2012 NFL Mock draft

This is my first fan post for the my beloved but frustrating Bills. I would like to introduce myself just a little bit, so you the fan, can know a little bit of the writer. My name is Raul Jimenez and I have been a Bills fan since the days of Drew, Holcomb, J.P., and Trent. I have seen it all from the Bills from the last second field goal on Monday Night football against the Cowboys to the fumble by J.P. that was ran back by the Jets to win the game. Well this mock draft is for a new year, new talent, and a better ending then this year.

Star-divide

This draft years going to impact the team a lot. These key players we will benifit in a great way:
1stR: Courtney Upshaw OLB Alabama-A very aggressive OLB, with a high motor. This man is a beast. What I love the most, just like Dareus, he's Alabama disciplined. Its considered a bit of a reach because he struggles a bit with pass coverage. But you can notignore his talent for getting after the Qb.

2ndR:Brandon Jenkins, OLB/DE, Florida State-Pass rush! Pas rush! Pass rush! We need it, and Jenkins brings it. Some may argue, due to the fact we are 3-4, may say he wont fit our scheme. But most fail to realize that we are hybrid. We dont need to set the edge on passing situations. What we need is pressure!

3rdR:Jarius Wright, Wide Receiver, Arkansas -Very underrated sure handed receiver. That is very shifty and a good route runner against man to man coverage. Not a lot of media attention because of inconsistency at QB.

4thR:Levy Adcock, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State- Adcock ended on a high note with an impressive game against Oklahoma and defensive end Frank Alexander. Alexander was shutdown by Adcock, and Oklahoma State rolled their rival. He may be best at right tackle or possibly guard at the next level.

4thR(from Ravens trade): Lonnie Edwards, G, Texas Tech depth, depth, depth! As we saw this past season, you can never have to much depth.

5thR:Chris Rainey, Slot WR/PR/KR-Like Nix always said you can never have too many playmakers. We all know Rainey has speed and versatility. He can be our new Roscoe Parrish. But healthy & younger of course. I personally believe this the steal of the draft.

6thR:Jerry Franklin, Inside Linebacker, Arkansas-Franklin has totaled 93 tackles with 10 tackles for a loss and four passes broken up. He has been quiet in a lot of big games this past season though. But he has a nose for the football and gives us depth.

7thR: Greg McCoy, CB, TCU- For 2011 he had 36 tackles, 7 pass break ups, and 2 picks. Like i said we need depth!

Tell me what you think Bills fans!

I like your way of thinking with your first two picks

but I don’t see Nix taking a player like Wright and then a similar player in Rainey. I think if we do draft a WR he will be at least 6’2" Nix wants a Calvin Johnson type, not so much a slot, we have Nelson who plays that. They are going to draft an OT as Nix said, but I don’t see them taking 2 OL, and Nix has stated he wants to draft Tackles because it is easier for them to play guard, than a guard to play tackle. I am also thinking they will take a CB in the first 4 rounds, at least, maybe earlier. But overall I like your way of thinking position wise, I just don’t know much about the later round players.

You are now Watching The Throne.

Jenkins is headed back to FSU

But I like the sentiment of getting pass rush early.

I’m not too keen on Upshaw at 10. If we’re looking for our pass rusher I’d rather go Melvin Ingram because of his superior athleticism.

If available I’d take (assuming no QB)
Reiff / Martin / Floyd / Jeffery / Ingram / Kirkpatrick
before taking Upshaw.

Da'Jon McKnight - WR, Nick Toon - WR, Marvin McNutt - WR, Dan Persa - QB, Russell Wilson - QB, Whitney Mercilus - DE, Melvin Ingram - DE/OLB, Jared Crick - 3/4 or 4/3 DE, Alshon Jeffery - WR, Michael Floyd - WR, Ryan Tannehill - QB

yeah i umm, dont think very highly of this mock

ive been loud in my opinion against taking courtney upshaw at pick #10. good football player, not a top10 (or 15) draft pick in my opinion.

