Buffalo Bills HC Chan Gailey Approval Poll: January 2012
At the start of every month, we're going to poll the readers of Buffalo Rumblings on their state of mind regarding the chief decision-makers of the Buffalo Bills. This is your poll to state your pleasure, or lack thereof, with head coach Chan Gailey. Here are some stories Gailey has been heavily involved with over the last month.
- Bills finished 6-10 and were 1-4 since last poll (L 17-23 to TEN; L 10-37 to SD; L 23-30 to MIA; W 40-14 over DEN; L 21-49 to NE).
- Final offensive rankings: No. 14 overall (351.5 YPG), No. 15 passing (231.4 YPG), No. 13 rushing (120.1 YPG), No. 14 scoring (23.2 PPG).
- Final defensive rankings: No. 26 overall (371.1 YPG), No. 19 passing (232.1 YPG), No. 28 rushing (139.0 YPG), No. 30 scoring (27.1 PPG).
- Benched wide receiver Stevie Johnson in the regular season finale for his latest post-TD celebratory penalty.
- Really started to take lumps from local writers, most prominently for his handling of running back C.J. Spiller.
- Some reports indicate that Dave Wannstedt, at minimum, became more involved in defensive game-planning and play-calling near the end of the season.

I think they are slightly better than Gailey

Agreed with that...
Stevie’s celebrations are pretty innocent for the most part – I understand that in this case he directly defied the coach’s order, but Gailey could have made his point by benching him for a series.
Is Stevie a true #1 receiver? Maybe not, but he’s a talented, exciting player who actually WANTS to be here. I’ll be sick if we let this mediocre retread coach who’s probably gone after next year anyway drive him out of town.

sure he can....posting this for a 3rd time
I don’t think you can be that rigid when applying rules like this. I watched the video on BB.com too. Chan was mad, so he took it out on Stevie and used his former statement to justify it dropping the hammer. Trouble is Chan wasn’t just mad at Stevie, he was mad at the officials for flagging Stevie this time and not in Cincy…"which is it", Chan said. Chan messed up because he let his emotion get the best of him and didn’t consider how this situation was different from the situation he had in mind when he made the rule. That statement was made after Stevie’s “Plax imitation” in the Jets game and was meant to be applied to similar situations. If Stevie wouldn’t have gotten the flag, I don’t think Chan would have benched him. Why make Stevie and the rest of the players pay for inconsistent officiating? Chan could have benched Stevie for half the game and explained this to them after the game. The players are smart….they would have understood why he amended his rule, and they would have respected him more for applying some common sense to the situation. Now we have an issue that may or may not affect our ability to resign Stevie. You tell me what would have been the best course of action for this team going forward?

IMO, bench him for the half
explain at half time to the whole time why. I used to think he should be fined, but I don’t think I would do that anymore.

We really shouldn't hind sight these actions unless we know the facts prior to them.
Stevie could of been told in advance that it would be the last time for those actions and if it happened again then there would be more serious circumstances. The whole situation is pretty sad, but the team must come first and Chan I am sure is not thrilled about having to take such action.

Hindsight is the only way to evaluate decisions like this.....
Chan made this decision in the heat of the moment. It was a mistake. A mistake he should have corrected at halftime after he had a chance to think about it. Sometimes being a good coach is admitting to your players that you made a mistake…..they usually know it anyway.

Offense has improved significantly under Chan. He’s gotten to see what CJ can do. Our QB is good when we go up-tempo and have receivers. The offensive line was amazing. There were mistakes and issues adjusting but overall, the offense was good.
Defense is another issue. Players say the scheme is good but they aren’t executing. Early in the season we got some turnovers but overall it doesn’t look like any of the issues over the past few years have been addressed. The defense needs to be addressed and unfortunately, I think that means our DC needs to go.

There are still plenty of questionable calls on offense, but that happens with every team. After two years, we are light years ahead of the pop-gun offense where scoring 20+ points in a game was a miracle.
Defensively, George Edwards needs to be fired no later than today. He was clueless, unqualified, and overmatched.
by SiriusRed on Jan 2, 2012 10:54 AM EST via mobile up reply actions 1 recs
We don’t know the inner workings at OBD so to say he was clueless and overwhelmed is speculation. Did Chan / Nix tell him to stay in the 3-4? As the players said, the schemes were there but they didn’t execute. That leaves me to believe it is more talent related than DC related. The question is, was Edwards allowed to scheme for his talent or for the defensive alignment that Chan and Nix want.
Before we say Edwards is terrible, we have to know all the variables and we will never know them. The bottomline is the defense failed and someone needs to take the blame. I think it’ll be Edwards, which depending on the variables may not be fair at all.
by BuffaloFanFromCT on Jan 2, 2012 11:15 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
What do you want them to do, pull a Santonio Holmes and throw their coordinator under the bus? They are missing a pass rush, but rarely did I see Edwards try to generate a pass rush by changing up the scheme. At some point you have to understand that the offense is torching you, you might as well go after them.

