New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos GameThread - NFL Divisional Playoff

Last weekend, the only advancing team that needed to win in dramatic fashion was - of course - the Tim Tebow-led Denver Broncos. Their 29-23 overtime triumph over the Pittsburgh Steelers served as the only entertaining game of wild card weekend - unless, of course, you're a fan of the Texans, Saints or Giants.

It's likely that Tebow and the Broncos will need more theatrics to win a second consecutive playoff game, considering they're taking on the AFC's top-seeded New England Patriots this evening. It's not that the Patriots are indomitable - they've lost their last three post-season games, including two at home - it's that Tom Brady and New England's passing attack is so prolific that Denver may struggle to keep up, despite how Tebow shredded the Steelers last week.

Either way, this is a Bills blog, so it's hard to root against a team playing the Patriots. Go Broncos, right? Yep. Go Broncos.

So, RealTruth....

I really thought we might get lucky on our Saints line, I thought San Fran would send it to OT, then maybe the Saints would do a TD walkoff in OT for the cover, but alas, no go. Now, you look very smart betting with your head taking the Pats, instead of me betting with my heart/ the almighty Tebow and taking Denver.

Maybe, I remember in the Tebow draft documentary,

the Broncos really wanted Demaryius with their first pick and seemed determined to trade back into the first round (22-29 range, something the agent said “every team in that range had been contacted by Denver”) which lead to the 23rd pick being Tebow.

One thing though,

hard to say

that is his thing. he is the offensive archetype guy… we have no idea what the overall vision was. Fox has done well, but if you recall, Tebow was starting at the end of last year, and was having some success at certain things. They wasted half a season of game experience, and transitioning, and could have had an easier ride. BUT- they made it either way, so kudos.

maybe

but he was too talented to fall that far. He went at 22, right? He reminded me of Hakeem Nicks at the time, because I wasn’t that familiar. I have followed him since, thinking McDaniels was dumb to dismantle that team (cutler/marshall) but: I rather have Thomas than Marshall, and I have never been a Cutler fan anyway, so I am ok with the whole thing. Prob why he is getting the opportunities still. he will be a HC again in the not so distant future.

my buddy is a huge ND fan, and was all about it… I told him no way, wasn’t going to happen. Now, though, I would be more inclined, especially being as we are in desperate need of a #2 (if not a #s 1,2 and 3…) and with the signing of Lee, it seems a great time to let him teach up the new guys, with Fitz having established knowledge to help them translate and see, and then we might have some serviceable guys.

Thigpen had one mediocre year ever, and most of what i see, is TERRIBLE…

and we have one WR as a QB, who might be learning some wildcat from the master. SO…. now would be an awesome time for a good backup, and a young developmental QB.

that is stupid, to take that risk, in a blowout playoff win, before the AFC Championship game, when you already had the undefeated record in a previous season, and won super bowls…. etc. there aren’t many milestones left. why not let other guys play? risk of injury to someone else? Stay the course, with the best players, and they always stay on the same page? while the option has certainly worked in the short term, the last three games of the season and then again this game has proved that it won’t work. He needs to play like a modern QB. If he can’t he won’t be anything more than an H-back like people projected him to be before the draft.

you obviously feel fitz is more consistent, than i do. probably the difference here. Tebow played from the spread at the end of last season:

he ended the season with 5 TDs, 3 INTs and 6 Rushing TDs. he is a RB playing QB for sure, but that doesn’t mean he CAN’T do it.

Remember, Fitz is in year, what, like 8? Tebow, year 2, and he started games as a rookie, and earned his keep, once he got the job this year. Fitz SHOULD be better than he is, but that aren’t that far apart.

ok

but Fitz does not have the Denver defense that Tebow has. Totally different scenarios. Fitz had to force a lot late in the season (Tebow was lucky and while he was sputtering the game was still close), and in the process proved he cannot be a franchise, elite QB. But we still know he can be good.

You are now Watching The Throne.

by tomcs on Jan 14, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

that is valid for sure

and my very own view… all circumstance related. for sure. that said: fitz is just as likely to throw high, or low or really anywhere, anytime, on the whole field, regardless of where he intends to put the ball. His weakest part of his game is his feet. Tebow’s strongest is probably his feet. If pushed into “pocket passer” more and more: in 6 years, Tebow could certainly be > Fitz.

