2012 NFL Draft: Mike Mayock's Top Five By Position

Photo

The 2012 Senior Bowl has been taking place in Mobile, Alabama this week, and as such, 2012 NFL Draft talk has been ramping up in some circles. We're easing into it this year thanks in large part to the fact that free agency will precede the draft as usual once again - and there isn't a better way to be eased in than by Mike Mayock of the NFL Network.

Mayock released his top five prospects by position earlier today, and in typical Mayock fashion, he's got more than a few surprises thrown in. (Keep in mind that a "surprise," in this case, is how he ranks players as opposed to the Mel Kipers and armchair scouts of the world.)

After the jump, we'll take a look at Mayock's top five players at four positions that have been widely projected as potential Round 1 targets for the Buffalo Bills: wide receiver, offensive tackle, cornerback and pass rushers.

Star-divide

WIDE RECEIVER
1. Justin Blackmon, Oklahoma State
2. Michael Floyd, Notre Dame
3. Kendall Wright, Baylor
4. Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina
5. Chris Givens, Wake Forest

OFFENSIVE TACKLE
1. Riley Reiff, Iowa
2. Matt Kalil, USC
3. Jonathan Martin, Stanford
4. James Brown, Troy
5. Zebrie Sanders, Florida State

PASS RUSHER
1. Quinton Coples, North Carolina
2. Melvin Ingram, South Carolina
3. Whitney Mercilus, Illinois
4. Nick Perry, USC
5. (tie) Chandler Jones, Syracuse
5. (tie) Andre Branch, Clemson
* Courtney Upshaw ranked as top linebacker

CORNERBACK
1. Morris Claiborne, LSU
2. Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama
3. Alfonzo Dennard, Nebraska
4. Leonard Johnson, Iowa State
5. Dre Kirkpatrick, Alabama

We'll have much more on these prospects, as well as many more, in the coming months. For now, which of these prospects are among your early favorites?

This is the first time I’ve seen anyone other than Kalil ranked as the top OT. Also, first time I’ve seen Kirkpatrick ranked that low on the CB list.

I’m currently on the Mercilus train for Buffalo’s pick at #10.

LOL....no, his weakness was women

which much like many of us, led to his death :-)

Death of Hercules
The Immortalization of Hercules

Hercules was married to Deianeira. One day, long after Hercules’ marriage to Deianeira, the centaur Nessus offered to ferry them across a wide river that they had to cross. Nessus set off with Deianeira first, but tried to abduct her. When Hercules realized the centaur’s real intention, Hercules chased after him and shot him with an arrow which was poisoned with Hydra’s blood. Before he died, Nessus told Deianeira to take some of his blood and treasure it, since it was a very powerful medicine and: if she ever thought Hercules was being unfaithful, the centaur told her, the blood would restore his love. Deianeira kept the vial of blood.

Many years after that incident she heard rumours that Hercules had fallen in love with another woman. She smeared some of the blood on a robe and sent it to Hercules by a servant named Lichas. Lichas spilled some blood on the floor and when the sun’s rays fell on it the blood begun to burn. Because of this Deianeira began to suspect Nessus’s advice and decided to send another servant to fetch Lichas back before he could hand over the blood soaked robe to Hercules. She was too late. Hercules had already put on the robe and when he did so the blood still poisoned from the same arrow used by Hercules, burnt into his flesh. When he jumped into a nearby river in hope of extinguishing the fire, it only made it worse. When he tried to rip off the robe from his body his organs were also ripped off with it.

Furiously, Hercules caught Lichas and tossed him into the sea. After that he told his friend Philoctetes to build him a pyre on the mountain Oata. He was burnt to death on the pyre. Before dying, Hercules offered his bow and arrows as a token of gratitude to Philoctetes. His father Zeus then turned him into a god. Deianeira, after hearing what she had caused, committed suicide.

My Top 3 for the Bills @ 10

1. Upshaw
2. Nick Perry
3. Dre Kirkpatrick.

That is all.

Kirkpatrick

I wasn’t impressed with Dre this season. I think that he benefited from playing on a defense that put constant pressure on a quarterback and was flat out dominant. He deserves credit for being a part of that, but I think he was more of a benefactor than a contributor.