Disapprove, but Gailey would make an outstanding OC
Gailey finally got around to dealing with Stevie doing what he should have done with the team two months ago. Poor performance and lack of discipline wasn’t punished, with rock bottom occurring in the first Miami game.
On the other hand, I think he used Spiller exactly right. Would love to see a RB by committee with Spiller/Jackson/Choice next year.
this season proved
he is not a genius. I hope that adjective can be put aside. The offensive game plans were repetitive and, sadly, did not mask the deficiencies of this team, despite the obvious effort to do so.
Part of that is on Buddy (for later today), but, the early abandonment of the run week in and week out whether it was Fred or CJ was inexpicable and unforgivable.
That he chose Edwards as his DC is also on him. Edwards was mediocre at best in Miami and Chan’s penchant for “familiar” faces is a fatal flaw. Add that God awful running back Choice to the nepotism list.

I don’t understand the Tashard hate. He seemed to have one role: run the ball up the middle, which he did well in a win against Denver, plus he scored a goal line TD against the Pats. Why are people so down on him?

The idea that Nespotism is present is a little silly.
Did he get choice because he is familiar with him? Sure.
But I dont think he is going to play a player he doesnt think is good just because he knows the guy.

Approve
I don’t approve of some of the things that he does (like not using RBs enough when they’re working or putting in the wrong center for an entire dang game because that’s who was used in training camp), but I do approve of how he grows from these mistakes. He holds himself accountable and tries to make changes. I think that some things that he does is too little, too late like making a hard line rule for the finale game and then putting himself in a tight position in order to follow through. I get that he has to make decisions in regard to discipline, but this seemed like the silliest possible time to do it. Why not start with sitting out a half for a penalty that hurt the team during the losing streak when it could have helped our playoff chances? It would have made a bigger impact then and I think less people would be upset about it. I think he’s still learning, but I like that he’s improving, so I approve.

After 2 years under Gailey I feel better about our O-line and I think he deserves half the credit for that. If Bell was healthy and signed, I would feel great about it. And oh yeah, Would (wood) too. (sigh)
Everything else about the Bills seems the same, lousy. Acquiring talent has a lot to do with developing it….. I am unsure where the line should be so I voted unsure.

No NFL coach or OC is perfect. Let’s face it, with the talent this offence had, we over achieved. Our WR corps is a bunch of nobodys, our QB is a journeyman and our OL was considered one of the biggest holes on the team.
By the end of the season, our OL performed well in run blocking, had one of the lowest sack totals in the NFL and kept ticking despite numerous injuries.
Our WR corp has no deep threat and our QB struggles to throw the deep ball but Chan game planned around the weaknesses of our team. What he was able to squeeze from our offense was simply genius.

Blah, blah, blah.
A 7 game losing streak where you’re outscored by a 32-14 average does not allow for anyone to be called a genius. Chan came out like gangbusters but once the league figured him out it was over. Yesterday was the Bills season in one tiny tight package. Chan can’t adapt or is too slow to react.

Kyle Williams, Shawne Merriman and Fred Jackson go down
Defensively, our two best pass rushers go down, our best CB (McGee) goes down and our defense opens up like a sieve. Not a surprise considering our lack of depth.
Offensively, we lost our best player in Freddy. Fitz played probably one to two good games (Jets & Titans) in that 7 game losing streak. It’s no surprise we struggled when you lose your best players offensively and defensively.

Easy Call - Disapprove.
- The offense is still horrific at clock management.
- Very slow to make adjustments when teams were sitting on this short passing game during the 7 game slump.
- More concerned with personal ‘packages’ than getting his best players on the field.
- Failed to improve the defense, in fact, it’s probably worse.
- No Plan ‘B’ if a career backup QB suddenly reverted to form.
- No effort or plan to develop a young QB.

