Miracle on OBD! Possibly!?

I share the the amazingly emotional roller coaster ride of the 2011 Buffalo Bills regular season. I also will admit there have been many of times where I have been beyond wits end becasue of the loses. Whether the loses were because of poor coaching, multiple injuries, lack of a strong run defense, or what the press and other non Buffalo Bills fans like to piggy back on, is our Quarterback Fitzmagic's premature contract extension. In the end who knows, or it just may be a combination of all of the above. Let us all not forget the amazing Injury Spell that has been casted upon our team for the past decade or so.

To all of this, I beleive there may just be a MIRACLE coming to One Bills Drive for this up coming 2012 football season. It is nothing official, just my personal optomism for the love of the Buffalo Bills on this late overnight shift. There have been and will continue to be Mock Draft blogs and posts until the official draft day in April. Well browsing ESPN i notice there list of draft prospects. IMO the main one that can be a sure thing is OLB Courtney Upshaw. However noticeably which I am shocked, DE/DL Whitney Mercilus was not on the list. Not to say between now and April he wont, but he isn't as of today.

How much of a Miracle you say if we were able to get BOTH OLB Upshaw and DE/DL Mercilus for the 2012 season!? Brothers and Sisters let me know what are your thoughts. Or if there is a BETTER Draft/FA Dou you would like to have for the next season, bring it on!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Says Mercilus had one productive year. Had 1 sack in 2008 and 2009. He scares me because of the last one year wonder we drafted. (Maybin)

He did play well

against Mike Adams. 1.5 sacks, and he played well against Wisconsin as well, and a lot of that line will be drafted high, relatively soon.

I’m not on the Mercilus bandwagon, but for all the crap the Big 10 gets as a conference they routinely put out good O-line prospects.

Aldon Smith also only had one big year

I hope you wouldn’t have passed on him, too, for that reason alone.

PS. Aaron Maybin led the Jets in sacks and forced fumbles, and is only 20 months older than Upshaw.

Not taking anything away from Maybin .. but he is being coached by Ryan who is IMO a Defensive Jedi Knight! So he knows how to utilize what he has on the team .. he is by no means perfect .. but good at what he does ..

maybin cannot keep weight on and he was only being blocked by RBs here he was expected to be a pass rushing DE OLB not a Safety that could not cover, and upshaw is more than a light weight speed rusher, but OBD should sign mathis or avril and draft colpes and minnifield in the first 2 rounds, and George Iloka in the 5 or 6 to cover guys like gronk

@ for life

I definitely like Avril.. He had a breal out season with 11 sacks .. and he is still young .. Not the weight I was hoping for .. But I can definitely settle for 260 pounds of Dominance .. Coples is 21 and definitely has the 280 pounds I was looking for .. but dont believe he would be as good as Dareus .. great prospect for rotation ..

I can dig that ..

on the same note .. is he over all consistant with his game play? is he the type of guy that in any situation would sihne because of the personnel around him? if so why not go for it .. remember .. IMO rotation is key .. look how Awesome Dareus looked when the majority of the double teams were being placed on Kyle! .. he was pretty much dominant every play (as dominant a rookie placed in his pposition can be!) ..

Can't compare Maybin to Mercilus

You can’t compare those two because Mercilus is about 40 pounds heavier than Maybin will ever hope to be. Plus you can’t stay away from one year wonders, look at Pierre Paul, he was a one year wonder coming out of USF and now he’s one of the best defensive players in the league. Also, Maybin leading the Jets in sacks means nothing. They have crazy blitz schemes and great cover corners so any player in Maybins spot on the Jets can get sacks, people just think he sucks so they put a RB or a TE to block him.

Maybin v. Mercilus

Forget about the one-year wonder factor.

Just look at their tape. They seem like very similar players to me. Both have an excellent first step and great acceleration to the QB. Their array of pass rush moves consists mainly of a speed rush. Almost no counter move. No strength at the point of attack.

Mercilus is heavier and so at least can hold his ground somewhat in the run game. But neither player ever commands more than a tight end or a solid chip block to give the QB enough time to make the throw.

These guys are good at one thing – rushing the QB using their speed and acceleration. There is nothing wrong with that. But we can’t use a first round pick on a player like that.

Mercilus has a nice bullrush, something Maybin has never been able to develop.

@ renegade

oh no not at all would i ever say utilize a first round pick on Mercilus .. my intention on playing devils advocate was the Dou factor .. having him and Upshaw together .. I can see upshaw as a first rounder but by no means do I see Merc on that same level .. but I wouldnt mind .. so in all actuality I would like to see both of these guys on the team .. just to see how the rotation would fit with him in there …

i think a dou would be avril and coples with williams and dareus in the middle i think that would put some fear in tom brady, draft minnifield in the 2nd and add someone to be able to cover gronk-type TEs
