Chip Kelly

I pretty much have lost all faith in Chan Gailey as a HC that will lead us to the promised land. The biggest reason is when we kept losing game after game, was his press conferences where he said he had no answers to why it was happening. What kind of answer is that from the person who leads your team?

Chan deserves one more year, but if he can't get above the 7-9 Jauron line after 3 seasons, I think it will be time for him to go.

If that happens, there is one coach I would like to see him replaced with if Chan can't get the job done, and that is Chip Kelly.

For the purpose of full disclosure, I am a Ducks fan so my opinion is biased and I have been to Autzen many times when I lived in the west coast back in the 90s. But now that Dungy is throwing around the Chipster as the next great HC to make the move from the college ranks to the pros, I think it is time to talk about him as the Bills next HC if Chan can't get the job done better than even Jauron. I mean look how quick Harbaugh turned around Stanford and the niners and the Chipster beat Harbaugh more than not despite the fact Stanford had a QB in Luck who is supposed to be the best QB prospect since Peyton Manning :)

He's younger, he's smart, he thinks outside the box. He may have been beaten by Andrew Luck the first time, but he made him look pedestrian in the next two meetings. That tells me he learns from his mistakes real quick.

CJ could be his LaMichael James if we had him as our HC.

What I really want to know, is would my fellow Bills fans be on board with hiring Chip Kelly like me, if Chan can't get the job done next year?

To add, I like to call Chip "The Visor" because he wears a visor so often, wouldn't it be great to see the Visor take out the hoodie twice a year, year after year :)

I'm all in, Chip Kelly for HC if Chan can't get it done next year!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Chan. This team was decimated with injuries this year. And injuries at key positions. The loss of Wood and Fred were a huge blow for this offense.

I expect this team to make a big stride this season. We saw that they have the ability, now they just need the consistency. If however, next season remains the same, then I think you might have to cut the tie. As Chan says, its a production business and if you aren’t producing they will find someone that will.

That's why

I think Chan deserves one more year. But if he can’t get aboube the 7-9 Jauron line next year he needs to go. There will be no lockout for offseason preparation next year. Jauron had plenty of injuries too, but still managed 7-9 seasons, while not ever having a draft pick as high as the Bills had last year.

I think this year is make or break for Chan, do better than Jauron, or it’s time to go. You have no excuses left.

All this is true. The Bills were indeed decimated with injuries this year and injuries at key positions. And when those injuries happened, the Bills crumpled like a brittle nylon tent.

There was another team that went through the season decimated with injuries and injuries at key positions, a team which, like the Bills, have a recent history of ineptitude and playoff absence for a considerable period of time and whose division has been utterly dominated by one of the greatest teams of our era led by a legendary quarterback. Unlike the Bills, however, when those injuries came the team bore down, put their collective noses to the grindstone and won.

That team is the Houston Texans.

I think we should be less concerned about how one of the solid teams in Division I football did it and pay more attention to how a team that in so many ways is like the Bills succeeded through adversity and made the playoffs after their massive injuries while the Bills collapsed completely.

I wanted the Bills

To hire Kubiak instead of Jauron.

But I personally think Gailey doesn’t have it in him to make the Bills a winner.

I do believe with everything I have that Chip Kelly can.

He is brilliant as a football mind, smart, learns from his mistakes and a winner. I say we give Chan one more year to do better than Jauron, and if he doesn’t, throw as much money as the visor as it takes to get him to be our HC.

I couldn't rec this more

One of the reasons that Houston survived was depth.

When Mario Williams went down, they had Connor Barwin ready, a 2nd round pick from a year ago. When Andre Johnson went down, Jacoby Jones took his place, and they ran the ball more and threw to tight ends. When Foster’s ben hurt, they ran Ben Tate. The only injury they’ve struggled with was Schaub’s, and that’s only because of the weird circumstances surrounding Leinart, a capable back-up, getting hurt right after Schaub.

Buffalo hasn’t had many capable back-ups. Buffalo had to re-shuffle it’s defensive line when Kyle Williams went out. Spencer Johnson replaced Merriman. Donald Jones’ speed was never replaced.

Buffalo did have capable back-ups in Spiller, Rinehart, and Hairston. But in other areas, Buffalo is paper thin. If Fitzpatrick got hurt, Buffalo might not have won another game.

Gotta have experenced depth.

To over come injuries… that was something widely known that the Bills did not have this year after so much roster turnover. If this year was good for anything is that our depth guys got a lot of valuate experience.

ridiculous reason to lose faith

so if mid week press conferences werent a part of the nfl then you would not have lost faith?

or, if we have an eloquent coach then you would rather just get mesmerized by his words than look at the result?

i hate press conferences… they are utterly useless and exist just to keep the media busy coz the media doesnt have anything else to do… i completely support coaches like billichek who detest media… media have become cancer to the society…. they were once objective and useful… today they give more personal opinions, and cater to emotions so they sell their stuff more

What wouldn’t have made me lose my faith, was if he said, we are gonna look at the film, figure out why we lost this game, and then make changes to our future game planning, and then win. Like the Chipster would do. He lost that first game against Luck, not the next two, he made real adjustments

I give Gailey one more year to do better than Jauron or he NEEDS TO BE GONE and be replaced with a winner like Chip Kelly.

if jauron had actually won a lot here you would say, " see! he said he would go watch films and fix it and he did it!"

the only difference is jauron said he would watch film and fix it and he didnt…

my point being, it is a silly to lose faith on a coach on basis of his press conferences when the press conferences are itself a waste of a way to earn money by the media

