Which "2nd Tier" WR Free Agent will Bills go after who will be "Open, when they are not open"
I am not much for reading the litany of mock drafts, especially those that come out 2-3 months ahead of time and well before the BIGGEST opportunity the Bills have to add immediate talent to the team. Sure "through the draft" is the way Nix wants to build our team for long-term success... so I get the excitement factor of April. I am focusing on March though and the words that Nix said when he said the Bills need "one of those WR's who are open when they are not open". Chris Brown emphased this in his Friday fan Q/A Blog on BB.com.
It is a nice year to have that "need" considering UFA allows for many of the biggest names in WR's "available" this year in Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe, and Marques Colsten. These guys are all top WR#1 on their teams and will be "paid" to be #1 WR on a team too. Everyone is tying Vincent Jackson to Buffalo because of the Nix connections there... (personally I'd like to see Bowe because of the Gailey connections). However, I also know Nix does not like to make a splash in FA and has said they do not want to be the "front-runners" nor sign the top guy (unless they were our guy first). So this makes me wonder and want to hear from you on which "2nd Tier" WR's who are "open when they are not open" could be our starting WR next season on the outside...
Pierre Garcon 6'0" 215 lbs- Has increased his production every year in Indy... including last year with scrubs throwing the ball. 70 receptions 6 TDs and almost 1000 yards. Might fly under the radar for teams paying the big bucks.
Braylon Edwards 6'3" 215 lbs... I hope not but could see them "kick the tires on him" as he is only 28.
Plaxico Burress 6'5" 234 lbs... 45 receptions for 600 yards and 8 TDs is pretty good for being in jail and out of football. Listening to an interview from him about mid-year he admitted he wasn't the "main target" in NY and was only suppose to play 1/2 time (until Santonio Holmes blew a gasket) and Sanchez is also throwing to him. He's 34 though and would be probably be a 1 year deal until Easley can prove himself. Probably my vote for short term.
Early Doucet - 6'0" 212 lbs... injured much of his career was suppose to replace Anquain Bolden. Had 54 receptions for about 700 yards and 5 TDs. Only 26 and could be more consistent.
Josh Morgan - 6'0" 219 lbs... IR in 2011 with broken leg and ankle. Again only 26. Lots of talent but not proven
Legedu Nanee - 6'2" 220 lbs... Played as #2 WR in Carolina last year after San Diego let him go. This guy is more of a decoy than a WR. Does not have good hands for his size. I hope not here either.
Terrell Owens 6'2" 224 lbs... 38 years old. No, no, no.... enough said.
Chaz Schillens 6'4" 225 lbs. 26 years old. Not much of a chance in Oakland behind all the speedsters they had at WR. Never caught more than 30 balls or 2TDs in a season. Could be a sleeper given his size.
Devin Aromashodo 6'2" 200lbs. 27 years old and has bounced around 3 teams including MN who had him last year where he caught 24 balls for under 500 yards. Probably not "big enough".
Roy Williams - 6'3" 215 lbs 30 years old... no, no, no again.
Bryant Johnson 6'3" 215lbs 30 years old... Our very own Panda Bear. 6 receptions in 15 games for Houston even with Andrew Johnson missing all that time. No again.
Robert Meachem 6'2" 210lbs. 27 years old with no more than 45 catches in a season including last year where he had 600 yards and 6 TDs. Might be affordable for the Saints to resign because they will probably lose Colsten as they won't be able to afford him and Drew Brees.Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

I voted Schillens
He fits the Nix WR model.
Did the Saints already resign Robert Meachum? He’d be my first choice, unless you consider him not 2nd Tier.

He'd be my second choice behind Jackson.
But since we’re talking second tier guys I’ll go with Meachem.