Totally disagree

Fitzpatrick can actually play the modern style QB. While he doesn’t have great arm strength or great accuracy he is still good. Much better than Tebow. I thought the Bills game against Denver proved that.

You are now Watching The Throne.

by tomcs on Jan 14, 2012 10:23 PM EST up reply actions

i suppose you can see it that way

i see inaccurate guys, who move around, and escape pressure, and are just likely to put one high, or in the dirt, or in the defenders hands. tebow is younger, faster, and has a stronger arm, and more dynamic personality. Fitz has a quiet calm… but to try and compare them directly, while they do two wholly different things is maybe unfair. Tebow could maybe victimize guys when some spread was worked in, a la Cam, if he can learn to throw. he has already improved after only a couple seasons. IMO.

by ThaRealTruth on Jan 14, 2012 10:26 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

yea your point that he could develop more is

definitely valid. We also know Fitz is not very accurate. and also week 2, when fitz throws the TD pass to win the game, his scream was not very quiet or calm… haha. But I cannot agree that Tebow is just as accurate as Fitz. Fitz has had games where he was terrible. and games where he was great, very accurate. Tebow has never been accurate.

You are now Watching The Throne.

by tomcs on Jan 14, 2012 10:29 PM EST up reply actions

Fitz has a higher completion percentage

but he also has had way more all around production. so, again, i just don’t feel that Ryan is accurate, even if he is more accurate than tebow, so, they are equally inaccurate, to me. maybe not equally, but close enough. for me. nowhere near an Aaron Rodgers, brees, brady, etc… not even as accurate as 2nd tier QBs like ryan, flacco, schaub… etc.

ABAYARDE IS NOSTRADAMUS JUST WATCH WE WILL NOT YIEALD TO NOBODY YOUR SOUL WE WILL TAKE

by ThaRealTruth on Jan 14, 2012 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

I agree to an extent

Flacco is not in my 2nd tier of QBs. Schaub, Ryan are much better. But yes Fitz is not as accurate. IMO more accurate than Tebow though. Fitz cost us the Giants game, because of it. But then he looked great against the Pats, Raiders, Jets (the second time), etc. So he is not very consistent, but I blame a lot of that lack of consistency on being down 21-7 before the 1st Quarter is over because of poor defense, injuries etc.

You are now Watching The Throne.

1 game man?

we are arguing over 1 better game? ok. sure. maybe. but, i don’t see what it matters. 6 years is an eternity in the NFL… like long enough for Alex Smith to go from being a promising rookie, to a bust, and then to a playoff game winner, against Drew Brees, and Sean Peyton and the Saints. Yes with help, like, in the form of an awesome defense. So, I am just saying: it happens. Happened a few hours ago. For sure. I accept that Smith might be more talented: but i suppose that could be in contention, and ultimately, be proven inaccurate, and all it would take is hard work, from a hard working kid. Not beyond the stretch of potential possibilities: to me.

Oh I agree with you in 3 years he could be great.

He has the attitude, and the physical potential to be great, if he can be accurate in short passes and make good football decisions.

and the argument about the 1 game is that they lost 7-3 against the Chiefs.. Fitz would have gotten at least 2 TDs. They would have easily beaten the teams that Matt Prater had to beat. the game that is on now would be much closer.

Right now Fitz> Tebow. Maybe in 3 years Tebow > Fitz. Maybe.

meh

i want better, than either. that is where i am at. i am in no way a Fitz “hater” though, i hate on him sometimes. I truly like the man, the myth, the beard’s legend. But i don’t really think he is a REAL NFL caliber QB. I would LOVE to be wrong about that, but I expect he is an insurance policy, to ensure an easy transition for the next guy, once we have a defense, and some receivers. That is exactly what he is to me: a stop gap. That is basically the definition of what I just described.

I don't know the stats

but I am pretty sure Schaub has thrown for a ton more yards, TDs, etc than Flacco. Probably same with Ryan. I agree he is the starting QB of a playoff team with a great running back and great defense. He has played well in games, but in others he looks awful. I still think Schaub and Ryan and much better either way but I watched his game against the Jags. and they lost 12-7… So I don’t think he is very good.

by that description though

he qualifies as much as say, Roethlisberger, had he won ONE super bowl, which he still has the chance to do, this year. So, I suppose I could have chosen another, but i don’t like ben, i didn’t want to use Rivers cuz he is on my bad side for costing me my fantasy league for taking him, and his cohorts, and so: i chose Flacco. Plug in another name if you want. It is cool. I would take Flacco as our QB over Fitzpatrick. wouldn’t even blink.

