Defense come April, Playoffs come 2013

I think saying that we need a pass rusher might be the most obvious statement. Yet, we NEED a pass rusher. The old adage that defense wins Championships is alive in well. 3 out of 4 teams in the Championship games this weekend have a great defense. I think once the snow starts flying, it's ever important that you have a defense that can shut down an opponent. Play seems to tighten and its more boom or bust. Unless your name is Brady.

If our drafts from the past were slightly different, this team would be ages better. I was begging for Patrick Willis back in 07, when the 49ers picked him 1 spot in front of us. Then a couple years ago I was pining for Jason Pierre-Paul. These are the difference makers the Bills need on that side of the ball. (These player's were taken at 11 and 15 respectively, so we should be able to find a play maker at 10)

We need to have, another, defensive heavy draft. We need bit time players to run Wanny's defense. Our offense is solid, and can look great when they are healthy. They look even better when the Defense is making plays. If we find someone to harass the QB, our whole team should see the benefits.

Ok. I'm done ranting. Defense isn't always the sexiest pick, but it's one that we have to get right.

It just makes sense on paper. Your Nix and you see a mid ranked offense and bottom of the barrel defense. What do you improve? I would like a big splash in FA but i have a feeling it might just be a more of the same. Hoarding our picks and trying to plug all the holes with our big board.

I was going to post the exact same thing!

What I would give for the Bills to have a Defensive front four-six like the Giants. It starts up front and always has!

If we build a great and solid defense, then even that can win in the playoffs with an average QB. If you are able to find a “Franchise QB” as well, then it will only help your cause.

Not to mention

You said 3 out of the final 4 are defencive teams, but the 4th team (NE) their defence is playing good right now and Billichek is a defensive minded guyand has that defence plating well!

Good post

I look at the Bills situation similar to SanFran’s. The offense is largely intact and if SF can win consistently with Alex Smith, mostly in game manager mode, surely we can win with Fitz. if he can cut down on the turnovers. Give him a weapon or two, and we’ll be in the top half of the league offensively. A little tinker is all we need there.

It’s the defense that needs dramatic improvement to make the team competitive and take the pressure off of the QB to do it all.

We don’t just need A pass rusher. We need SEVERAL pass rushers. We need CB’s who can cover in man. We need OLBs who can set the edge vs. the run and force plays towards our strength, the middle of the D. And, we need depth behind Barnett.

It’s not out of this world to look at the team the Bills have, and expect that with big upgrades on the defense, we can see the same type of improvement as SF gained this year. Maybe not in terms of overall record (SF benefits from a weak division) but at least when we look at compete levels. An 11-5 or 12-4 season is not out of reach if our defense has the ability to stop anyone.