Misguided anger...
Very slow to make adjustments when teams were sitting on this short passing game during the 7 game slum.
And if he tried to throw the long ball, folks would complain that our OL couldn’t hold their blocks, WR’s had no deep threat, and our QB can’t throw the deep ball. Fitz threw for 62% completion rate and almost 4000 yards… that’s pretty darn good, despite the opponents focusing on our short timing pass game.
More concerned with personal ‘packages’ than getting his best players on the field.
In what way? Referring to not having CJ on the goal line? He’s barely 200 lbs, he’s not a bruiser while Choice was more between the tackles type runner. Freddy was always in on the goal line so to say it wasn’t about the best players is ridiculous. Sometimes personnel packages are exactly how you counter certain defensive formations.
No Plan ‘B’ if a career backup QB suddenly reverted to form.
No effort or plan to develop a young QB.
Really need to plan Nix on this one. GM makes personnel decisions.
Failed to improve the defense, in fact, it’s probably worse.
2010 Bills Defense: 92.6 Opponent QB Rating, 169 Rushing Yards per game, 27 Sacks, 11 INTs, 2 TDs
2011 Bills Defense: 90.4 Opponent QB Rating, 139 Rushing Yards per game, 29 Sacks, 20 INTs, 4 TDs
Bills improved in almost every category – granted not much and it’s hard to get that much worse. They also experienced SIGNIFICANT injuries for several key players (McGee, Kyle Williams, Merriman, Chris White, Troup). However, we were better at defending the run, better defending the pass (slightly), more turnovers, more pick 6’s. There was no change in our pass rushing roster so we can’t complain about lack of pass rush – the Bills didn’t add any pass rushers in 2011. If the Bills add a talented pass rusher and put in an OLB that can seal the edge (Johnson can’t…) then we may see even more improvement next year.
I’m not saying I’m not terribly disappointed in the season but I’m also not saying we should throw out the baby with the bath water. We’re only 2 years in and competed when we were healthy. We beat several playoff caliber teams and a lack of depth hurt our team over the long haul. There is still a a lot of talent missing from the defense (specifically LB position) to play in the 3-4. Depth will be resolved and talent will be added.

6-10 and average of 5-11.
As Bill Parcells said, you are what your record says you are, and Chan coached a 6-10 team.
The offense is still horrific at clock management.
I 100% disagree with this.
The offense has shown COUNTLESS times this season the ability to suceed with little time on the clock.
Additionally I dont think there has been a half this season where the Bills have gotten to the last 5 minutes with less than two timeouts.
The clock management this season has been absolutely wonderful.

Great man, but....
Chan is a great man. Jimmy Carter is a great man. But both were terrible at key jobs.
When we hired him I was not happy, he was a middle of the road ACC coach who was fired by Georgia Tech. I am a NC State fan and we never feared him. He went 1-9 the past 10 games.
However, the real culprit is still Ralph Wilson. He hired a cheap GM, a cheap coach, and holds the purse strings on hirings. We are a 6-10/7-9 team and will stay that way for a while.
Remember, Dick Jauron averaged 7-9. Chan’s average? 5-11. How anyone can approve is beyond me.
10 wins
I disapprove, 10 wins in 2 years is not acceptable. I like a lot of what he is doing on offense but he is also responsible for the defense and the defense is atrocious.
100% Disapprove
Odd personnel decisions
Too reliant on the passing game

Voted Not Sure
Hard to believe I’m still not sure after 2 years, but I am. I see good things and bad. My real dissatisfaction in how the Bills are set up for the future lies with Buddy Nix. But back to Chan:
Positives:
Somehow has made an offensive line with minimal talent and maximum injuries into a decent group. Gotta respect that…even if it means limiting the offense a bit by not calling long-developing pass routes and such and encouraging Fitz to get the ball out quickly.
Has coached Fitzpatrick to maximize his talents and has him playing better than I could have ever expected him to play. Having said that, I am 100% confident that Fitz is not the long-term answer at the position, so if the Bills are unable to upgrade this offseason (by drafting a young QB to sit and learn behind Fitz until ready to play) AND if Chan is encouraging Buddy Nix that Fitz is the Franchise’s future at the position, then I will begin to blame Chan for not having the vision to realize Fitz is simply an adequate “placeholder” until the real future QB is found. But for now, I have no evidence of this, so I will wait to see.
At times his offense has been on a roll, looking very hard to stop.
I don’t have many issues with his in-game decisions.
I like his straight-forward press conferences and easy to understand answers. Seems to give honest answers when he can.
I think the players really like to play for him.
I like his decision to sit Stevie for the rest of the Pats game.
Negatives:
The biggest negative for me is still in the future…that is IF Chan really believes Fitzpatrick is the long-term answer for the Bills at QB. If he falls in love with what he has been able to coach Fitz into, all his other positives won’t matter, because the Bills will never be able to win the Super Bowl. That simple. On the other hand, if Chan realizes he’s done a fantastic job of getting Fitz to this point, but that Fitz’s limitations will not allow him to progress much further, and thus, a Franchise QB must be acquired soon, then I am all for him.
Obviously, the defensive performance has not been acceptable. Hopefully all the defensive draft picks of the last 2 drafts will begin to contribute more to helping the defense improve in the years to come.
Don’t like moving Moats’ position around, and in the end making him ineffective this year after showing some nice potential last year.
Not continuing to run the football in games in which it is working is often a head-scratcher.
The long losing streaks are troubling.
I don’t like the fact that he is basically the Head Coach and Offensive Co-ordinator. Not that I can pinpoint instances where it is negatively effecting the team….it’s more just a situation that I don’t believe is a great setup. Seems like too much responsibility on one person. And why wouldn’t you want another offensive-minded person to help gameplan and bounce ideas off each other? I would like to see a real OC brought in.
Was not happy to see Geoff Hangartner cut when it happened, and was even more unhappy about it when Wood was lost for the season. Really, unless there was pressure placed on Chan to cut Hang due to his salary by the financial people at One Bills Drive, I just don’t understand letting go a guy who could backup 3 different positions on the offensive line. And even if his salary was the reason, why not see if he will take a paycut to stay in Buffalo? What do you have to lose….he says no? You were going to cut him anyway! How it happened was also a little strange…a few days before the cuts were made, Hangartner was interviewed and said he had “guarantees” that he would be on the roster…so obviously, he either didn’t understand or was mislead. Either way, the Bills DEF could have used him this year.
Conclusion:
Many of the negatives and positives of Coach Gailey largely cancel each other out, and I am left with an unsure feeling about his performance so far. My general sentiment is that Gailey is doing all he can to get maximum performance from a group of late round draft picks, undrafted rookies, other team’s cut players, and “second/third level” free agents still available late in the process. I’m not sure that another coach could take the players currently on the roster and get them to the playoffs.
What really will solidify my outlook will be how Chan and the Bills deal with the QB position going forward. I really hope the contract they just gave to Fitz doesn’t preclude them from drafting the future at the position early in the draft asap. In my mind, little else matters if we have Fitz at QB (unless of course the defense turns into the 1985 Bears or 2000 Ravens type all time great defense)…I have not been waiting 12 years so I can see the Bills sneak into the playoffs for a few years and maybe win one game. Nope, I’ve waited this long, I want to see them do it right…draft a star QB, sit him for a year behind Fitz and then show me the baby.

