Cross Dre Kirkpatrick Off The Bills List
Kirkpatrick was arrested on a marijuana related charge today.
So knowing Nix's and Gailey's previous dealing with players that have been on the wrong side of the law, particularly regarding pot, I think that it's a safe bet to say that Kirkpatrick will probably be completely off the Bills radar. I also expect his draft stock to take a big hit from this.

If he falls to 10,
and Buffalo doesnt take him because of this, then we have problems.
I hate that I love Buffalo.
If Nix was willing to write off both Lynch and Nelson (the TE), then Kirkpatrick wont even be considered.
Nix and Gailey have had a zero tolerance policy regarding any run in with the police. If you remember in 2010 when we still had Shawn Nelson, he was arrested for pot, he was immediately benched and then released within a week or two. And that’s when Nelson was finally getting healthy and Gailey was talking about inserting him as the starter.
Also this is a red flag for Kirkpatrick regarding discipline. I mean many (aka most) college stars have smoked pot, quite a few first round picks every year have had an arrest record that involves pot (most of them that’s the only thing on there). So that on its own is not a problem. The problem is Kirkpatrick not being able to show the discipline to hold off on it during the 6 month period where he will be the most closely watched in his entire pro career (aka the 6 months before the draft). That’s a serious discipline issue, which can also be a huge red flag for character issues.
To be clear I have absolutely no problem with pot, but I do have a serious problem with discipline issue (and no the two are NOT mutually exclusive). Kirkpatrick is showing signs of discipline issues, and a team like that cannot risk a very critical tenth overall pick on someone with discipline issues.

That's not how I remember the Shawn Nelson situation...
…and not what Wikipedia says either:
Nelson was suspended without pay for the team’s first four games of the 2010 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. Nelson’s suspension began on Saturday, Sept. 4 2010. He was eligible to return to the Bills’ active roster on October 4, 2010. Nelson was released by the Bills on September 3, 2011.
But regarding Kirkpatrick, it’s a tricky situation. Stuff like that can go, and has gone, either way. Teams that pass on guys who are ultimately successful look foolish even though there are legitimate concerns. Of course teams that pass on guys that flop look like geniuses, so take that as you will.

I was going to ask what history Nix and Gailey have of “dealing with pot,” but apparently Lynch and Nelson are the answer to that question.
Lynch was retained and given four games to produce, then traded while his market was still hot. Nelson stuck around for two entire off-seasons, and Gailey tried to get him a big role in the offense (see: last year’s Baltimore game).
I see zero track record with this regime that pertains specifically to marijuana.

Brian,
a little off topic here, but do we have another pick for Lynch in this years draft. A 5th or 6th?
I hate that I love Buffalo.
That has not yet been determined.

Kirkpatrick is an elite corner in this years draft
We need help at CB, especially talent like his. If he falls to 10, most likely, hes also going to BPA at that point.
I would be very upset at OBD if they passed on him just because of this.
I hate that I love Buffalo.
This incident will be a huge red flag
I’m somewhat skeptical of taking players from a program that’s had a ton of success, like Alabama or Florida, with a slew of NFL prospects. Florida had this same thing happen with Dunlap (DUI) and Hernandez (drugs) prior to the 2010 draft.
This situation means teams will have to allocate a ton of resources to see if he’s Rolando McClain, or just a kid that made a bad choice.
Re-starting the official Buffalo "Draft a quarterback in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
Huge red flag?
idk about that. Isn’t Hernandez’s nickname Chronic? they’ll have to see if it has been a habit or an isolated incident, though. Too bad he was one of the players I would be thrilled about if the Bills got.
You are now Watching The Throne.
Yes
Committing millions to someone who’s had a drug issue, however big or small, is huge.

Agreed. Just ask the Bears.

Not to steer to far aside, but wasn’t that the craziest story ever? Dude was moving serious weight, setting up like a $100 million / year drug operation. Unbelievable.
Now he’s going to need 100 million soap-on-a-ropes.

I’m not sure I would classify pot as a huge drug issue. But this is a definite issue regarding discipline (as I’ve stated above). Pot on it’s on is not that bad, so I have to agree with tomcs that any team that is willing to draft him will need to invest A LOT of time in determining if this is a habit or a 1 time incident.
Personally I’m ready to write him off entirely on the simple fact that we cannot afford any type of character issues with this pick, and this is a definite issue.

I didn't say it was a huge drug issue
But, like you said, this incident is a big deal in the NFL, particularly when Kirkpatrick stands to make $12 million, or more.
Re-starting the official Buffalo "Draft a quarterback in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
Exactly.
And as i said above, the fact that he couldn’t control himself enough during the 6 month period where he will be the most watch of his NFL career means that he has a sever lack of discipline and self control.
That alone should disqualify him from the Bills list. Add in Nix and Gailey’s views on the matter and we can pretty much guarantee that we wont draft him.

ok
I see your point. But its still early in the process still have to see how it all plays out (the draft process). I am not writing him off yet.
You are now Watching The Throne.
I unfortunately am because Of Nix and Gailey`s attitudes in previous encounters with these kinds of run ins with the law. They have zero tolerance for this type of stuff.

yea i read you other comment
and I agree. I dont know about drafting a CB that high anyway. I went them to get BPA. Brockers, Reiff or Martin, maybe Donta Hightower, maybe Alshon Jeffery. Are the players I think we should look at getting, so far in the draft process.
You are now Watching The Throne.
So youd rather take a player,
in Alshon Jeffery that has character issues, one the field and motivation issues, over a college kid, stud CB that was caught with pot?
Id argue that more that 50% of all top 10 picks have tried pot in college.
I hate that I love Buffalo.

I’m not very high on Kirkpatrick. But if Nix wanted him before and doesn’t now he has issues.
First off I do not approve of this. But I can guarantee many NFL players, including Bills, smoke occasionally. I know for fact that Troup and D-Flo are smokers.
Kenny Powers is back!
And Stevie
For the record I don’t approve of writing off a player for pot either. I’m just saying with Nix’s track record regarding run in with the and pot, I doubt that Kirkpatrick is helping himself as far a the Bills are concerned.