I voted none of these scrubs.
Mainly because they’re all scrubs. None of them have earned the moniker of a true first or second target. I mean there is a case for Pierre Garçon, but I think he`s more a product of Payton Manning and having Reggie Wayne opposite to him than he is a true number 2 guy.
I also don`t see why we wouldn’t go after Jackson or Bowe. I think that we haven’t went after the top guys because none of them either a) fit our scheme, or b) really wanted to play here. But I’d also rank Barnett as the top tier UFA from last season (second best ILB out of lat year’s UFA in production this year), so to say that we don’t go after top guys? UI can’t agree with that.
So to sum it up: Give me Jackson. If not Jackson, then Meachem. If not Meachem, then Bowe. But we should go after all 3 and see which one wants to be with the Bills.

Barnett was more attainable because he was coming off injury...
I just don’t see us being an attractive destination for top tier UFA’s. The small market/cold weather aspects are things that can’t be changed, but they can be overcome. But right now, the Bills aren’t a contender and they don’t have a clear direction. We haven’t made the playoffs in 12 years, we have a 73 year old GM and we have a coach who’s going to be on the hot seat from week 1. None of those things scream stability, which has to be a major turnoff for a UFA with a bunch of offers.

I am sure the Bills will “go after Jackson or Bowe” but in my opinion I don’t think they will “buck up enough” to land them or they will choose other destinations for the same or less money. My point of the post is talk about 2nd-Tier “big” WR’s that might not be on anyone’s radar because we are all saying that we “will” sign Jackson, Bowe or Colston. I don’t think that is the case and maybe they’ll move towards a Schillen or Aramashodo?
If we’re not getting better than Meachem, I’d rather OBD save the money and get a better defender in FA and draft one of Jeffery/Floyd/Blackmon

Bowe has been, and could be a cancer
Bowe has all the talent in the world, but has had his issues. If he doesn’t feel like playing, he doesn’t. There was a ESPN special on his issues last year about how he has turned the corner and gotten his act together. Again this year his attitude got in the way. Not giving it his all, a perfect example was in the Steelers game where he alligator armed a pass. With his track record, he is not someone the Bills need near Stevie Johnson.
I am not saying he is a horrible person, but I just do not trust individuals who only care about themselves. When you are on the field, team first.
But won't the Saints have to break the bank to re-sign Drew?
How are they going to have enough money left to sign Marques Colsten and others the team needs to retain?

thats who i picked

Robert Meachem
Sorry forgot to add… 6’2" 210lbs. Never more than 45 catches in a season and finished last year with 600 yards and 6 TDs. 27 years old and it might come down to NO keeping him instead of Colston because they have to pay Drew Brees and might be able to keep the more affordable Meachem.
And he's also
a legit deep threat.

Bingo
Buffalo adds Meachem, and can cross WR off the needs list, if they resign Johnson.
A Meachem-Johnson-Nelson trio would be big and hard for defenses to contain. Add in Chandler as the underneath receiver, and Buffalo’s in business.

I’m not sure about Meachem. He’s never really established himself playing with Drew Brees and in a dome. And that’s while never being the top 3 options in the pass game. I’m not so sure he’d do that great here.

I wonder how many people
wanted Meachem, but voted for someone else, when he wasn’t on the original poll.

I say Braylon Edwards
We could sign him to an incentive ladden deal that would push him to put numbers up or he gets paid the minimum. Nix always wanted big wide receivers and anyone 6 foot or under as not always been his cup of tea. Edwards would be working to get a soilid next contract and if he puts up the numbers than the Bills will resign him for 2013 and beyond. Classic set up of living up to expectations.

I would also
let Johnson go into free agency and sign Bowe since he has already worked with Gailey. Bowe and Edwards with Nelson as a #3 would look pretty good.
Fat, Drunk, & Stupid is No way to go through life.
after the Jackson, Bowe and Colston
I would go Meachem if not him and can’t get real good in draft just give Easley all the reps and hope he can stay healthy.
Is Manningham going to be a FA? i thought i heard that somewhere

Yes, Manningham is a FA
but he is under 6’0" so I am not sure if he is a “open when you are not open” type of receiver. He’d be a nice addition though.
yes ive been banging the Manningham drum for a while
and Im not sure how hes not in this poll. Hes our guy.
This even grates my passive cheese - LeClaire Bill
I hope not
Small, and slight, is not what I want from a number 2 guy.