Didn’t he also just get busted for possession? Maybe he will be there in the 2nd round!

yes, he got busted

He was arrested for possession of pot. Up until that point, I thought it might be between him and Claiborne, depending on which one was still available at #10. The arrest will almost certainly scare the Bills away, and Kirkpatrick might even drop out of the first round as a result.

by fanick82 on Jan 24, 2012 1:12 PM EST reply actions

I think its a combination of less sacks this year compared to last year and he doesn’t have the athletic prowess of some of the other pass rushers. He’s also more strictly a de prospect as far as I have heard.

by bizarro bills on Jan 24, 2012 1:17 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Coples dominates when he wants to thats the problem. He really turned it on at the senior bowl and has been unblockable. Coples is a boom or bust prospect. He is either gonna be albert haynesworth or julius peppers. Thats the problem and its a risk I do not want buffalo taking.

i picked whitney mercilus in my post yesterday, but

a different angle became visible to me….

dont’a hightower… i think he is perfect for us…reasons

1. we dont have anyone other than barnett and sheppard to start in 4-3… we might if we re-sign morrison.
2. first time in years our linebackers would be awesome barnett, hightower, sheppard.
3. in 3-4 looks he can move to OLB. Many here have indicated he has rushing ability. so he is truly MLB/ILB/3-4 OLB/4-3 OLB, everything
4. he obviously has the size advantage over a guy like upshaw. many here suggested he might even be better than upshaw in rushing skill
5. about the size, he is 6’4 260 lbs. fits nix’s mold. by the way, same size as urlacher.
6. he was as highly touted as his teammate rolando mcclain. only reason he dropped was a season ending knee injury.
7. his stock can rise back to mcclain’s level if he runs a 40 in 4.6s. that would do away the assumption that the knee injury has slowed him down.
8. i think he is much further along and has higher potential than mcclain.
9. despite barnett’s awesome season, he is injury prone. he gets injured every other year based on recent history. with hightower, our future can be hightower, sheppard, barnett or morrison.

Nix will not trade up for two reasons

One. He lets the draft come to him
Two. There are so many holes to fill that wasting picks to get one player isnt a good thing to do

With the first pick in the 2012 draft the Indianapolis Colts select Robert Griffen III

by Gpluehri on Jan 24, 2012 2:40 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

this

Luck and Griffin will be long gone by the time the Bills pick, and it seems very unlikely that Nix would trade up to get either one. Tannehill has very limited college experience at QB, and he will miss the Senior Bowl and combine because of foot surgery, so he seems like far too much of a risk for Nix to take him. No other QB this year is worth taking that high.

It may just end up being a OT. Really safe non sexy pick that wont be a big reach. This draft seems pretty deep in LB’s for pass rush and addressing WR in a deep free agency pool also seems pretty plausible.

actually i lied

coaches in gailey’s situation tended to draft qbs at a 15% rate. But virtually all of them were drafted deep, DEEP in the draft (round 7 or, in the 80s, later!).

since 1980, only two coaches with similar winning% to Gailey in a hot seat year drafted QBs in the 1st round. can you guess what coaches/what QBs?

by lord gloom on Jan 24, 2012 11:28 PM EST up reply actions

I'm guessing they will take a pass rusher

CB – Good chance Claiborne goes in the top nine. Kirkpatrick screwed up big time by getting caught with pot. Dennard and Jenkins are shorter guys (5’10"), so I don’t know if they will make as big an impression on Nix.

LT – Yes, there are several good options, but it seems like a marginal upgrade over Bell and Hairston. The likelihood of picking a tackle will certainly go up if Bell is not re-signed.

DE/OLB – This may depend a lot on the Senior Bowl and combine, but I think the bills will find somebody they like enough to take at #10. The lack of a pass rush was obvious, and we need better/durable OLBs if we want to stick with a 3-4. Kelsey is a 4-3 DE, and Merriman seems unlikely to survive an entire season as an every-down player. The scheme they choose for next year may determine if they pick Coples (4-3) or Upshaw (3-4).

