbit off the top of my head … Barry was unique, though Charles does favor him in being VERY fast once he finds his hole or hits the end of the LoS, he’s not a power back by any means, he’s FAST … if he plays at a very high level for the next 5 years, then maybe … MAYBE … we can honestly compare him to some of the great RBs in history … not yet, though, not yet (but hey, it’s nice to dream!)

Charles is out running thrreat, though it looks like this yer Dex (dexter McCluster) will see more touches from the backfield, and certainly as an outlet/option for Cassel if his WR’s are covered … we signed free agent Le’Ron McClain from the Ravens at FB, he’s likely our goal line threat (or at least a very good decoy) … fewer touches by Thomas “The Enforcer” Jones

Crennel brings pressure with LBs and Secondary, and he’ll bring it from anywhere on the field on any given play … he likes to confuse the QB, mix it up, use different looks, show pressure on occasion and drop back, more often not show pressure and bring the house .. we have rookie LB Justin Houstin, last year’s standout LB Tamba Hali and a Secondary that’s fast and tough (Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis) … Hali is our main threat to put pressure on the QB

if your front 7 is that tough then yeah, I’m concerned … and worried too about Detroit next week, that’s another up-and-coming young team with a much improved front 7

Charles was the best rusher in the league last year, hands down

he gets about 100 less carries than other top RBs yet out gains them. 6.4 YPC that’s insane. I always thought the Chiefs weren’t certain he could carry a full #1 RB work load so it seemed they held him back on purpose, meanwhile Thomas Jones average 3.7 yards per carry behind the same line. If Charles gets over 300 carries and stays healthy, I’d bet money he hits 2000 yards. 6.4 YARDS PER CARRY!!!!

And I’m crossing my fingers I get a top 5 pick in my fantasy draft to take him

by BillsThickNThin on Sep 5, 2011 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that you made the comparison, but...

I’d say if Charles lives up the the level of production Priest Holmes did, things would be good for the Chiefs.

Some Thoughts

As a Bills fan and as brutal as we have been in the recent past I have never ruled them out of any contest regarding home field, superior talent, franchise QB’s or whatever. We have our good games and our bad games but the majority of the time we come to play. So lets consider things a tad equal going into this.

Thought One: What a game to measure how much we improved on defense against the run. Jamall Charles, Kevin Jones pounding the rock is a solid test for us and I am truly looking for a huge improvement in that statistic. We are counting on our draft picks from last year and this year to shore that aspect of our game up to acceptable level. Also, adding Nick Barnett, Kirk Morrison, having a healthy Adra Davis available and including Sean Merriman and Chris Kelsay along with Alex Carrington sealing the edges it would seem on paper that we are drooling for this opportunity.

Thought Two: Along with these young additions from our recent drafts, and to include a healthy Shawne Merriman, I can’t remember the last game we played when we had a pass rush. There have been times this preseason where the pass rush has been a delight to watch and this is without schemeing to get it done.

Thought Three: The difference in this game for me since we are at Arrowhead, which is not the first place I would want to play, but to be the best you have to compete with those intangibles. C.J. Spiller and Rosco Parrish will be two new surprises this season in Gaily’s offense. Both players your team is familiar with, but both have grown and evolved into the offense that Gailey now in is second year has been working on. Both are talented and extremely fast.

Final thought: The Bills are not the same team as we were last year. We still need to learn how to win games, play the entire game, not just portions of it. We are very young at skill positions and will be fielding developmental and former practice squad players from other teams. We do not see this as an excuse, many of those players are ready for this opportunity. This is probably a better game for us Bills fans than your Chiefs. Don’t take us lightly, we won’t be taking the chiefs lightly.

Oh yes one last thing, Stevie Johnson will drop a pass or two, inbetween burning Berry for a couple scores:) I read the post on your site about a month ago, your community was having a tad too much fun over Stevie’s drop against the steelers. He is someone to consider on our offense.

Bills/Chargers fan

As a Buffalo ex-pat currently living in San Diego my opinion is this. The Bills fan in me sees this as a tough match-up versus two (hopefully) rising teams. God knows the AFC could use a changing of the guard at the top of the conference. The Chargers fan in me tells me you are the enemy and must be destroyed! Really though, I have never disliked the Chiefs and have always had respect for KC as a great NFL city.(plus..yea who can hate a city that can BBQ like you guys do) I look forward to this match-up, and regardless of who wins, I also look forward to watching these two teams remain competitive for years to come.

