PrintIf you ask me, this afternoon's matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints is the most intriguing divisional-round game scheduled to play this weekend.
On one hand, you have the hosting upstart 49ers, coached by Jim Harbaugh, playing a smash-mouth, old-school style of football where a ball-control, power running offense and a stingy defense dominate the day.
On the other hand, you have the rolling Saints, featuring the most prolific passing offense in NFL history, the hottest quarterback in the game in Drew Brees, and bearing the burden of being just about everyone's "upset" pick to win Super Bowl XLVI.
This is going to be a fun game, folks. (Or, rather, let's hope it is. After three 17-plus-point blowouts last weekend, the league is due for a far more competitive round of playoff football.)

Saints (-3.5) @ 49ers
The Saints are loaded with offensive fire power led by Brees. The Niners have an old style defense and a offense that likes to run and pass into the seams with Crabtree and Davis. Their hope is to control the clock against the underrated Saints defense. The Saints are vulnerable on grass and a trip to the west coast is always unpleasant. The Niners return specialist Ted Ginn Jr. has to come up big to give the Niners field position and shorten the field.
Brees has so many weapons to chose from—Sproles, Graham and Colsten are his targets and he knows who to look for.

i used to want him to succeed, when he was here. I thought he played well in his final year (he had a ton of tackles, but more likely because our front sucked) but at this point, I just am tired of his antics, his jabs, and his assuming because Harbaugh, and that defense is good, that he factors in more than he really does.

There are varied rankings from what I have seen, but when you look at size
Curry definitely looks the part of an elite, athletic defensive end at 6’4" and 263 pounds. He displays a very good array of pass rushing moves, he is less effective against the run. He will likely be higher after the combine/pro days, because he just looks like the type of guy that we are looking for. he could still put on 15-20+ on his frame, and play about as well. He probably doesn’t have a TON of upside to be some beast like JPP, but he is going to be pretty solid, IMO.

but i think he will end up a 43 DT or a 34 DE. What little I saw, and from what some of my friends who follow, they wanted him before the Wannstedt signing. Now, we almost have too many guys like him.

we drafted middle 3 years hahaa. plus been signing free agents like mad. I am worried that the teams we play twice a year all have good TEs and run systems, and we are weak at OLB. Weak at best.

yeah
he would probably move outside, being the older, and better at diagnosing plays… he can assist Shepp still, who is more a MLB than anything, especially in a 43. My issue is the other LB spot, where we have no one. And the complete lack of depth. we have a roster full of MLBs, and they won’t all work in a 43. Maybe Morrison can play outside. Maybe we could have tried that at some point during this season, so we would know. Otherwise, I am not sure why we signed him at all.

Alex Smith
looks like a whole different QB. Amazing what a good system, and great coaching has done for him. Of course, as a #1 overall, he had the talent to begin with, and has had plenty of chance to learn. Continuity could do wonders for the kid.

Amazing what a good system, and great coaching has done for him.
Whats amazing is how efficient a QB can be when he is asked to game manage and not win. He averaged 1 TD per game during the season and never threw for 300 yards. The Kid is simply doing less. Don’t take this first quarter as indicative of A Smith because he’s already vastly outperforming what he did this season, which is hand-off.
I have low expectations. But high hopes.

i agree
but for this same reason, it is exactly what I think we DIDN’T do enough, this year. Fitz is better from play pass, and i don’t know why we wouldn’t use him in the “game manage” capacity, when his is not a strong armed guy, he is a smart guy, “gunslinger” (though I disagree with this tag, because really, the only thing that makes him a gunslinger is he will force the ball, less out of talent, more out of desperation.)

Graham is amazing. Too bad he is dealing with an injury, when they need him most. He really is exactly what I want for a TE. Chandler has his size, but not his athleticism. I am still a Chandler fan, but imagine a graham WITH a Chandler: and whoo hoo. haha. We haven’t had legit TEs in forever.

and they have supplemented DBs well over the last half decade. I know NOTHING about their line, but they sure do get some push, and their cover guys understand where they are supposed to be.

