R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Gentlemen (and Ladies),
Over the course of the last several weeks, I've noticed some posters have gone above and beyond the community guidelines and taken a more "personal" tact in response to varying opinions.
The notion that, as a "Bills fan site", only Bills fans with a rosy, positive, outlook need comment is as wrong as those who comment that all hope is lost. Rumblers' heritage, lineage, IQ, etc. are being called into question on both sides. This is not what this should be about.
As the guidelines say, *"attack the persons' ideas, not the person"*. We don't need this.
I, for one, am not very optimistic about the state of the Bills and have some serious doubts about their direction, but, it's only my opinion. It is no better or worse than that of the Rumbler who thinks we will win the Super Bowl in '12. We all should be able to voice those thoughts without being assailed as disloyal idiots, cretins, jerks, homers, and so on- whatever your stand.
So, before you go off on someone with a comment, could I suggest you hit the preview button and read what you are about to say? Then, consider it from the reverse. How would you feel if someone used your words in a comment to you.
Finally, leave out the personal references to the marital status of someone's mother, etc. You can make your point without that.
Post with respect. Thanks.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I Would Echo This...
Honestly, things have gotten a bit hot under the collar of late. Stuff I hadn’t seen on THIS site before, but plenty of the time on other, less prestigious sites on the Intar-webs.
I do have an issue with the gloom and doom folks who feel compelled to rain on the parade of some people who ARE optimistic about the future of the Bills. But that’s neither here nor there.
and i have issue with your issue with doom and gloom folks…
you feel your parade was rained in because you are spreading optimism? from the point of view of doom and gloomers, spreading unrealistic optimism is just as annoying … it is annoying when somebody wants to unreasonably color a picture bright… it is annoying when some facts are being discarded to paint a colorful picture…
i was an realist who liked dsicussing with facts when i joined this forum… reading comments here has actually driven me to the doom and gloom faction… instead of giving sound arguments, a lot of people just want to paint a rosy picture and keep calling out doom and gloomers

And I Have Issue...
With yadda yadda yadda.
Hey, if you want to be down in the dumps about the team, that’s fine. You’re certainly entitled. What I don’t understand why on what is essentially a fan-site for the Bills, when people post something unreasonably positive, like ‘next year, Merriman will have 22 sacks!’ folks can’t simply say, ‘that would sure be great, but I just don’t see it’ instead of ‘Merriman sucks! Nix sucks for picking him up! Ralph sucks for paying him! Chan sucks for playing him! George Edwards sucks just because! We’ll be 4-12 for the next 20 years! Wah!"
I don’t get it. I know some people are just contrarians, and some are bitter, and some just depressed – maybe they had unrealistic expectations. That’s all well and good. If you want to post a long discourse on why you think the Bills will never make the playoffs while RW is the owner, I’m willing to check that out. It’s probably very interesting. Or something about Kelvin Sheppard lacking instincts on play action, great. I’d read that. But if you feel it necessary to rebut anyone who makes a positive post – however insane – by immediately posting something negative, well, I don’t know why you come to this site other than to have your little fun at someone else’s expense.*

Or, maybe some of us just are being realistic
Not being positive doesn’t mean being negative. It may be just folks calling things as they see it.
And, if polled, would be among the most optimistic on this site, from my game stories.

totally man
We are an up and coming team and thats the truth. With a solid draft and at least 2 significant signings, we have a shot at contending. Fitzpatrick needs weapons and Nix will hook him up with weapons. We have a lot of raw players on defense (Kelvin Sheppard, Justin Rogers, Arthur Moats) who I think with a full training camp, will play real nice in 2012. BILLIEVE!

And that awkwardly had nothing to do with the article…..but I speak nothing but truth.

Thank You
I’ve always thought the intelligent level of discourse at this site is one of the great things that separated it from other fan sites. I’d hate to see us devolve into the zoo that is the bills.com message board.
Also, thanks to the moderators here for keeping things sane. I’m sure cleaning up the comments is not something you look forward to doing every day.
One other guideline I like to follow is before I hit the Post button I reread my comment and ask myself if this is something I’d be comfortable saying to the persons face. If the answer is no I delete it or rewrite it.
applause for politeness
Agree things have become overly heated on here recently with name calling as such. It’s ok to vent and disagree as long as we are polite to each other. Think the key is to recognise that just because you hold an opinion doesn’t mean that it’s right or that others will agree.
As someone who is a professional analyst, in a different field, I will sometimes have to accept that however well founded my predictions and conclusions are, sometimes they are wrong because there are always unknown factors which can not be accounted for that come to bare on results. Sometimes other analysts draw different conclusions based on the same data however we don’t call each other out on it, we try to understand why we differ and look to identify ways to test our conclusions.
If anyone would like to make a counter argument against politeness I would happily and politely discuss it with you.