Hey Atmtn -

Had a question for you: How much does Weis leaving hurt the system? Does it impact Charles, Cassel in any significant way from what you’ve seen/heard during the preseason?

by T McGee on Sep 4, 2011 9:19 PM EDT reply actions

it's UP a mtn (sort of a "heads UP" there) ... :-)

well, preseason THIS year was brutal, but then under Haley they’ve all been brutal and ugly … I don’t think that it’s going to make too much difference, though I could be wrong … as long as Haley and Muir (new OC promoted from OLine Coach) keep Cassel on the same style of play as last year … a short 3-step drop and hit the primary read

in addition, we signed Jim Zorn as QB Coach and he’s been helping quite a bit from what we’ve seen and heard, so my guess is there won’t be a drop-off in Cassel’s play as it’s related to play-calling itself

good question!

Ok, upamtn...

If you’re Kansas City, how are you beating Buffalo? What’s your game plan?

And vice versa…

I like to believe this has more to do with the Bills players feeling like they can be something special. They started a year 0-8 and finished 4-4 while taking playoff and championship game bound teams to OT and 3 pt nail biters. All this with one year under a new coach and with a young roster. Im sure they can feel what they are capable of. -poz

by RBbills on Sep 4, 2011 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

score more points than the other team (yeah, I'm generally a smartass on a lot of things)

seems like the Bills are going to make the Chiefs beat them with the pass … if the Bills stack it up front to stop the run that SHOULD leave some passing lanes open … we have Bowe, Urban (who’ll be starting opposite Bowe until our #1 Draft Pick Baldwin recovers from a broken thumb) and Steve Breaston (formerly with the Cards) in the slot … we lost Moeaki for the year, but have a very good blocking TE in Pope, and McCluster in swing/outlet passes if needed as well … if I’m Haley, I’m going to be aggressive on the passing game from the start, soften up the Bills Front 7 and keep ’em honest, force them to honor the pass and open it up some for the running game

for the Bills to win, they’re going to have to establish a running game to keep the KC LB’s and Secondary from cheating too much on the passing game … we run a base 3-4 and Crennel’s defenses are usually a “bend but don’t break” that take chances, esp on the passing game with a lot of hidden blitz packages … two of the best CB’s in the league in Flowers and Carr, and both FS and SS make our base Secondary one of the best in the league … Bills will have a difficult time moving the ball thru the air unless they can get it going on the ground first

just my thinking, I could be wrong

Here's mine...

Just read a report that Cassel may have a cracked rib and might not play the first week. With losing Moeaki and possibly even Cassel for this game, don’t you think that would be a major blow to your team? I’m not really sure who your back up is, but I have to believe that would impact your offense incredibly. What are your thoughts on that?

by joe r on Sep 4, 2011 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, saw that little rumor ... hoping Cassel can play, if not it's gonna be a long, long day and then some for KC

just losing Moeaki for the season is a blow, on top of having Baldwin sidelined for a couple of games as well already … our OLine has NOT looked good in preseason but I’m chalking that up to a typical ugly preseason for the team under Haley and not too worried about it … YET

if Cassel can’t go Sunday look for Tyler Palko to start and a VERY conservative game-plan, which is likely not what they want or need to win this game … have to see how it goes this week, and I’m sure a lot of us will be wondering what veteran QB’s are available for hire … it’s also possible that even if Cassel does have a cracked rib he can play with a flak jacket under his jersey

definitely something to keep our eyes on as the week progresses …

Gambler

Love to cap football games. Analyzing this game as a gambler (and a Bills fan) i see this game staying under the total of 40.5 with the Bills wining outright. I will say we win 20-16.

Under is 8-1 in the last 9 meetings
Under is 15-6 in KC last 21 games in September
KC are 1-7 ATS in their last 8 vs. AFC
Under is 10-3 in BUF last 13 games in Week 1
BUF are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 vs. AFC

Just a couple of questions

Being from sw Arkansas I got to see Dorsey, and Jackson play for LSU quite a bit. How are they progressing in KC?

I know you guys have some quality CB’s for #1, and #2, but we will be running a lot of spread at you. Two good CB’s cant cover our four good WR’s. How is your CB depth? Will this affect how much your defense blitz’s from the S position?

We have pretty good depth at the cb position. Arenas seems to be a solid 3rd CB and rookie Jalil Brown should contribute as well. Then we also have Berry and Lewis at the safety position. Currently the dback position is probably the most talented group on the Chiefs.