It looked like Harbaugh had something figured out initially, but the Saints adapted. This ain’t over.
sure would be cool to have a game still coming outta the half.
i am enjoying this game, but as I was 3-1 coming in, and picked the Saints: I expect Brees to outplay Smith. Both defenses play fast, but I am impressed by how physical SF is.

i think he expected it more outside shoulder to help him use the space on the sideline to his advantage, and it was more inside(because the defender wasn’t- so brees put it inside), and DB got to work back inside and take it away. i honestly didn’t watch it over though.

i mean, i am not “thowing it up” to Devery Henderson, and expecting him to win, like I would Colston or Meachum. Usually Drew throws to the space the defender isn’t and lets him, or Lance Moore, go get the ball. I think they could have been thinking differently there, but I trust your assessment.

but the WR didn’t seem to elevate for the ball at all…..almost like he was about to but got hit….except there didn’t seem to be any contact….either way, good play by Brown.

so they erased the deficit basically? this is the type of game i love. I wish we could see this kind of QB play (both) and defense (more niners) in ALL our games next year. I think switching defenses (again) is going to hurt the early part of the season. I hope not, but i expect maybe.

I really dislike everything associated with the University of Michigan.
But wow, Harbaugh is really an amazing coach ( I know, stating the obvious), much respect for what he’s done this season and most likely his future as a HC. Also, there’s one scUM player I’ve grown to like, that’d be Charles Woodson, love him as a player. Just a rant.

I can’t help but like them some, because guys I wanted as first rounders (namely Willis and V Davis and even Crabtree) ended up going there… and they sure do play the type of football I like. I don’t love the west coast offense, but well, where better to run it than SF, right?

HATED Woodson when he was at Michigan but hes definitely grown on me since going to the Packers. Great player and seems like a class act.
IDK if i would go so far as class act
after watching him get mad and punch a guy in the gut this year. granted, things get emotional on the field.. but a class act doesn’t do that. He likes to hold, and then claim contact on the WR pretty regularly too. He grabs their arm and then when they push back, he makes a big stink about it, and usually gets the flag. Sometimes, they realize, it was him. So, could be 50/50 for all I know, but it reminds me so much of how, for example, Wilfork plays; Cheap. I don’t like it.
He is an amazing player, and ridiculously talented, so I am still a fan… I just don’t know that he fits in with guys who play fair, and are legitimate class acts. Idk.

by niners only bringing 3 man rush plenty, the blitz is less obvious, and on top of that, there are more defenders waiting to jump those routes. they could be running more, IMO. i mean, didn’t they just draft a heisman winner to RB in the first? i used to want him to succeed, when he was here. True but pressure is the equalizer. Getting it and the ability to avoid it are key. Defenses and QBs are key. The Bills have nothing but question marks on both fronts.

Unlike the 49ers, our “time” will take several years (according to the “plan”). The 49ers should not have been able to accomplish what they have in less….they apparently didn’t know it takes 5+ years. And, with a rookie HC no less…beginners luck! Everyone knows it takes a seasoned genius to get you there. The 49ers ruined the curve for the “experts” who know these things.

But I mean we all took the moral of the story as being you don’t need an elite QB to get into the playoffs and win, and that a better pass rush can disrupt an elite QB like Brees, right?
So, we should be able to keep Fitz (who has got to be at LEAST Alex Smith good), add a WR for him and build the pass rush (to get in the face of guys like Brady), and be a much improved team….right?

Smith threw 5 INTs/445 attempts in 2011 vs. Fitz’ 23/569. That equates to 1 INT every 89 attempts for Smith. Fitz was 1 for every 24.7 ATT, or more than 3X worse.
So, if you’re talking accuracy, then, no. Plus, Smith was #9 in passer rating and Fitz #22 out of 34 QBs.
Cannot agree with you. We’d have had a different season, if Fitz was “at least as good” as Smith, statistically.

Of course you’d have seen a better year if Fitz had better stats. But not because he had better stats, but because the better year would have bore out better stats. I’m say Smith has, for years, underachieved.

As a whole, his numbers are much more in tune with Fitz currently. You can’t compare his very good year directly with Fitz this year, because they aren’t the same team. What you can suggest, however, is that given a better team around him (particularly a pass rush which would help the D) you could see a dramatically improved Fitz in the stat department. Alex Smith wasn’t asked to come from behind all year, or throw 30 times a game. Granted, in the Buffalo Offense, Fitz will always throw more than Smith will throw-but if they weren’t behind as often, and maybe if he had a Vernon Davis type target out there, he’d have the same type of success (not statistically, necessarily, but in the W-L column).

If you’re not down two scores, you aren’t throwing as often. There are less obvious passing downs. Blitzes and double covers don’t happen as much. You can run the ball a bit more. Anything that puts him at ease back there is bound to help his completion percentage-or at least give him the chance to.
I agree there is no direct correlation though. It just affords him, hopefully, a better opportunity.