WR – Blackmon will almost certainly be gone by the time the Bills pick. Jeffery and Floyd have the kind of size that Nix is looking for. Picking a WR depends somewhat on whether or not they think Marcus Easley will ever play, and if he does, will he be a beast or a bust?

by SiriusRed on Jan 24, 2012 1:58 PM EST via mobile reply actions

Free agency is also looking really interesting this year. We could fill several holes need wise giving us a much clearer draft picture sooner then later. I don’t expect high profile but I do expect activity.

by eriesimmer on Jan 24, 2012 2:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I disagree about the OT's

When Bell has been healthy he has been an acceptable LT. These guys are all studs at there position and well theres no guarantee they’re going to be all pros they certainly have more upside than Bell did coming out of college. I think if Kalil or Reiff is there we should take them no questions asked. Build from the inside out both on offense and defense. That means in the last two first rounds we would hopefully havent gotten the anchors of our offensive and defensive lines.

Easley is the perfect type of guy to have as a backup plan. Lots of physical ability, but hasn’t put it together yet. I don’t think he can a third great WR on the team. Or even trade bait at some point later. Either way, we should be stacking talent on talent, just like Nix has said.

The writers did a write up on the top 13 prospects that they thought the Bills would take. I don’t find it too far fetched to review most of the players on this list. They must think one of the 20 guys on this list will be the Bills pick if they are the only ones listed in this article.

I hear you. I was just cracking wise at how early we start calling for in depth write ups on these potential picks. There are still 93 days until the draft with events such as the senior bowl, combine, and pro days off in the horizon as well. I’m sure there will be in depth analysis on these guys, but do we really need it before all these other events take place?

why not? the seasons over. the tapes all out there. combine and predraft stuff may shift these players around a bit (on the mayock/talking head side, not so much the actual NFL scouting side), but either way the top two or three rounds worth of guys could be reasonably predicted right now, so why not get familiar with them?
plus theres really nothing else to talk about relative to bills football besides draft prospects..

You do realize that those reports take a ton of time to do accurately?

And the way we did them last year, we did five reports on all thirteen players. I don’t know about Brian and Matt, but spent a lot of late nights rewatching video of each player to make sure I saw what I thought I saw the first time through.

That all said, I’m sure we’ll put together something.

all the more reason to start early :) which is kind of what i was trying to say… at pick 3 we (this site) ended up with 13 possibilities. 13 for pick 3. how many will we end up with for pick 10?
unless you want someone like me flooding the fan post section with them, the point i was making up there was that theres really not much else going on, anyway

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

Brian and Matt will come up with some schema for this year

Last year’s format may be undoable. We did five reports on every players. If we gave the 10th pick a fair shake, we’d have to do 25-ish players, and would have to put together around 75 reports.

agreed

At #3 and also with no other off-season reporting going on because of lockout you can do deeper analysis on likely picks. At #10 far too many permutations to try and report.

no reason to......all you have to do is the top 15 players on Kiper's Big Board

the Bills are a lock to pick one of them.

Mayock/ guess

I trust Mayock as a voice worth listening to amongst hundreds not worth it during my most hated “event” on the sports calendar- the modern NFL Draft. Obviously, the 10th pick (and this draft as a whole) is one of Chix’s big bullets and they absolutely can’t miss on it, so I’m very interested, but the bluster surrounding this event remains absurd to me. Reading the tea leaves collected from Buffalo’s PR machine since their season collapsed dramatically, my suspicion says WR at 10. I’ll guess Floyd using Mayock’s rankings.

I could also see Foles sky-rocket. He had an absolutely brutal supporting cast, but Foles is a very good QB with good feet, arm, mind, and presence. If he was on a collegiate power house like USC, OSU, Florida etc. He’d be undoubtedly a top 10 pick.

I have seen nick foles use his arm to power through alot of bad releases or what ever he.does. Alot of times he throws a really sloppy spiral a wobbler and.uses his arm power to get the ball there. I am talking about a tight spiral something he has problems doing.

I've been on the Foles wagon since last season

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/college_player_scouting_report.html&player=35005

Pros:
A tall, strong-armed quarterback prospect who spins a clean football and with ease can make all the throws.

Does a decent job-manipulating defenses, looking off receivers to one side and coming back to his primary target.

Has experience both from the gun and under center, balances his feet quickly into throws, transfers his weight well and can accurately fit the football into tight areas on all levels of the field.

Cons:
However, accuracy and mechanics both become inconsistent when he feels pressure

But is slow to decipher information at times.

Is a bit inconsistent on his bucket throws down the field. Has a tendency to under throw vertically when he needs to put more touch on the pass

Impression:
A big, strong-armed passer who has the tools physically. Made some real strides as a quarterback as a senior without much talent around him. Is going to take some time, but is an potential starting caliber pocket passer.