I'll take a crack at your questions

In my opinion, the deck was stacked against Dorsey early on. We went from a 4-3 to a 3-4 from his first to second year and he had to make the adjustment. Since then, he played very well and actually was one tackle away from leading the league in tackles at the 3-4 DE position.
Jackson… well… yeah… He’s a different story. Lets just say that we’re all still waiting for the lights to come on. He’s shown flashes last year (before and after his injury) and again in the pre-season. The problem with both Dorsey and TJax is they’ve been learning to play their position in a system the relies heavily on the NT. Problem is we really haven’t had a TRUE NT. So, in essence, these two have been learning how to play the position more in theory than in practice. THANKFULLY, that changed this offseason when we signed Gregg and drafted Powe. Both have shown up great in the preseason and it finally looks like Dorsey and TJax have the right setup around them.
Electing to target our secondary is probably not what I would advise. Running the spread would (in my opinion) play into our hands because it allows us to put our best unit (secondary) and all or best pass rushers (Gilberry, Hali, Houston, Arenas, Berry) on the field at the same time and, as you can see the pressure will be brought from every level of the defense. Our pass defense ranked 23rd last year in yards last year. But don’t let that fool you. The reson why people rave about Hali’s ‘motor’ and how he is ‘relentless’ is because he takes a while to get to the QB and he’s alotted that time due to the coverage downfield. In other words, in recent years our secondary has had to constantly make up for our passrush and is left to cover for 3-4 seconds almost every pass attempt. The change this year looks to come from Houston (2011 draft) and Scheffield (2010 draft – out for the season but has made a successful and impressive come back). These two add a great element to our pass rush and that will complement our secondary beautifully.

Last year, the Chiefs kind of came out of nowhere behind their second year head coach and won the AFC West championship. Buffalo’s rhetoric tends to put off expectations of ever winning for sometime in the distant future (talk of five year plans are outdated in my mind), so my question is, how did Kansas City pull off such a rapid transformation? I’m really hoping Buffalo looks at Kansas City’s season last year as inspiration for 2011.

horribly weak schedule, team focus, lack of major injuries and good, old fashioned luck

add it all up, along with the Chargers getting off to a very slow start and losing the Cin game, and the Raiders winning every game in the division BUT losing games against less talented teams and you have a division winning formula

I think the Bills are on the same path as the Chiefs, but last year was odd … we swept the NFC West (big deal, huh!) and took care of what we HAD to (even if just barely, such as the Bills v Chiefs game in OT) … it was enough, just barely enough in a division with no other clearly great teams

You have to cook the lobster slowly, otherwise it’ll be tough and flavorless. I’d actually roast the lobster separately and fold it in near the end, allowing the lobster’s delicate flavor to shine through letting the cavity’s strained residual juices perfume the soup base.

Oh wait…you were joking.

Look out for the Bills Defensive Line.....

I see that some of you have concerns about your offensive line. How do you think they will stack up against pro bowl nose tackle Kyle Williams, #3 overall draft pick Marcel Dareus and rejuvenated 3 time pro bowl LB Shawne Merriman? Can Cassel throw to win because the Bills now have a much stouter run defense? Will your team be ready for a Bills team prepared to get much more physical than what you saw last year?

right now just about anything more fomidible than cardboard has me concerned ...

think it would be possible to ask Chan to use lifesize cardboard cutouts on Sunday, instead of real, actual players? all Chiefs fans would greatly appreciate it :-)

The player I would like least at #9 would be my sister’s cat, Captain Creamsicle. She does have a great work ethic and agility, but I’m really concerned that at 9 lbs., she’s too small to play safety in the NFL. She also bites way too often on play action and is easily distracted by someone waving string in the crowd. Lastly, her wonderlic score was pretty awful, answering "meow meow meow" for most of the questions- Dr. Brackish Okun

More stout on paper. Remember that Williams has been a part of the team through all those seasons of poor run defense. Dareus is a rookie, and Merriman is a wildcard. I need to see this improvement during the regular season before I say there is one to observe.

I don’t know if that makes things better. It’s well-known that teams needed only to run on them and that when pressed into passing situations, the Bills gave it up in spades.

Chiefs FF question

A little off topic here, Up, but I play in a 14 team FF league with a defensive roster. I’m wondering if Arenas will be returning kicks and punts this year, or if that will fall to someone else? Thanks in advance for the help…

not at all OT, Pari

unofficially it looks like this, as per the latest depth chart posted by our own Chris Thorman of Arrowhead Pride … Arenas is definitely in the mix, but no guarantees of how much of the load he’ll handle

PR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Steve Breaston, Jerheme Urban, Donald Washington

KR: Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Steve Breaston, Donald Washington

I've been a Bills fan ever since I was a kid

but I’ve always had a soft spot for the Chiefs. We’ve got a lot in common: Cold weather AFC teams, a lot of history, way too many underwhelming seasons in recent years… and of course, VERY loyal fanbases.

Having said that… I hope Kyle and Merriman make a nasty Cassel sandwich on Sunday. =P

Cassel overated

I am a Bills fan in Boston where I believe Cassel is a bit overated. I do not see him as that much better than Fitz. Would he survive behind the Bills OL? I still give the Chiefs the edge here based soley on the fact Buffalo has yet to turn the corner when it come to winning winable games.

by rowlet on Sep 6, 2011 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

Wow

Fitz vs Cassell, no worries here, its a wash/wish. Surviving our O/L is why Fitz is starter, he can think quickly. Cassell will be stymied by resurgent Bill’s D. Bill’s win! Corner turned!

Hey, win or lose we'll look better in our new uniforms! Go Bill's!
