Around SBN: On Hazards And Hulks And Tigers, Oh My!

What do you guys wanna see?

This is my first post so I'm still figuring out what works and what doesn't for readers...

4-3 or 3-4. I know this has been covered in previous posts, but it's something that continues to be in the back of my head as I've been doing draft research and looking at everyones Mock drafts. Every time I look at a mock I try to figure out what this person envisioned defensively. It has basically gotten to a point where I would like some clarity. Even though I think it is an advantage that Buffalo can rotate fronts, I still think it is important to have a resemblance of an identity on defense. We have personnel up front that is versatile, partially because we've played both defenses in the past few years, but in my opinion I think our best bet is to go to a 4-3.

Here are a few reasons...

Star-divide

1. Dave Wannstedt is clearly more comfortable running a 4-3 defense. I think it is to the teams advantage to play to our coach's strengths first a foremost. Especially in our scenario where we are not a team that has only played one D for years (ie the Steelers). Wade Phillips was at his best as a 3-4 coach and transition the Texans to resemble that because that is what he was at his best doing. Clearly we didn't have a lot of success running 3-4 so I feel no commitment towards it.

2. Our two best defensive players are better built and I think will excell more in a 4-3 scheme. The thought of having Williams and Dareus in the middle makes me excited. Those two players are tremendous athletes and I think would make the entire defense around them better. I personally think having those guys in the 3-4 puts them out of position and doesn't take advantage of their skill set. Playing the 3-4 nose is not a position I think we should have our top 5 pick playing. Kris Jenkins has said multiple time that that position is the worst one in football, and his shortened career is a perfect example of what can happen. Not only that but putting WIlliams or Dareus at an end puts them too far out of plays at times. Clearly Troup is not going to be a top-tier NT like we had hoped. He already has injuries w/o playing full time and he has not shown the strength that is require to be one of the better ones at this position.

3. With Williams and Dareus you have two players who can penetrate and hold themselves at the point of attack. The other DL seem to have been forced to play out of position more than playing in a natural spot in the 3-4. Spencer Johnson and Carrington come to mind.

4. This draft seems to have a stronger core of guys who can play 4-3 and would arguably be better served at that position. Coples, Mercilus, Ingram, and maybe Branch are all guys we could take in the 1st round or two and are clearly big enough and more comfortable keeping their hand in the ground.

5. I really can't think of any player, in the Bills front 7 that either can't play in the 4-3 and if they can't they are expendable. Kelsey can. Carrington can be a DT/DE. Johnson DT. There has been talk of Edwards being cut for cap reasons and because I don't think he is really that good. He is an average player in my eyes and not somebody hold us back from switching by any means. LBs can be slotted because we don't really have one guy who is undersized or somebody who can't move. In my eyes I would love to add a MLB or SLB. Putting Sheppard at WLB and Barnett at SLB. Both those guys could play middle as well. All that leaves is a DE which is something that can be addressed in the draft and free agency.

Basically my thought process is to play to your teams strengths, starting at the top. Wannstedt is a 4-3 guy. Williams and Dareus are at their best as 4-3 DTs. That right there should be all the Bills need.

Those two players are going to help the pass rush by pushing the pocket and drawing interior attention. That will create a trickle down effect. All of a sudden the pass rush becomes better, the LBs don't have as many blockers around them, and the secondary has to cover for a shorter time. Once we start to get some certainty on scheme I think it will help us fans mock better (most important obviously) and help the organization plan better for the draft.

I want to see a good mix of both

As we will continue to do, I am pretty sure.

First of all

great first fanpost. Secondly, I agree with Gpluehri, I’d like the Bills to be able to throw both 3 and 4 man front’s at the opponents, as circumstances dictate.

I love the idea of Darius and Williams playing next to each other in the middle of that D-Line.. and i agree with eveveryone seeming out of position in the 3-4

If we go back to a 4-3, Nix and Gailey shouldn't keep their jobs...

I don’t see how they’d get to spend 2 years attempting to transition to a 3-4, fail miserably and then go back like it never happened. The player’s they’ve acquired to fill specific 3-4 holes – Troup, Carrington, Edwards, Merriman, etc. – have either been mediocre or busts which I guess is one reason the transition has been such a disaster.