For the long term

I would take Flacco over Fitz right away. But for the short term, idk. Fitz has led comebacks to win games. Flacco has the best possible scenario to succeed and he hasn’t been great. If next season I had to win as many games as possible and I had to choose between the two of them I would take Fitz. But I think Flacco will eventually be better.

You are now Watching The Throne.

by tomcs on Jan 14, 2012 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

if they both ran the same system, with the same language

and Flacco could develop rapport with our receivers (which honestly, Fitz has done well, considering how many, but in a good system, with structured routes, there is less guesswork. Chan lets them improvise, which is cool, but can lead to more mis-communications, as well as timing issues. so, if we could control all other variables, Flacco would be my choice. All that said, i think Fitz is exactly what we need, for right now, and I hope he is a clip board guy, and then maybe a QB coach or OC for all i care. i think he is a smart dude, and he embodies what i want from a QB, outside of physical skill set, where he is a little lacking both in size, or in speed, and in accuracy, and sometimes decision making (more in forcing, less in overall concepts. He throws to spots, or he tries to force stuff, when other guys are open.)

Booing injured players is classless,

but earlier I was hearing a “Tebow Sucks” chant, I gotta say, I like that. Reminds me of the Ralph on Christmas Eve, had a great time at that game. Not living in WNY anymore sucks, only games I got to see in Buffalo was that game and the greatest game I’ve been too in a while; week 3 baby!!!! I hugged over 500 strangers that day, ahh the memories. I also got to a game up in Lambeau this season, the MNF game verse the Vikes, gotta say, if you ever get the chance, go to a game in Lambeau it’s beautiful and truly a great experience.

Yup,

I was lucky this year though, the two games I got to attend in Buffalo were just truly enjoyable.

OK, this way that NE has revolutionized the TE position,

has me thinking that it seems like TE isn’t a major priority this off-season, not sure why I think that, just doesn’t seem to be getting the attention of the obvious needs, pass rush, OLB, WR, & QB. But, I like Chandler, he could be a nice compliment to a true athletic freakish TE (like Gronk, Hernandez, Jimmy Graham, & Vernon Davis and that’s just from today!!!!!), which is what brings me to the current ND TE, Tyler Eifert ( 6’6 250, pass cathing TE), the kid is just a monster, he’s going to be the best TE out of ND (since 05: Anthony Fasano, John Carlson, Kyle Rudoplh, ND is truly becoming TE U the last 6-7 years. Tyler Eifert is in the mold of a Hernandez type player. The kid is going to be a great TE in the NFL. Just how I feel the Bills need to become part of this TE revolution we’ve seen in the NFL.

well, i have been accurate, albeit incorrect in one selection

but that was the winner of the saints/niners matchup, and i still envisioned a game SIMILAR to what happened, as well as the Saints go ahead score, before the Niners go ahead score, and the subsequent NOT go ahead score…. But, i don’t count that as a miscalculation, more just an extreme example of what COULD have happened, and then did. Brady even superceded my 28 point half time score, but then, they did have a 28 point lead. so….. for what is worth… I agree with you. I think that the Packers still hold the upper hand, and it is going to take A LOT for them to let that opportunity slip away, against a team that BARELY got into the playoffs, in a division of relative mediocrity.

3-1 last week and so far 2-2, I need BAL & GB for a perfect week.

2-2?

you mean 2-0 I assume, if you still have the chance for a perfect week?

Good job though.. this whole year has been pretty difficult, the playoff games are a LITTLE easier… though I am still processing the Saints/Niners game. It was incredible.

After a nice 3-1 start in round one,

my 0-2 day was a tough one. I gotta say, the Broncos pick on my part was awful, never again going against Brady at home, in the playoffs verse a bad QB. Hope my Packers, Ravens teaser plays out tomorrow.

Clearly i’m becoming a fan of the AFC team that wins today. Please let it be the Ravens, otherwise another SB for the Pats is all but guaranteed.

Packers vs Patriots

I’d give the edge to rodgers and his receivers vs the patriots Defense

I just want the Patriots to be kept out of the Super Bowl. I mean, enough is enough already. I think the 49ers are going to go, anyway.