I haven’t noticed a lot in the last few weeks that have violated the posting guidelines. I could be wrong, but I thought I was fairly familiar with them. Have there really been that many flagable posts made?

I can’t tell you how to flag. :) If you think a guideline has been violated, flag it. The same goes for everyone. This community is smart enough to help me moderate itself, and it’s too big for our moderators to moderate alone.

Fair enough. I am fairly liberal with posting, so I basically never flag anything. Just wondering if people are seeing things that are blatantly obvious.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
That’s OK, we probably balance out. If something strikes me as an unnecessary personal attack (attacking the commenter instead of the comment) I almost always flag it and let the powers that be decide if it is out of line or not. I probably flag too much, but the level of discourse gets tricky as more and more commenters arrive.

I have fat fingers, and have been known to accidentally flag a comment when trying to rec it. Can flags be undone?
by Ian MacPersonoid on Jan 18, 2012 12:33 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
I take it you have never intentionally flagged a comment. When you do a box pops up asking for your reason for “flagging”, and it has a cancel button to bring you back to a “pre-flag” moment.
Sometimes when you “rec” a comment it appears to indicate that you “flagged” it. When you refresh the page you will see that you did “rec” it.

Here's the jist fella's
This post is already starting to get into stats / no-stats; belief in Gailey/ no belief in Gailey; doom-and-gloomers vs. optimists.
That’s not what fansince60 is talking about. It’s certainly mentioned nowhere in the community guidelines. Here’s exactly what the community guidelines say regarding the topics that have us all up-in-arms:
Trolling: This is a loosely-defined and overused term. For our purposes, trolling includes the following: relentless negativity (without substantiated opinions), baiting community members, persistent hating on one player or organizational member, relentless commenting (i.e. spamming), or any other odd behavior that the moderator staff believes crosses the line. Troll commentary will be deleted; a warning will be issued for first-time offenders, and a ban will be issued for second-time offenders.
So, if someone has relentless negativity, eg: that Chan Gailey isn’t a good coach, but can substantiate his or her opinion, that’s perfectly fine. If someone is constantly negative about a certain player, but can substantiate the argument, and the argument doesn’t attack the player personally, that’s fine as well.
Not liking the negativity, or positivity, of posters doesn’t count, especially if the poster can substantiate his or her argument.
I’m not negative. I thought Trent Edwards would develop under Gailey. I thought Maybin would develop in time. Just because you don’t like someone’s opinions, or don’t like that thy can substantiate what they write, doesn’t mean they are attacking anyone, or being uncivil. If someone is a doom-and-gloomer, you may not like it, but they may just feel they are being a realist.
Everyone that doesn’t take your position with your particular attitude isn’t wrong, especially if they can prove why they think they way they do.

Wouldn't the endless snarky comments we see from certain posters then fall under that loose trolling definition?
To me, it’s all those tired digs everytime some mentions the GM, the owner, the coach or whoever that makes reading the comments so tedious. Intelligent debate is always welcomed on a blog I would assume.
So my question is, when does the endless snark becoming trolling? When are you allowed to point out said “snarkery” to the poster without violating CoC yourself? All it seems to do is hijack posts and threads since it gets posters riled up.

You don't have to worry about it
So my question is, when does the endless snark becoming trolling?
If you think something is trolling, then flag it and let the mods handle it…..it’s that simple.

I’ll stop saying I don’t like Upshaw. My bad. I was totally unaware of what trolling actually is. Maybe I have been trolling Upshaw. Good post, a good idea for everyone to keep these things in mind going forward.
This blog is way different than any I have been to or belong to. The negativity here is sooooooooooo much different than anywhere else. As much as I don’t like a strictly negative point if veiw, I can respect it here. Other blogs are wayyy different, I don’t post on the other blogs I belong to and don’t read or respect the peoples opinions that post.
All that being said I do feel like a couple people troll here now that I know what a troll truely is, but it dosen’t matter much to me. I just ignore most of it now, the stuff that does bother me is saying Buddy Nis sucks or should be fired. I can’t stop people from thinking that but I think it is an argument without any truth or merrit behing it.

in closing
There are no better fans than us….and with that comes responsibility. We need to keep it above board. We all have the same goal and, we will disagree on how to get there.
Until we see the results in the win/lost record, we do not know who’s right. Just respect one another and one another’s opinion. It’s all good, until it’s not.

REC"D
fansince60 has got it right. I am one of the optemistic ones, and find my oppinion differs from the gloom and doomeres in most situations, but for the most part I am past that. It still gets under my skin at times (the immediate negative response to a situation when no mistake has been made yet, but they are expecting one to happen any minute) but for the most part I dont get upset about things I cant change. We are all fans of the Bills, and we need to treat each other with respect especially the members we disagree with. I come here for info on my beloved team but I read the comments for other oppinions on the matter. I enjoy both and as long as they are done with respect.
Great post!!