In last year’s draft there was a shift and the focus seemed to be on scheme versatile players. I don’t know if that’s because a conscious decision was made that hybrid defenses were the way of the future or because they weren’t sure what system they wanted to run. Either way, I expect more of the same this year, which is fine. I’ll take good, well-rounded players over niche guys.

I understand that Wannstedt’s experience is with the 4-3, but to me a good coach designs his system around the player’s on his roster. Draft the best players available and develop a game plan that works for them.

I also don’t agree that we’re better suited to run a 4-3. Yes, we’d have an impressive interior DL with Williams and Dareus, but we’d still need 2 4-3 DE’s and an 4-3 SLB. You’re not suited to run any system where you need starters at 3 of your front 7. I’m not saying we’re in great shape for the 3-4 either. We’re not.

Ultimately I think 3-4 pass-rushing linebackers are easier to find in the draft than 4-3 pass-rushing DE’s. Given that the pass rush is the greatest weakness, I’d stick with the 3-4.

I don’t think Chix should lose their jobs because of the “fail” to a 3-4. The Bills were almost a 50/50 split on both schemes last year. Everybody knew the transition to a 3-4 would be an uphill battle and I give the Bills a small amount of credit for realizing where there flaws are and trying to help out there team by playing a scheme that would help them out.

Some of your posts really emphasize why going to a 4-3 would work. Versatile players!

I disagree that we need two DE’s. Say what you want about Kelsey, but he can be stout in run support and I’m fine with that from one DE. He is going to look a lot better with Williams and Dareus in the middle too.

LBs are not that hard to find IMO. We found guys like Morrison and Davis to “fill-in” at LB in the 3-4 and I’m sure they could have been ok if injuries hit us. There are guys out there who can be one of our 4-3 LBs.

I voted 3-4

Only because we have spent 2 years drafting guys for that system. I don’t see it as that big a deal. Teams rarely play one or the other. Everyone seems to forget that the base defense is only in when a team plays 2 WR, 2 RB, 1 TE. If the offense shows up in any other format, they most likely switch to Nickel or Dime coverage, which typically has 4 DL.
Your post is interesting, but, I think too much time has been spent on this. Today, almost everyone on defense is a specialist. When the offense changes personnel, so does the defense. How often is the defense in “base” personnel?
This team is closer to being a complete defense in the 3-4. Yes, the DL is better in the 4-3, but, they will be that way in Nickel and Dime packages anyways. As Brian said in a recent article, they need to draft every down starters. Right now, they need at least 2 starters on the 3-4, and would need at least 3 starters on the 4-3. So, go with the one that they, in theory, need the least amount of starters this year.

Has anyone from OBD

mentioned anything about changing the D. Why wouldn’t they stick with the present setup?

by Winnie33 on Jan 25, 2012 11:06 AM EST reply actions

because they have a new defensive coordinator who has used a different setup than the present one for something like 3 decades.

Its fun to think quarterback, but i think the odds of nix taking one in the first are close to 0%.

This is where

those 5 year rebuild guys come from out of the wood work. They’ll say something like it’s only year 3 of the rebuild and you have to burn the city down before you can build a new one. Basically they believe we have to hit rock bottom and clean house and then hopefully through great drafting and trades/signings improve the defense and completely change the scheme.

On the other hand everybody already knows this defense is not working and in today’s “what have you done for me lately” world nobody is willing/wanting to wait 5 years to see a defense change and hopefully improve. We obviously still have better personnel for a 4-3 after years of running a 4-3. The 3-4 was a nice idea but when your team has not made the playoffs for over a decade nobody wants to wait the 5 years or so for you to finally finish the transition and get the correct personnel in here.

I voted 4-3 but would like to see a mix of both much like the Texans or Cardinals run.

totally agree with the last line.

Scheme doesn’t matter much, draft some good pass rushers and the defense will be good. We need to get 2 good pass rushers this year, if we don’t we will have another year of putrid defense.

You are now Watching The Throne.

4-3 all the way

Back when we had a 3-4 that was good, only 5 teams in the league ran a 3-4, now almost half the league does, so it is easier to find 4-3 talent than it was 10-15 years ago, OLB 3-4 pass rushers are getting extremely hard to come by with so many teams running a 3-4. That is my main reason why we should go 4-3.
