Mario Williams to the Bills
James Walker thinks the Bills should go after Mario Williams, as do I. There has been a lot of discussion about him on this blog, and everyone seems to want him, but obviously it seems like a long shot for the Bills to pay the money and for him to want to come here. But interesting to see other people are thinking about it.

For a second I thought that I was about to eat my shoe.
Then I remembered that this can’t happen until march. But you had me scared for a second there.

Don't be scared!
Embrace eatng your shoe! If that’s what it took for the Bills to get awesome FA’s and back to the playoffs, I’m sure a lot of people would be eating shoes!
Is this your homework, Larry?

Mario Williams would be an awesome FA addition, but I doubt he’d make them a playoff team.

Please....
No way the Bills will outbid 30 other teams for Mario Williams (excluding Bengals). I am a NC State fan, I always thought he was the next Bruce Smith, but this won’t happen.
The Houston Texans have already said that re-signing Mario Williams is very high on their priority list. I have been paying quite a bit of attention to them as of late and think they will be competitive for years to come. I think the chances of Mario leaving Houston for a place like Buffalo, is sadly, VERY low.
I am sure they want to re sign Williams
but I don’t think they have the cap space to do it.
You are now Watching The Throne.
Exactly
Houston may want to do it, but likely can’t without guts a significant portion of the team’s depth, and probably some weapons.
I think it’s highly likely that Houston uses a franchise tag on Williams, and then trades him.
Buffalo has an advantage: they have a significant amount of cap room. My rough (and I mean rough) estimation is $25 million (if the cap doesn’t go up), and that’s if everyone under contract returns.
It’s cost about $10 million for the rookies, giving Buffalo $15 million of cap room. Add in a likely cap shift, and Buffalo can fit Williams.
That’s all before making decisions on bringing back McGee, Florence, Merriman, etc.
Unfortunately, I don’t believe that Buffalo can afford Stevie Johnson and Mario Williams. I’ll accept that tradeoff though.
Re-starting the official Buffalo "Draft a quarterback in the First Round in 2012" campaign.
i believe
They will make one significant fa acquisition and think it will be wr. They are under pressure to help Fitz succeed.
I would do whatever I could to get Williams though. A big time defensive player/pass rusher has a greater impact than a wr. That is, if we keep stevie.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I don’t expect them to go hard after Williams or any WR. After all they have said time and time again that wouldn’t be their strategy

did nix not say
That they would spend the cap? And would infact bring in a wr? If you don’t believe that, then there is no reason to believe that they will not build through fa.
I don’t believe nix is stupid enough to think that he and Chan will be there long enough without making some kind of significant addition to see the team succeed only through the draft.

two words:
smoke screens.
we are definitely in the market for Williams. As most point out, it comes down to him believing he is joining a team on the rise. The Texans would have to ditch too many others to keep him, and even to franchise tag him, as DJ mentions.
I don’t agree we can’t afford both Steve, and a large contract to Super Mario, because plenty of teams afford both a pass rusher and a WR, even when they are above average.
I think it is clear that we are also in the market for some weapons, and though I don’t necessarily see that in FA (unless Steve goes unsigned), I do expect it in the draft.

i think any team should be in the market for Williams but do you honestly think that Buddy will go all out and give up draft picks for Williams + a huge salary?
I would like to think he would, he should but I have no confidence in him actually going out and doing that.

It depends on the level of WR. If we’re talking Larry Fitzgerald or Megatron, then no defensive player trumps them.

If they cut McGee
thats 6 million more if I am correct, cut Dwan Edwards or Dray Flo, and I think we can sign both Mario and Stevie. It seems amazing to me that this team, with not many great players doesn’t have the cap room to sign 1 great player and a good one. How do the eagles have all of those great players?
and we still need to re sign Levitre, Wood, Byrd, Fred, all very soon.
You are now Watching The Throne.
The Eagles make more money that the owner is willing to spend. Ralph likely wants to spend, tries to spend, but doesn’t have the same stash as a big-market team.

Why not
We if we get rid of some players Kelsay, Mcgee, and Merriman we would hae the cap space to get Mario Williams, Dwayne Bowe, and resign Stevie Johnson.
Mario wants a going rate of about 10 million a year. Bowe would cost about 7 a year and Stevie about 7 million a year. If the structures of these contracts are done right be could get all three. This is all on the basis that the Bills front office has the balls to do it.
Mario Williams – 8 years 80 Million, 35 guaranteed
Dwayne Bowe – 6 years, 42 Million 20 guaranteed
Stevie Johnson – 7 years 49 Million, 22 guaranteed
It can happen and depending on how the signing bonuses we would be able to sign all our other outstanding free agents to tender contracts.
Fat, Drunk, & Stupid is No way to go through life.
I think that it will take more than 80M to get Williams
I’m thinking that he signs something along the lines of 8 years, $100 Million, 45-50 guaranteed.