If Jauron had won a lot, everything would be different. If Trent Edwards were made of candy and threw rocketlasers that were instant touchdowns every time, then he’d still be our QB. If Aaron Maybin wasn’t a total bitch who only wanted to pay for a big market disappointment, we’d have a dominant passrush. Lot’s of things are different in pointless hypotheticals.

now this is stretching it

like chipster woud do? really?

dont be so quick to forget lot of college coaches busted out in nfl… saban who just won a bcs championship busted out… steve spurrier, bobby petrino to name a few… just because harbaugh has had success his first season doesnt automatically make chip better than gailey

what if chip talks BS in press conference and is not able to follow it up?

by statcruncher on Jan 16, 2012 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

I am quite aware.
dont be so quick to forget lot of college coaches busted out in nfl

There are certain college coaches, who won’t make good NFL ones, and discerning the difference between the two is very hard. I ALWAYS thought Jim Harbaugh would make a good NFL coach, and judging from the niners turnaround in 1 year, I was correct so far.

While Oregon runs a gimmick offense, the reason I feel the same about Kelly is because of the defense. He knows Offense so well, that if you try to keep doing the same thing on offense, he knows the proper defense to combat it.

Stanford beat him the first time around. Chip and the ducks won the next two, despite the fact stanford had the best NFL QB prospect since Peyton Manning.

I knew Harbaugh was gonna be a good NFL HC, but not this quick. I see Kelly as an ever smarter faster adjuster than Harbaugh, so I believe if Harbaugh can make an impact so fast, What can Chip do if given the chance? Because I feel Chip is even smarter and willing to adjust quicker than Harbaugh. The Chipster is a smart guy, like better than Bellicheat smart, I would rather have Chip as my coach than Bellicheat if given a choice.

I’d give Chip 7.5 mil if that is what it takes to get him here if Chan fails next year like I think he will, Chan deserves one more year, he improved this year, but anythin less than 8 wins is unacceptable if he wants to finish his contract. Oregon is a cushy college job, we would have to pay to get Chip here if Chan cant rise above the 7-9 Jauron line..

Well, I don't think it's crazy that the Bills will look at a college coach next time...

They hired 2 talented coordinators in Williams and Mularkey who didn’t work out. They hired 2 retreads with head coaching experience in Jauron and Gailey who didn’t and probably won’t work out. Logically the next idea would be successful college coaches with no NFL experience.

Not saying this is sound logic, but its a thought process I could see being employed.

I have been thinking about this..

and I would say no for HC, and then I thought about OC. and still no. Look at his QB play. They are team that just runs a fast paced spread option. Unless he is going to drastically change his philosophy I see no reason why he could even be a good NFL OC, let alone HC.

You are now Watching The Throne.

by tomcs on Jan 16, 2012 11:27 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

I don’t think he would run a spread option, if he got an NFL job, but to know for sure, that is what an interview is for. He is really good as a defensive mind. What he did to Andrew Luck the last 2 years is amazing. The Stanford game in 2010, Luck got off to a great start, but he adjusted and started knocking him around as the game went on and started the collection of turnovers that led to picks.

The thing I love most about Chip Kelly is he is like Bellicheat where he can adjust on the fly. He isn’t so rigid where if a game plan isn’t working, he will keep trying different things, until he finds something that works. If the Ducks had a 2nd shot at LSU this year, I have no doubt the outcome would have been different the 2nd time around, because Kelly is that kind of coach where you can fool him once with a strategical tactic he isn’t expecting, but he will have an answer the next time.

I agree this is a make or break year for Chan.

And if it ends up being a break year then Chip Kelly would be very interesting. He is an offensive genius, an underrated defensive guy I think.

by NCblofan on Jan 16, 2012 11:30 AM EST reply actions

I don't think 2012 is a make-it-or-break-it season for Gailey

But if he went, I’m not interested in Kelly. The NFL is way different than college. Kelly runs a fast-break offense, and he uses cardio and crossfit to train the Oregon players to essentially outrun other teams.

That works in college, where are team like Oregon may have 10-15 more NFL prospects on their roster than the opposition.

In the NFL, that type of philosophy wouldn’t work. Kelly’s defenses are a lot like Tampa-2 defenses, where he values speed over size. That would require a revamping of the defense. Buffalo revamped their defense in 2006, and again in 2010. You can only revamp so many times before you end up with a bunch of players that don’t fit.

Offensively, he’d be fine. But Buffalo tried a speed defense before, and it didn’t work. To play a defense like Kelly’s in the NFL, you need elite front seven talent. By the time Kelly acquired that, he’d have lost enough that he’d be gone, and Buffalo’s new coach would want to revamp the roster…..

Been down that road. Stick with Gailey for five years.

If i'm not mistaken,
Stick with Gailey for five years.

He has a 4 year contract. So they will pretty much have to extend him after next year so he won’t be a lame duck coach, or cut bait.

Just because what he runs at Oregon, doesn’t mean he would run it in the NFL in terms of D, an interview is the way to find out if he wants to revamp the D, or if he can go with what is in place. I think he is angling to make the jump to the NFL in the next 2 or 3 years, and I think he is gonna be big time successful when he makes the jump. His ability to adjust possession to possession is just something I want so bad for the Bills ina HC.

OK, I'll go with four years then.

Most coaches don’t hire on and just go with what’s already in place. We’re talking about individuals who occupy one of 32 jobs available in the country. They are uber-type A males. You think anyone’s going to tell Chip Kelly how to run business if he’s hired? There’s no way he just decides to stick with a 3-4 hybrid. He’s going to run the penetration defense he’s comfortable with. Gailey did the exact same thing when he went polar opposites on defense, from a tampa 2 4-3 to a Bullough-Fairbanks 3-4.