brandon jenkins is staying in school, that being said i assure you he wont be the bills second round pick

jarius wrights a good player, but he doesnt meet the nix height requirement. if nix uses a premium pick on a receiver (which odds are that he will), its going to be a guy with size and strength. i think we can count on that

adcock at the top of the 4th round would be an absolute steal. i cant see him falling that far, though

ya, you can never have too much good depth. the bills problem has been too much poor depth. ive never once seen lonnie edwards considered a legit NFL prospect anywhere, and the idea of the bills trading lee evans for a backup guard that probably cant make this team is kind of alarming.

rainey makes some degree of sense assuming they cut roscoe parrish loose. but again, i think that 5th round pick is too high for him- there will be significantly better players to be had at that draft pick

bills need to target a linebacker at some point, nix himself said that. franklins a decent player who would have a shot at the roster i suppose, but once again, i think your taking an undrafted/7th rounder before you need to

youre missing a 6th rounder for marshawn lynch

much like edwards, ive never seen anyone that considers mccoy a real NFL prospect. besides that, cornerback is a position they need to fortify a lot earlier than the 7th round.

i think this draft would ultimately do more harm than good

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

by boomsauce on Jan 12, 2012 9:41 PM EST reply actions

if i might add: i didnt realize there was only two choices for the bills first pick. i dont see why CB or QB or OT in particular wouldnt also be in play…

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

by boomsauce on Jan 12, 2012 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Good thinking

But Upshaw is the sure thing, no argueing in that. after the 5th or 6th pick the talents drops. besides Reif, what quarter back or corner has the value of a top ten pick???? From what i seen on film, position rankings from 74 different websites, and the post season interview of Buddy Nix. I dont see why not have a similar draft.

by RaulJ on Jan 12, 2012 9:53 PM EST up reply actions

but what does that mean: “sure thing”? id be shocked if upshaw didnt turn into a pretty good pro football player. “pretty good” doesnt really cut it from my point of view with a top10 pick. i dont think upshaws a game changer in the pros. in my mind hed be a slight upgrade over chris kelsay on this bills defense. at pick 25? ok, id consider that. but at pick 10? id like them to aim higher- even if it means taking on more risk.

out of curiosity, did u really chart the rankings of all these prospects from 74 different sites? i gotta be honest i find that kind of difficult to believe. either way it doesnt change any of my opinions up there

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

by boomsauce on Jan 12, 2012 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

Love your opinion

But Like I said the talent drops off big after the 6th or 7th pick. Nix doesn’t trade up or down so why not? Floyd? Off field issues, maybe Jeffery? A good pick besides Upshaw Riley OT. 74 different opinions isn’t alot considering going back from December till now. But I made this for your opinions and yours is just as valid as mines. In the end all we wanna see are more Ws in the win column n the playoffs

by RaulJ on Jan 12, 2012 11:23 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Love it

This draft would address all of our needs in sequential order. Jenkins will be a stud if he adds weight at the next level. Upshaw needs technique work instead of just trying to “dominate” (like he says in every interview (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing)). Dont know much about Wright or Edwards but Adcock and Rainey would be steals where you have them. All around this draft would produce about 3 or 4 contributors/ starters which would be excellent

by baduszk122 on Jan 12, 2012 11:08 PM EST reply actions

Agree with boomsauce, after watching some film on him, I just don’t see the playmaking ability. Granted he will be a solid pro, just not a game changer. He is very slow out of the gate and I really don’t see pass rushing ability needed at the next level or worthy of No 10.

I like any 3 of the top WR here at 10. Lets face it, SJ is good, but we need a big target. Also maybe Vontaze Burfict, he seems to have a bad wrap, but man is there potential there. Guy Iooks like the water boy in some of his videos!!!! Also like the look of vinny curry in the 2nd. I wouldn’t be opposed to dropping back and picking up a couple more in the 1st either.

by usandthem on Jan 13, 2012 8:29 AM EST reply actions

The bills should be looking for the Aldon Smith of the Draft, not sure who that is, but should be the aim.

by usandthem on Jan 13, 2012 8:47 AM EST reply actions

I like the first two picks especially!

you got a good linebacker and a pass rusher – definitely two of our biggest needs!