I have approved all season, until now
I voted unsure.
I think he did a great job handling Stevie. He said if you get penalized for celebration, you will be benched. You have to stick to your word.
The only thing that alarms me is his blind faith in Fitz and recievers. The play calling has become pretty alarming by relying heavily on the pass, when we have a great backfield. When Fred was posting the league’s best rushing numbers, we still threw the ball on most 3&1 situations.
The spread should be a package, not your base offense. The plays have become so predictable, defenses could cheat and shut down the offense completely.
Our defense is terrible, but I think criticism of the offense is warranted. The few times we ran on 3&1, it was out of the shotgun, with 4 recievers, and no extra blockers and we got stuffed. 3rd down conversion rates dropped dramatically after the defenses cheated, because they knew what we were going to do before we did it. I know in a miami game we didn’t convert a single 3rd down. I believe there may have been another game like that as well. I know the team has been injured a lot, but come on, you have to convert at least ONE conversion!!!
Is this your homework, Larry?
Not sure
There was a lot that went right this season, and then a whole lot that went wrong. Unfortunately, I don’t know how much of it we can pin on Gailey. Sure, there are decisions he’s made that I disagree with, but at the same time every coach in history has made decisions I disagree with. I will probably continue to vote Not Sure of him until near the end of next season, where we find out for sure if both he and Nix have changed the team for the better, or have failed spectacularly.
"Slowly all the roles we act out become our identity. And in the end we are what we pretend to be." - Jerry Cantrell.
Voted not sure as well
For primarily the same reasons as you.
There was a lot that went right this season, and then a whole lot that went wrong.
During that 7 game losing streak, the most troubling thing for me was Chan saying he didn’t understand why the offense wasn’t producing because they were doing the same thing earlier in the season. I didn’t like hearing that. I also felt that Chan was losing the team during that stretch. As far as the benching is concerned, I feel he did the right and wrong thing again (which was the tone of the whole season). I agree with Joe P in that he should have benched him for a half. There was a gray area. The most important thing is winning the game, regardless if many view it as meaningless.
However, I will give Chan credit for extremely surprising me with the O-line, even with the injuries. Turning from a line that led the league in sacks allowed to one among the fewest.

I’m not a fan of the spread, yet look what N.E. is able to do with a complex passing attack. I think Chan is thinking championship, and a straightforward running attack is probably not going to get us there. We need a few more ace players to make the style click, though.
Fitz: I’ve been a big supporter, and am glad he got his full shot this season. With that said, he didn’t exactly put a stranglehold on the job.
Moving into year three of the BuChan era, lots of parts are in place and acclimated; now it’s time to perform. The Wannstedt move also should help. 11 years as a head coach; “a wealth of experience”, as Chan said. 8-8 or better next year with no losing streaks of more than two games is a realistic expectation.

On one hand, I approve of what he’s done. I approve of the way he handled the Stevie thing. I disapprove of his continued reluctance to use Spiller as though he’s a true NFL player.
How do I vote here? I guess given the fact they’re 6-10, i’ll diapprove of Gailey’s efforts this month.