I agree with everything Bunting says, also no mention of throwing ducks, on a consistent basis, which I didn’t see when I watched him play either.

i dont know that a tight spiral is absolutely necessary

peyton manning is known for throwing some rather comical balls… and having them land in exactly the right place, for 15 years.

by lord gloom on Jan 24, 2012 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

I haven’t seen Foles play, but his throws couldn’t be anywhere near the level of Tim Tebow badness. Tebow can’t throw a spiral at all. By all reports, Foles is a good pocket passer, and I would love to see the Bills grab him if he’s still available in the second round. Due to the lack of top-level QB prospects this year, he might go late in the first round.

by SiriusRed on Jan 25, 2012 8:42 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Not true. He throws a great ball in general. Accurate and has a monster arm. His only true weakness is his mobility, but I’d prefer a good arm on my QB than good legs anyday

Quinton Coples

Why does everyone think he’s going to flame out? Sure he may have an attitude problem here or there or maybe some people say he “takes plays off” just because he didn’t put up enormous sack numbers this year, but I’ve watched some tape from some of his games (good and bad) on draftbreakdown.com. Although he doesn’t have those numbers you look for, he disrupts a TON more plays then people give him credit for and he was a hair away from a few sacks in just the videos ive seen. He’s also damn good against the run. I saw it in those videos and i watched NFL newtork’s senior bowl practice coverage today and he was blowing running plays up every time he was in. Maybe under George Edwards he would be a bust but I think Wannstedt can light a fire under his ass. I go to Pitt and I watched Dave turn a 2 star Greg Romeus into a sack machine and potential 1st rounder till he got hurt. Jabal Sheard too was a no name recruit and he’s doing damn well as a pass rusher. None of those guys have the physical gifts that Coples have, and you put him on a line with K.Will and Marcell and I think you got a damn good pash rusher in a year or 2.

The only thing that will stop him from being a pro bowler is himself and I don;t think his will to wreck his own career is strong enough to stop him from at least living up to 2/3 his potential. Guys Jason Pierre Paul on Roids. We take him at 10, I throw a finger up to God.

Yall have your opinions and that’s mine. Of course, wouldn’t complain about Upshaw either.

Would love to get Floyd with the 10th pick, though someone OBD should look at in the 2nd or 3rd round is Brian Quick from Appalachian State.

I think he was 6’3 1/2 220 lbs. and ran a 4.5 He also had some ridiculously long arms.

not too many surprises here

I think Claiborne is low but most likely due to his recent arrest and Nick Perry is lower than I’d have thought. Reiff is the real surprise ahead of Kalil but as many posters have said so far a lot can change between now and April.

Can’t wait till april, My favorite part of the season made even better by Buddy Nix drafting good players.

Mercilus, coples,Jeffery, Any of the three top OT’s, or Trent Richardson would all make me happy at 10(yeah I said it). Floyd is possibly an alchoholic, and I just don’t see what others see. Ingram and Upshaw could be awesome players, but both are 6’1 at a position that usually calls for a taller player.

No matter how it goes I’m looking forward to it, and the draft is deep with pass rushers so if we don’t get one in the first, we can get one in the second. 1 pass rusher can get the bills where they need to be, Nix just needs to find him.

We have an elite pass rushing LB who likes to conserve electrcity-Munchausen

by cencalclassics on Jan 25, 2012 2:31 AM EST reply actions

Sticking with Upshaw

Upshaw might be a tad shorter than the prototype OLB but he is just a dam good football player.

Just like last year when the Bills drafted Dareus they needed a building block for the D-Line, they need a building block for the LB unit. Not that Dareus & Upshaw don’t make the fancy highlite plays but they are solid players that bring it each and every game.

Plus, the Bama program is a team first program the defensive players are taught to play as a unit and stay in the scheme. You won’t see much free lancing going on with the Bama players to pad their stats.

Mayock doesn’t have Upshaw listed in the top 5 pass rushers but he does have him listed as the top overall LB and that is just what the Bills need!

I’m with the group that wouldn’t be shocked or disappointed if the Bills tab RB Richardson even though we have Spiller and Freddy. Richardson is the next Adrian Peterson…

Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority.