by BuffaloWhiner on Jan 13, 2012 10:28 AM EST reply actions

Jenkins

IS going back to school

by fanick82 on Jan 13, 2012 11:27 AM EST reply actions

If it's true about Jenkins

It’s been said in a lot of draft mocks that Vinny curry DE would be available near the beginning of the 2nd round

by RaulJ on Jan 13, 2012 1:46 PM EST via mobile reply actions

its true.

curry is more of a straight 4-3 DE. i happen to be a whole lot higher on him than jenkins anyway. currys a darn good player

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

IMO

Mario Williams of the texans will be an UFA is he is not resigned and that could be someone we look at in FA for a elite pass rusher.

Ay Ay Ay Ayyyyy

by BuffaloBillsBigestFan on Jan 13, 2012 3:50 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, hate to break it to you, but Williams will very likely not be a Bill, ever, unless his career goes up in flames and he makes a desperate attempt to regain his success in Buffalo

Kenny Powers is back!

by atlantalove on Jan 13, 2012 4:13 PM EST up reply actions

If they franchise him we could also offer up a 1st and a late round pick for him. The Texans already have 4 good LBs without him and they could fill an area of need by trading their (expensive) excess talent.

Da'Jon McKnight - WR, Nick Toon - WR, Marvin McNutt - WR, Dan Persa - QB, Russell Wilson - QB, Whitney Mercilus - DE, Melvin Ingram - DE/OLB, Jared Crick - 3/4 or 4/3 DE, Alshon Jeffery - WR, Michael Floyd - WR, Ryan Tannehill - QB

by NordicBillsfan on Jan 13, 2012 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

Don't get why everyone loves Upshaw

IMO he’s not a top 10 pick. He’s a mid-late 1st rounder. I’d much prefer a Kirkpatrick, Martin/Reiff, or Nick Perry (This is assuming Nix refuses to draft Tannehill)

Kenny Powers is back!

by atlantalove on Jan 13, 2012 4:12 PM EST reply actions

after the combine and everything, I would be shocked if Washington takes him(Tannehill) after losing RG3 to the Browns

this is assuming they still have a need at QB. Matt Flynn is set to become a FA. Washington could go this route.

My ideal draft

If this comes to fruition i would be more than happy.

by Jason Holodook on Jan 13, 2012 7:55 PM EST reply actions

so your dream draft involves the bills using a second round pick on someone who isnt in the 2012 draft? and forgoing their pick from the marshawn lynch trade? and using a fourth round pick on (and essentially trading lee evans for) a guy who has practically no chance to make the final roster? interesting

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

by boomsauce on Jan 13, 2012 9:01 PM EST up reply actions

On that note

Not picking a 2nd rounder (yet), you can rethink and “tweek” things a little. Which is what I would like in this mock. I do admire the “non-sexy” lineman picks. I do think the guys in the trenches really build wins, regardless of offense or defense. However, one great “sexy” pick can A: sell tickets. And B Make for a more exciting game. Therefore, I went with the flashy 1st round WR. Thoughts?

obviously this draft will not happen exactly as he made it, but an emphasis on pass rush is mostly what i want to see from chix

by Jason Holodook on Jan 14, 2012 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

Good news. With Lee Evans being ineffective and making $3.275 million (+ $1 million roster bonus due 3/17) in 2012, supposedly there is a chance the Ravens release him. Would make for a nice pick-up by Nix.

Da'Jon McKnight - WR, Nick Toon - WR, Marvin McNutt - WR, Dan Persa - QB, Russell Wilson - QB, Whitney Mercilus - DE, Melvin Ingram - DE/OLB, Jared Crick - 3/4 or 4/3 DE, Alshon Jeffery - WR, Michael Floyd - WR, Ryan Tannehill - QB

by NordicBillsfan on Jan 13, 2012 9:41 PM EST reply actions

That would be brilliant.

I think that could boost Nix’s approval rating by 10points.

i still think we need that calvin johnson type reciever. a 6-4ish 220 guy.

Could evans play the slot? and use his speed there?
